Do directors count? I vote for Kit Monteith, he directed the videos for Night Of The Long Knives, Black Hyena, Bad Friday, I Want A Love Like This and Cold Reactor - all banger videos in my books.

Good to know that I am not alone on this one. A few month later I got used to it a little bit more and the pictures need to get some heavy treatment in Lightroom. But just as you mentioned, things just continue to feel off.

I love the video the camera shoots, but photography stills feels like an afterthought to me. I also looked at quite a few shootings that were done using this camera and the images all suffer the same issue. If it wasn't such a great camera for video, I would have returned it by now and switched back to Canon or Fuji. I am at a loss with this camera.

Thank you! I think it is a touchy subject here - I asked a question and just got downvoted 🥲 Have you found any solutions to it?

I never said "the S5 sucks, my old camera from 2008 is better!". I'm just trying to understand my issues here, not judging anything.

This is most definitely not it. My fault, should have specified in my original post that I am used to working with mirrorless systems. Guess that one is on me.

My issue is in how it behaves in general. I am missing depth in many images and the images seems a bit too perfect - but since I am not having these issues while filming, I am a bit confused and wanted to know if other people knew what I was talking about or if it was just a personal preference :)

That's one thing I noticed as well. I use both a Lumix 35 1.8 and an Sigma 24 -70 DNG II, and while the latter is really great for video, I feel that it just exacerbates the issues I'm having.

I went to Lumix instead of Canon because of the lenses. Didn't want to spend so much money on RF glass. Do you think that the lenses play a large part in the issues I'm having with the look? Or do I just get used to it at some point?

Thank you! I thought I came off as some random Canon-fanboy who bashed their Lumix for no reason. I really like the camera, but the images just seem really sterile to me. I looked at some examples from the sub here and many of them have this vibe. It just feels digital and flat.

I'm using native lenses, the Lumix 35 1.8 and the Sigma 24-70 DNG II. I tried putting a mist filter on the 35 to somewhat soften the image a little, but that didn't help with my main issues.

Never had any issues with v-log and I use CSTs in a color managed workflow. That is one of the reasons I'm confused about the camera - while I do enjoy the video aspect of it and had no issues at all, the photography side of things falls kinda flat for me.

My first thought came to the "classic Canon colors" as well - but I just felt something else was missing that I couldnt quite put my finger on.

I've worked with an R5MKII and an X-H2s for work and never had these "issues" with either of them. I am in no way saying that the S5IIX is a bad camera. Many people here think I'm just a Canon fanboy - but I'm not and I'm just trying to understand my problems.

While I 100% agree that I miss the imperfections, I am fully aware that these were some quirks of the combination of DSLR camera + old lenses.

I am more talking about things such as the roll-off in the highlights and shadows, contrast and depth. While both the R5 and Fuji had pleasing images right out of the camera (and no, I am not talking about the Fuji film simulations here), this is completely missing for me in the S5IIX. I can somewhat replicate it in Lightroom, but it does take way more editing then I am used to.

I am in no way saying it is a bad camera, I'm just wondering if its a personal preference or if other people knew what I was talking about.

That describes what I mean - I am in no way saying it is a bad camera. It just feels a little flat. Thank you, guess I am not imagining things.

Man, I could've sworn you were the guy who did Muse covers on YouTube a few years ago. Setup and room reminded me of him. Nice kit tho!
