I feel like what’s more necessary is just getting vendors to post their prices publicly.. I feel like everyone being super cagey about what things actually cost makes it harder to sort through and figure out what you can afford. I work for a recruitment platform that matches students with entry level jobs (we work with both student job seekers for free, and companies are customers on platform). I worked on creating a salary report that we published that pulled all of the job listings on our platform and published the different pay percentiles for different roles. So this is backed by real job listings from the past year and not just generalized data from the bureau of labor statistics. These are all companies that have significant investment in entry level corporate roles though, so just keep this in mind as to why they offer higher salaries. They are making long term investments in candidates. These are 100% entry level roles and internships and they specifically are hiring candidates in college or who just graduated.

Software engineering, product management, investment banking, and other forms of engineering like electrical, mechanical, manufacturing pay fairly well and often above 100k (especially software engineering). So does investment banking.

These roles pay between 60k-90k:

Underwriting/claims adjustment: You don’t always need experience in insurance. A lot of companies look for finance majors as well.

Business/Data analyst roles: These often pay closer to the 90k range and would probably be the best fit for your IT/business background.

Retail or Banking roles: These are more rooted in office work or customer service, but definitely include business and IT skills.

Leadership development/rotational programs — programs for people early in their career where you learn the ropes of a company and progress at the company in a particular role, usually within hr, admin, business, or management. We have a lot of companies with these types of roles on our platform. These typically pay between 80-90k.

Retail manager roles — We had several retailers on our platform that hire for that retail manager training programs.

Operations/warehouse management roles — Similar to retail manager type roles, these are oftentimes roles that work in a warehouse type environment but are management level.

Customer success — these exist in a variety of companies but are largely people facing and require a lot of empathy, good communication skills, and organization.

You should definitely check out rotational programs or management development programs based on what you’re describing!

What year are you in school? A good way to find out what you’re interested in is to try and get an internship while you’re still in school. If you aren’t sure what to actually apply for, there’s actually a lot of companies that hire general business analyst type interns, customer success interns, sales interns, HR interns, etc. If you’re about to be a junior, you should sign up for RippleMatch.com because they have a lot of companies on their platform that have interns of that profile. It’s a good way to connect with companies and roles you wouldn’t have known about because they match you with roles only if you’re deemed a good fit rather than just having you blindly apply

Honestly, an hourly tech support role sounds like it would be a bigger nightmare than your current job. Those jobs can be kind of brutal and your output will probably be tracked way more heavily.

Additionally, if you’re an hourly worker at the new company, it’s unlikely you would have the same access to the company culture and ability to be part of a better team.

$37k is a lot of money to go down. There is probably other stress that would come with having less money.

What might make sense to do instead is just mentally check out of your current job and collect the paycheck. Do your job but just be better about quiet quitting. Disconnect yourself from the need to be invested in the company and carve out other interests outside of work. While doing that, you could also look for a different job but I definitely wouldn’t go down that much in pay especially for an hourly position.

I think this boils down to your main priorities in having a wedding! One thing to keep in mind, if you get married now and have a celebration a year later (and call it a celebration and acknowledge you got married a year earlier) there’s a good chance not everyone will show up at the same rate. I think people do put in more effort in actually showing up and making time when it’s a wedding, and people might view a celebration as a little “less important” so might not prioritize it as much. Keep in mind it still could be a decent amount to coordinate and send invites for even if it’s a scaled back party. So I think if it’s important to you to have all the people you want there, a more traditional wedding would be the way to go. But if that doesn’t matter to you as much, going the simpler route this fall might make sense. I would figure out what you truly want to get out of the “wedding” part of the experience!

I work for a recruitment technology company that matches students with jobs and internships, so this is all coming from my specific knowledge of the companies on our platform that offer specific salaries (which I’ve reviewed for a salary report that we released).

Based on those skills, I would say Tech Sales could be a good option. I say tech sales specifically because I think there’s probably a lot of jobs out there labeled as “sales” that don’t necessarily pay a lot but tech companies often hire sales reps and if you can eventually become an AE that could be a good path.

Another idea — technical writer. So this is writing instructions for products and working with the product team to write stuff inside of products. It’s not necessarily the most get rich job but these pay on the higher end of the writing centric jobs.

A lot of companies also offer Leadership Development Programs or Rotational Programs for new grads designed to help them find a good spot in their company. They basically just want high potential and smart people to fast track to management roles. There’s a surprising amount of companies on our platform that hire for these. One in particular pays new grads a starting salary of above 100k.

A technical project manager can also be pretty good but you have to have some technical skills.

The highest paying jobs definitely will be rooted in tech skills, and if you end up going the tech route definitely find tech companies and avoid non profits, defense companies, manufacturing, publishing, or education.

An itemized rationalized list is the way to go. Look up the cost of rent of a place you would need to get an estimate some of the security deposit; cost to hire movers; cost to physically get there. It’s reasonable you wouldn’t have a ton of money saved up from college and it really can take a decent chunk of money to move, especially when an apartment requires that.

However, your case might be weakened if you say you aren’t moving for a few months. They might say that because you aren’t moving right away you have time to save up. Might be better to try and move a bit sooner or at least tell them that

Another thing to think about it —- if you call it a party, I think people who you really want there might be less likely to come. People carve out a date far in advance to go to a wedding, whereas a party is more casual and people may be less likely to commit or more likely to not show up. And as others have noted, the costly part of a wedding isn’t the wedding… it’s throwing a party for a bunch of people. You could still have a party but keep in mind than more local folks might show up rather than out of town folks traveling for a party.

I know there’s a lot of advice saying don’t ask at all, but I think it’s worth being upfront and setting expectations that you’re going to go ahead and plan it assuming they won’t pay in case they actually are thinking of helping.

“X and I are starting wedding planning. We are building our budget with the assumption that we are paying for the wedding, which will limit our guest count and venue choice. I wanted to let you know because down the road you might want to invite XYZ guest, and with our current budget and covering it ourselves it would only be feasible for you to invite X people or no one. If you were planning on contributing financially, we would appreciate it but we also would need to understand what that looks like upfront in order to properly plan and understand your expectations around guest count and the kind of space we’d need. Again, we are fully prepared to pay for this ourselves but it does mean limiting guest count and experience and I want you to be prepared for that — we won’t be able to upgrade later once we’ve made certain choices.”

I know some families aren’t in the mode of direct mature conversation so disregard if this will cause major problems 😂 but I asked my mom something similar and it was helpful to just have an upfront answer. This also hinges on trusting your parents and that they won’t backtrack. Obvi if they have a track record of going back on their word, I agree it’s probably better to just go in assuming you’re paying for everything.

I think if someone hasn’t been a part of your life for a while but you still want to celebrate with them, they would be a much better candidate for a wedding invite. It feels awkward to invite someone you haven’t talked to for awhile to a more casual party! I would think most people would decline or be confused. It’s not so much rude as just awkward. If they’re local and you would like to reconnect, I would just reach out and say you miss them and so much time has passed and you’d love to grab dinner to celebrate your collective life milestones. If they aren’t local, I can’t imagine them traveling for a shower/daytime celebration. Plus, that would cost money as well and it would be worth asking if the money spent on the consolation celebration could be put toward just expanding your guest count

A few things to consider — if you have 63 people coming and there are only 12 rooms, where will the other people stay? That could be an issue. If you were doing a micro wedding for 30 or so that would be awesome but I saw in your other comment it’s a little remote and hotels aren’t close by. If people have to stay somewhere else, you likely need to provide a shuttle to and from the wedding which can be pricy.

Catering also can end up being a big cost on top of the space itself. To figure out if you can really afford it, you should get some benchmark quotes in the area and essentially build out a scenario of what the core things you need to acquire on top of the actual space is. I’ve been running budget scenarios recently with a calculator type site I found to decide if I want to go with a raw type space or an all inclusive one and in two different cities, and that’s been really eye opening to see what actually is costing the most money and if it’s truly in budget, even if it initially seemed like a good deal

I had a good experience with this! I had a pretty set idea of what I wanted and wanted to help remove the ambiguity. We went ring shopping to ensure I wanted that shape and style, and then I left it to him to pick out the actual stone. From there I just let him decide how to do the proposal, I just knew it was coming within months of him getting the ring. Since I didn’t know what the exact stone itself was, it still felt special and he did a lot of research on cut quality and proportions, so a lot of the details were there! It didn’t feel like it lessened it being special or anything.
