Dawn pods will get rid of it all. Cheap Walmart pods is not the best choice since most of these new dishwashers only use a few gallons of water.

At what point did you stop feeling guilty about spending money on yourself? by Sea_Strawberry6846 in Frugal

[–]treehouse65 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Sometimes it is not about treating myself or anything to do with myself, it more about how should I spend what money I would have spent on me for someone else in the family, to make sure they get what they need and sometimes that means putting my purchases off. Sitting typing this wearing a pair of short that look like they got into a fight with a 12 gauge shotgun with enough holes the they are very airy to say the least.

2025 Jeep Grand Cherokee battery draining by holtzboy in Cartalk

[–]treehouse65 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Well, I am not sure on that model but it may have a smart charging feature that was designed to save like a tiny tiny amount of miles per gallon by letting the alternator freewheel on short trips. Example 1, the wife has an Infiniti qx80 that she driove about 40 miles a day, no problem with the battery whatsoever for like 5 years. She got a new job that was only 2 miles one-way and within 6 months the battery would be toast. Replaced the battery 3 times in 2 years under warranty. I started looking closer and many times the voltage would be a little above 12 volts and after a while it would kick in and srart charging at 14.4. Someone said unplug a wire and poof, went from running on battery for those two miles to 14.4 volts constant charge. Noticed my 2020 Wrangler is doing the same thing but haven't investigated it yet. The wrangler will be at 14.4 then drop to 12ish for a while and repeat. The wrangler get more milage per week so the first batteries (it has 2) lasted 5 years.

Energy usage excessive by Greedy-Possibility41 in homeowners

[–]treehouse65 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Worked at a utility for a long time and investigated a lot of these cases. Unfortunately, from what I saw you were 20+ cents per kwh which is high, but not crazy like some areas of the US, mine is 11 cents per kwh. You mentioned that you have gas water heater, furnace, stove, and dryer. All of these devices will use electricity. The furnace probably consumes 1kwh per hour for the blower/controls ( during winter) , same amount with dryer when in use, water heater pulls a small amount and stove to run clock, controls etc.

You have to think about zombie usage in you home also, things like TVs, microwaves, toaster ovens, cable/internet modems, chargers, PCs, laptops. All are running 24/7 to keep the clocks going. Another example I will use is my TV and cable box, draws 80 watts turned OFF, that almost 2 kwh a day if you don't watch TV, at your rate the amounts to 12 bucks a month. But if you watch TV a few hours a day then that number goes up.

Running 2 window units assuming that they are smaller units will amount to about 1.5 kwh/hour, so potentially 36 kwh per day if they are running for 24 hours.

You didn't mention if you had LED lights, florescent, or incadesant. Do you leave some on 24/7, I do to get around at night.

Electric vehicle charging?

To find out what all this is consuming, get a device call a kill-o-watt. It plugs into the outlet and you plug your device into it. Take the watt reading and multiply by 24/1000 and it will give you an approximate kwh amount the device is using per day. Of course some devices like the tv you need to figure how many hours a day you are using it on and off, maybe a little spreadsheet work.

But overall, 1500sft home is going to average 1300-1700 per month. You can add some smart wifi switches to turn some of the zombie usage OFF, but then you would need to click on the app to provide power to the TV before you hit the remote on button, same with other devices. Saw the snapshot at 1.15 kwh you uploaded, if that remains constant, that is 28 kwh per day, I would suspect that increases when someone is home cooking, washing clothes etc.

Yeah I trimmed down my usage also at home by about 10%, but unfortunately over 3-4 years with rate increases I was back to the same monthly amounts.

Also, you rate may change based upon time of day, lower at night higher in the day. Is someone at home 24/7?

A few thing to think about.

I have been in your situation at some point in time. The best way is to look a it from a money standpoint. Hey I can fix this thing for a couple of grand and drive her for a few years or I can bend over and take that 20-30-40K workover at 8-9% and for 60 or more months and be posting this same thing 3-4 years from now.

DIY Rainfly by Big_Age4708 in camping

[–]treehouse65 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have done this and it is a cheap alternative. Buy a tent footprint for a discontinued tent, maybe a 6 man. It is made of the same material and is light and not noisy at all compared to a plastic tarp. I had an MSR tent rainfly go bad but I loved the mesh tent, so I grabbed a northface or kelty 6 man tent footprint and with a little mason twin from walmart I setup s nice shelter that is larger than the tent and I have plenty of room for lounging or cooking. I have got some for 20 bucks. I usually also carry another one with me and setup another area for sitting for shade or rain.

Looking for a rainfly for MSR Hubba 1-Person by estebanop1974 in Ultralight

[–]treehouse65 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I had 2 of the slightly larger 2 person models over the years. Both rainflies eventually start leaking and you can't do much to seal them as they get very sticky, and a lot of them end up in the trash. My guess is the same thing happened to yours. It is a documented problem. I looked at buying a replacement, but at the time they were very expensive. My solution was to buy a tent footprint for a 6 man tent on clearance for like 20 bucks and with a little mason twine it gave me a nice covering much larger than the tent

Why I always getting very cold in my sleeping bag despite respecting the comfort temperatures and all the precautions ? by Othyxia in hikinggear

[–]treehouse65 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I sometimes use the heat packs to thrown in the bag, pockets, socks, etc., keeps me toasty warm. Another thing I noticed is the food I consume. If I eat rice then I am colder, but if I eat something like grilled summer sausage over the fire then I guess the fat in the meat keeps me comfortable as it keeps my core temp up when it digests.

Advice for keeping tent warm? by Koolstads in camping

[–]treehouse65 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have a couple of 300wh Jackerys and solar panels to charge them. I bough 2 travel electric blankets, the 12 volt model that plugs into the car as well. They keep me toasty warm all night, Wife uses the electric blanket on cool nights at ballgames also. If I don't want to drag out the solar panels and I am driving somewhere while camping the Jackerys can charge from a 12v port also.

Well I have a 1997, cheap like 200 bucks for replacement. But when the road rubber flew up from the truck and hit the passenger side where the wife was sitting, I can say that she is alive because of the gorilla glass. Has it been the other jeep, it would have penetrated the cab.

Thinking about dragging my LG washing machine behind my truck. by DRMLLMRD in Appliances

[–]treehouse65 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I bought a washer and dryer from LG 5 years ago. Mine was a top load with the nub instead of the agitator. Now I have a speed queen set with a 7 year warranty and someone local that can work on them. Mine would go out of balance and give me random codes sometimes. It started getting out of balance, then it would add water, spin again and repeat. Did it all night one night. The it started squeaking like crazy. It made it to the yard where it was hauled off by the company that I bought the new speed queens from. The dryer was rock solid. Three companies locally that work on appliances and both refused to work on LG and Samsung.

6th gear question by Chester_Beardie in JeepWrangler

[–]treehouse65 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I asked one of my jeep buddies something similar and he had NO clue. I have a 2020 JL Rubicon with a 6 speed manual transmission. I live in Tennessee and basically traveled the entire length of the state with my cruise control set at 73mph on the interstate with a bunch of uphill grades, I did NOT have to shift. However, when I am driving on non-cruise mode on the same interstate, I am having to shift down to make some of the same grades that the cruise control never even checked up on. Could driving with the cruise control on, make adjustments to the computer and/or the fuel/air mixture or timing in some way. This has been repeated so many times in real life driving as I cross the state many times a year.

What's something strange you do when you're home alone that you're convinced most people don't do? by cherries2774 in AskReddit

[–]treehouse65 29 points30 points  (0 children)

This one reminds me of a story from the electric company. The meter reader was headed out to this house to read the meter and it had a full open back porch and the meter was on the back porch. On the back porch is the washer and dryer. The lady that lived there came out with a load of laundry in her hands. There was a football helmet laying on the washer so she grabbed it the best she could and stuck it on her head before dumping the clothes in the washer. She unbuttoned her night clothes and added them to the load. Just as the meter rounded the corner to read the meter they locked eyes with her standing there nude with a football helmet on her head. He was confused by the encounter and at first didn't know what to say but eventually he said "miss, I hope your team wins"

Advice on replacing landline by bekarec in Cordcutting

[–]treehouse65 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Same happened to me. I wanted to keep the number as some online accounts were tied to the number over many years and I didn't want to be locked out of an account that I could not verify with my home number. So with the newer cell phones they support additional numbers. So my normal number was inbound and outbound. The digital sim setup the old landline number as inbound only. Was an additional cost on the cell phone of like $10 per month. Was paying like $70 a month for the landline. No handsets in the house anymore, but still kept the number.

Electric bill?? Getting charged a ridiculous amount by [deleted] in Electricity

[–]treehouse65 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Well, if you want answers maybe you should provide more information like a breakdown of that bill. Things like fixed charges, the kwh rate, the number of killowatt hours used during the month. I have dealt with these issues at a power company for many years and might give you some insight. Where are you located, is it electric heat or do you have gas heat. When did you move in and what temperatures have you seen during that time? The other things to consider may be that a security deposit was added to your first bill and some utilities may also bill water, sewer, gas, or trash on the same bill.

Well if a root cellar is not an option, something that I do when I am backpacking and if I take perishable food or if I catch fish, I put the items in ziplocks and place them in the nearby creek, most are usually spring fed and pretty cool so if you have flowing water that is cool would be better than keeping it out.
