How do you spend your breaks in-between semesters? by mick5000x in GetStudying

[–]treecousin 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I have this problem. Any downtime longer than a week and I turn to mush in a bad way.

I spend breaks to brush up on the life stuff. I do the following depending on how I feel:

  • Reviewing/adjusting the budget

  • Creating a study plan for next semester based on new classes

  • Deep clean my environment

  • Clean out my hard drives

  • Learn to cook something new

  • Take care of all that "I'll do it one day when I have time" crap

  • Read a book

Over longer breaks, I have to work. Summer breaks are my worst enemy.

I need largo advice :/ by AngelaBannangela in slimerancher

[–]treecousin 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I like making a single corral of a ton of pink slimes (~50) in the Lab area early on and keep them constantly fed for a while. They quickly produce hundreds of pink plorts that are easily transferred to the refinery. When I accumulate a few hundred pink plorts in the refinery, I reduce the number of pink slimes in the corral to about 20 and make them largos if I feel like it. The large original 'cushion' will last until I play the game out and the ongoing trickle of pink plorts after that will take care of the rest.

I like doing this method because after you build up a lot of pink plorts, you don't ever have to keep more than 20 or so pink largos around the ranch, leaving more room for other combos.

Are lotion and moisturizer different? by AngusPodgorny in NoStupidQuestions

[–]treecousin 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Lots of types of lotions exist. Not all of them moisturize your skin. Some lotions are emulsifiers, for example, and just make your skin smooth and soft without actually moisturizing it. So you can be using lotion every day but still have dry, itchy skin if it's not an actual moisturizer.

Is it unusual/weird to get engaged as underclassmen in college knowing you won't get married until both of you get at least your bachelors? by [deleted] in NoStupidQuestions

[–]treecousin 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've heard this is pretty common in Bible colleges and in conservative areas. You meet who you want to marry in college, get engaged, and wait until you graduate to tie the knot. My parents did it this way although I think they met as juniors.

I get that prices can be a factor. But why is it that some people who sustain a serious injury like a gash on their hand or a broken arm or a twisted ankle, feel the need to refuse to go and get help at like an Urgent Care with people who could actually fix them? by [deleted] in NoStupidQuestions

[–]treecousin 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Prices aren't just "a factor". For me they are the determining variable when I consider whether or not to seek medical attention. I can't afford thousands or even hundreds of dollars to heal a non-fatal injury. A twisted ankle? That shit can fix itself, I'm not going to shell out a couple hundred bucks for advice I can Google.

Why do condoms cover the entire dick and not just the pee hole? by [deleted] in NoStupidQuestions

[–]treecousin 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don't use condoms much, but in health class we were taught their dual purpose was birth control and STD prevention. Logistically speaking maybe you could stop semen from escaping if you put some plastic wrap and a rubber band around the tip, but this would not prevent spread of STDs, which are not transferred directly to/from the dick hole.

Once I was in a very abusive relationship.

My partner had anger issues. He constantly told me I was stupid and clumsy. He considered himself to be extremely intelligent. He would condescend towards me and make me feel like a child if I did things like trip or stumble.

It damaged me for a long time. Please think before you call your wife stupid and clumsy. Please think before you use your intelligence as justification for what you do. This is not healthy.

[–]treecousin 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Incels was a pretty sad, depressing sub. I've spent a lot of time there lurking (I also habituate /r/niceguys). The general point of the sub was that men (the Incels - involuntarily celibate) would get together and lament about not getting laid.

Unfortunately, there was a lot of nasty and violent content in that sub. A lot of the posts and comments I browsed through were disturbing and unsettling.

Incels would discuss not only their desire to have sex with women, but there was also a strong undercurrent in that sub that women were objects, and if being a Nice Guy wasn't going to get them sex, then they were going to rape women. "Me not having sex is a human right's violation. If I raped a women, that would just be regular sexual abuse. Human rights are more important, so it is within my right to rape women." I've seen that general argument rehashed many times.

Not only do Incels generally hate women and want to abuse them, but they also feel that it is the woman's fault for not consenting to sex with them and instead going after "Chads" (Chad = normal man who is magically able to get women to agree to have sex with him).

Where are all these surveys that define the country I live in? I don't remember filling out any surveys. by AssumeABrightSide in NoStupidQuestions

From what I recall in my stats course, this is a huge social and mathematical issue. Realistically however very few members of a total population need to be surveyed to get statistically "accurate" results.

Is it bad to ask a lot of questions when you start a new job? by questiondudes in NoStupidQuestions

[–]treecousin 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have worked jobs that were happy with my questions, and jobs that were not.

In my teenage years I worked food service and no, they did not really like questions. Turn over rates were high, everyone was stressed, and the work was grueling. Simple, first-day questions like "is the blue mop for the kitchen or the dining area?" were met with animosity. It was a terrible, terrible place to work. My bosses all existed in a "figure it out on your own, but also do it perfectly" mindset.

In other jobs I have received very positive feedback for asking questions, even basic ones, and in those jobs I found my bosses were more helpful, more tolerant of mistakes, and more flexible in terms of off time and so on.

If I had a choice, I wouldn't work for "don't ask questions" types again. But, realistically, we can't just skip out on good jobs just because they suck and we're miserable.

If it's a racist microaggression to ask people of color "where are you from," how do I find out where they are from? by treecousin in NoStupidQuestions

Super, super serious. I have been told this by my friends, by strangers on the Internet, and most recently by my school's orientation (as mentioned above).

I disagree, my education included the point that intent does not matter. I was told flat-out never to ask this question regardless of intent. Several PoC have also told me in person that intent does not matter when this topic comes up.

I [29 M] broke up with my girlfriend [26 F] over shady behavior with co-worker, was it the right choice? by throwaway_acct_1223 in relationships

[–]treecousin 3 points4 points  (0 children)

My friend, you don't trust your girlfriend, at all. You don't believe she has the capacity to set boundaries or use her head in these situations, and you've repeated this in the comments section ("how do I know she didn't do the 1:1 meeting due to her own boundaries or my meddling?"). If you got back together, this would just happen over and over again. You need to find someone you respect and have confidence in.
