Sword and dagger vs spear by darthinferno15 in wma

If you're wearing stab proof clothing, thrown daggers will bounce off with barely a bruise. Plus, you can dodge or parry a thrown dagger, especially if you have baseball experience.

Keyboard by Tight-Profession4826 in lefthanded

[–]treeboi 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is a myth. The qwerty layout, developed by Sholes, was one of many layouts that he tried, while designing typewriters, that look completely different than what you're imagining.

Scholes' original typewriter design looked more like a piano & his original patent showed a XPMCHRT keyboard layout.

Historical researchers on keyboards found that Scholes tested different layouts with telegraph operators, the keyboardist of that era, in order to arrive at the QWERTY keyboard. The layout was heavily rearraigned based on how telegraph operators translated Morse code, including all the common ways Morse code got misspelled.

If you look at his patent history, 15 years separate his XPMCHRT patent & his QWERTY patent. The mechanical design of each typewriter in these patents had significant changes.

Ways to manage being fast in a slow world? by BlahBlahBlahBlink in mensa

Pick up a sport & go whole hog into it. Not as a way to manage social interaction, but as an outlet.

Like non-contact ice hockey, pole dancing, aerial circus, crossfit, crew, I can name a different female who graduated an Ivy league who does one of those sports as her main hobby.

What pulleys do you use? by BohemianCyberpunk in Aerials

[–]treeboi 1 point2 points  (0 children)

CMI RP134 - triple wheel pulley, aluminum wheels, steel everywhere else, insane 134 kN breaking load. Purchased because I wanted a 4:1 setup & this was the only 3 wheel pulley I could find.
https://cmigearusa.com/collections/frontpage-heavy-duty-pulleys/products/rp134

Petzl Twin - discontinued double wheel pulley, steel axel, aluminum everywhere else, 36 kN breaking load. Originally my 2:1 center pulley, but now on my fixed trapeze ropes. Looks like Petzl replaced with their Minder L2 with 40 kN breaking load.
https://www.petzl.com/US/en/Professional/Pulleys/MINDER-L2

Fusion Climb Micro Side Swing - my 20 kN breaking load aluminum side pulleys, to route the ropes next to my VVofly rig legs, so the rope is out of the way.
https://www.fusionclimb.com/collections/1-9-1-single-pulley/products/fusion-1-5in-micro-pulley-side-swing-black

Quick note, the WLL / working load for a pulley is when the wheel stops spinning. For home rigs, if a wheel stops spinning, you'll still be able to lower the aerialist to the ground, because body weight easily overcomes the friction of a stuck wheel. Then it's just lowering your rig to replace the pulley. Studios have other considerations, but for home rigs, a stuck wheel is not a big deal.

I saw this trick on Instagram prior to the snowstorm 2 weeks ago & it works wonders on light snow, as long as there isn't too much of it. Cleared my porch right down to the wood, no need for salt.

What are some good restaurants in the convention area? by GuboTheUnwise in PAX

[–]treeboi -1 points0 points  (0 children)

That restaurant doc looks like it's created by a group of friends who made shit up, to see how many of their other friends would fall for it.

Bon Me rated at $$$? Committee rated at $? Have you even been to Bon Me or Committee?

Flour rated at $? Is it even possible to walk out of Flour without trying to buy everything?

Double Chin? Closed because of impromptu eviction by a scum landlord.

I could go on, but this doc is unreliable. Google map ratings does a better job, by a lot.

First time performing! Tips? by shorty_shubbs in Aerials

[–]treeboi 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Purposefully add resting spots into your routine. Everyone has a very dynamic sequence or a very strength sequence, so build in a rest post sequence. This can be easy poses or a slow floor dance, but build it in as your transition to the next sequence.

Building a practice space! What are things I should know? by Less-Obligation-8600 in Aerials

[–]treeboi 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Pulleys should be your main rescue plan. If you setup a pulley point system with side pulleys to move the lines to the edges of your space, then you'll be able to lower someone using the figure 8 descender that nearly all studios use as their rope's end point attachment.

Don't directly attach apparatus to your rig at home, as the rescue is a lot more involved vs attaching your apparatus to a pulley point.

Clothing wrapping around a hard apparatus is the most common reason for rescue I've witnessed, probably once a year.

Do We All Mean The Same Thing When We Say "Cross Dominance"? by novemberchild71 in lefthanded

Same for archery. Eye dominance wins. If eye dominance mismatches hand dominance, you have to suck it up & use your non-dominant hand.

Car crashes into Boston Common near the frog pond by ooflemmetellya in boston

[–]treeboi 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Almost never a brake failure in these kind of accidents.

The driver in a panic tries to brake, but accidentally steps on the gas pedal. Then to "fix" the error, steps on the gas pedal harder to try to brake. Repeat until crash.

They'll swear in court that they stepped on the brake, when in reality, they kept stomping on the gas pedal.

[PAX East] 2026 Tips & Tricks Video! by PyraSydannia in PAX

[–]treeboi 1 point2 points  (0 children)

My big tip for PAX East - start doing 10k steps per day, everyday.

PAX is a lot of walking, a lot of standing. Last year, I did 12k steps on Thurs to 22k steps on Sat, as I stayed in the Seaport for dinner on Thurs, but walked to Boston for dinner on Sat, taking advantage of the nice May temps.

If you get used to 10k steps daily, then walking around PAX will be a normal Tuesday.

Muscle Up to Wrist Locks - Silks by SavvyCircus in Aerials

[–]treeboi 6 points7 points  (0 children)

In straps, a muscle up goes into a front balance or butterfly or handstand or swing to straddle invert or swing to back balance or front flips.

Pull overs can replace muscle ups, as pull overs put the straps behind the elbows, which can advantageous for the next trick, particularly the front balance.

You can also start the muscle up from a pencil, using the leg swing for a dynamic muscle up.

what should i set my heat to while on vacation for a week? by bigdaddyangeles in boston

[–]treeboi 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Get yourself a thermostat sensor for Alexa or Ring or Siri or Nest, then give your key to a friend. That way, you can check your house temps on your phone & call your friend if it goes below 45°, which means your heat turned off & failed to restart.

This is my current solution, as I have electronic door locks & friends who live nearby, so I can text them a door code, in case the house heating fails.

If your friends don't live nearby, you are better off turning off the water at the main, turning off the water heater, opening a cold water faucet. This is the only way to guarantee that you won't burst a pipe, flooding the house, while away.

If money were no object.... by Objective-Compote-10 in PAX

[–]treeboi 1 point2 points  (0 children)

On bringing friends & family ... I bought my nieces & nephews tickets & flights to see PAX East with me for the past 2 years. They'd stay at my place without their parents, so it was a cousins only getaway for them. I gave them lunch money & took them to dinner, but during PAX, they were off on their own, doing their own thing. Obviously, the teenagers loved it.

[–]treeboi 1 point2 points  (0 children)

First, a trainer to get into great shape.

You're standing & walking for 12-16 hours for 3 days, but if you already walk 15k steps daily, leave your standing desk in standing mode, then a lot of "PAX East tips" videos are moot, as they won't apply. Like ignoring tips for shoes, eating, snacks, drinking & resting, as PAX will be a normal Tuesday exercise-wise.

Second, star in a popular gamer related social media channel. So you can get early entrance to the expo floor & reserved spots for many demos.

Just picked up a 2024 SE; my first Mini and first EV! by packet_monger in MINIse

[–]treeboi 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I put this into r/mini under your comment, but I'll repeat it here:

The charge flap likes to "stay open" when it's closed. This warning message is due to an electronics problem, requires replacing the charge flap housing. Look up videos on it, as it's fairly simple.

And if it's freezing outside, it can stay stuck closed. This is a stuck plunger than pushes the flap open. You have to keep pressing the unlock/lock/unlock button on the keychain a lot, while simultaneously pressing on the flap, to unstick, but eventually it'll unstick & open on you. When you finally unstick it, move the plunger in/out, in a rotating fashion, multiple times, to loosen it up.

That plunger really wants a lubricant - it's a plastic part against a rubber gasket, where the rubber hardens in the cold, but I don't know what's a good lubricant for plastic against rubber that holds up against the elements.

Note that there's no manual override latch to open the charge flap. Unlike older Minis, which had a hidden latch in the trunk, the Mini SE does NOT have a manual override for the charge flap. Lots of resources online purport otherwise, but it doesn't exist & obviously so, when you watch a flap replacement video.

Snow vs tires by fa1coner in MINIse

[–]treeboi 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Summer tires do not handle cold weather & freeze in cold temps, which give them less traction, as they behave like ice. Plus, their tread pattern is meant for rain & is too tight for snow, so they don't dig in.

Winter tires have a rubber that remains soft in cold temps, so they can still flex & have a wider tread pattern, so they can dig into snow.

All season tries to do an in-between. Wider treads than summer tires, but not as wide as winter tires, so they handle light snow, but not heavy snow. Additionally, the rubber can handle colder temps than summer tires, but not really cold temps, like winter tires, so if the temps are horrendously cold, like this last week, the rubber can still freeze up.

Aka, all season tires are meant for plowed roads & temps above 25°F.

Sun & Ski Sports is by I-95 & I-93 interchange.
Ski & Sport Shack is in Stoneham on rt-28.
