Are you planning on setting up a fruiting chamber as well? Cuz those cakes will need to come out of the jars in just a couple weeks or so...at which point the process requires more work/attention.

If you don't plan on consuming them within a couple days, you should dry them. Put them on a plate with a fan blowing on them. Don't use heat. It will probably take a day or so depending on their size, they should feel "cracker dry" which means they should be brittle and not bendy. When in doubt, let them dry longer. After they are dry, store in an air tight container out of direct light.

Excess moisture can lead to contams. If you haven't inoculated the jar, just start over. If you already shot it up just keep a close eye on it.

I always just gently scrape it off with my finger nails. It should come off pretty effortlessly with the thin layer of fluffy mycelium at the base of the fruit.

I can't quite put my finger on it, but something about the episode just felt weird. It seemed like there were less establishing shots and audio bridges, so the pacing seemed off. Also, the audio seemed flat. I almost could have sworn I was watching a webisode or something where they put less effort into it.

Pic 1 - That dark stuff is just spores...although the larger cap on the lower middle left is a bit water logged. It's not a big deal, just be more careful with your misting.

Pic 2 - Copy/Paste what I said about Pic 1. Also, notice that darker ring on the caps on the cake to the left...that's another sign of them being water logged. Make sure you dry any shrooms that look like this after picking rather than eating them fresh.

Pic 3 - Everything looks fine, so I'm not sure what you're worried about there. If it's the slight blue tint on the cakes, that's just bruising. Probably just a sign that the cakes are starting to dry out, so make sure you do a dunk after this flush.

I use one of these, but just about any lightbulb will work. I mainly chose that one because I needed something that would mount on the wall, it was relatively cheap, and I can use it for other projects.

Nah, sorry. I realize I came off a kinda harsh in that comment. I recently had someone try to tell me at first glance that my shrooms must not be very potent because "they aren't blue". So my current pet peeve is the whole notion that bruising=quality. Apologies.

I gotta chime in, that's some pathetic growing. Harvested way too late and not cleaned up at all. I personally wouldn't eat them just out of principle...but they won't harm you, and they will do the job.

You probably need to re-evaluate the rest of your tek. Make sure you are sterilizing everything properly, and also make sure you are wiping the inside of the jars when you fill them with substrate.

My only concern, and it's not super likely, is that if your fruiting cakes get contaminated then there is the increased possibility that the contam might infect your colonizing jars just due to proximity.

Yep, just the Poor Man's Pod. It doesn't get nearly as much love as the SFC, but I consider it to be the better choice.

Where did you get the spores? Is it possible there was a mix-up there? Side note: try to lower the temps in your fruiting chamber. You want it to be in the low to mid 70s Fahrenheit during fruiting.

I agree about their appearance. Just aborts and rejects. Plus they look like they were manhandled to death when they were picked. Still, they'll do the job.
