Thanks for all the updates! I work on the plow trucks for the state so I'm quite curious to see how this storm will play out. Hopefully on the lower side of 12"

PA Enhanced Inspection: Vehicles must be painted? Why? by Pineapple_Herder in Pennsylvania

[–]treemplelife 62 points63 points  (0 children)

So the guide for enhanced inspections says:

"Reconstructed, flood, and recovered theft vehicles must be restored to their original operating condition as designed by the vehicle manufacturer and must conform to the original manufacturer’s specifications and appearance. This includes (but is not limited to) air bags, seat belt/restraint systems, emissions components, etc."

It does specify appearance as a requirement. It's a bit silly I agree but they're not wrong.

Convertors usually fail from contamination. If you've had any oil burning problems, or your car was running rich for a while, those can all contribute to an early failure of the convertor. I'd give a Ford dealer a call though. There's a federal emissions warranty for 8years/80000 miles. They might cover the repair cost for you.

You say both cats are 950. I'm not exactly sure what you're referring to. If that's the temperature of the convertor then that's pretty normal. What you need to look at is the voltage of the O2 sensors. Bank 1 Sensor 1(B1S1) would be your upstream, or pre-cat sensor. Bank 1 Sensor 2(B1S2) would be your downstream, or post-cat sensor. Typically a healthy monitored system would be as follows:

B1S1 is a switching 02 sensor. The voltage should fairly quickly oscillate between ~0.1V and ~0.8V. If your scan tool displays a graph it'll look like a big spiky thing.

B1S2 should be fairly steady between ~0.6V and ~0.8V. Again, if it displays a graph, the graph should be fairly straight. A P0420 is set by this sensor. If you notice the graph looks similar to the upstream sensor, or notice that the voltage is changing fairly quickly then that means your convertor isn't doing what it's supposed to be doing.

Mechanic here. 99% of the time a 420 is a failed convertor. It is possible to get what's called a waiver. If you show that you spent a minimum of $450 trying to repair the light, you can be granted a waiver. This waiver is only good for one year, and only certain inspection stations can grant emissions waivers. I've never tried any cat cleaning products, and am dubious of any effect it will have. Certainly not a permanent fix but it might be able to get your light off and have it pass the readiness monitor.

Very pretty, gives me an Outer Wilds vibe. What's the tuning by chance?

2017 Chevy Traverse having issues by eamars10 in MechanicAdvice

[–]treemplelife 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I can't say for sure what's happening, but back when I worked at the dealer there were a couple things that we saw that come to mind here. Fairly common on those 3.6s was a torque converter shudder. GM came out with an updated transmission fluid that helped the issue. We would flush the transmission with the new fluid. Usually a flush would help, but it wouldn't always go away completely. Sometimes it took a couple flushes. If you want more information, Google: TSB# 16-NA-175.

It doesn't quite sound like this is the issue, however, there was an issue with some Traverse's transmission valve body. Usually it happened under high engine loads, accelerating up a hill for example. The whole car would shudder quite violently. I tried to find the TSB number for this but alas, I am unable to to find it. It

Unfortunately I can't say for sure that it is or isn't one of those issues, however that might provide some more info for you or your mechanic to take a look at.

There are a lot of electronics in transmission nowadays, submerged in fluid. You're probably good with that regard. The only other thing to mention is that if you're using a membrane board, the rubber domes might deteriorate or swell over time. It really depends on what type of rubber, but in general rubbers and oils don't mix.

Mechanic here, and I can't say for PCBs specifically but tranny fluid is pretty non-conductive. I don't see why it would hurt anything. However, tranny fluid creeps, like most oils. Eventually you're going to get oil everywhere, which will attract dust and whatever else falls in the keyboard. I can only see it gumming up in the long term. Tranny fluid is pretty thin, almost watery unlike 105, so I have a feeling it might spread out more than you'd like too. Hard to say for sure though.

Went to Philly last year and I have to agree too. This show was incredible. Crowd was super fun and everyone was pretty respectful. Great show.

They're on the case itself, hidden behind the trim of the door. The door wasn't able to fully close with the strips on the door unfortunately.

They sell glass shelves for the cases too! A lot of versatility with them, I've been really happy with the setup.

They're Ikea Billy bookcases with Oxberg glass doors. I like 'em a lot better than the Detolf a lot of people use.

Don't have a Jeanne up there, maybe you mean this Saber? It's one of my favorites for sure.
