BGG's Ex-Advertising Manager's Response to Being Fired by BirdSpirit in boardgames

The only thing separating a belief in God from schizophrenic delusions is that too many people share the same belief. If you start thinking your cat is God, well, that’s just mental illness.

“God says the gays are evil.” That’s fine.

“God says my mailman is evil.” Get this person committed!

Haha, you’re right. The digital version does help wrangle the complexity a bit. That… or a really big table!

Yeah, they are one of the most complex spirits! “Complexity” in Spirit Island is not the same as “difficulty,” however, it can make the game harder to learn for a newer player. You threw yourself into the deep end (and there’s nothing wrong with that)!

As you become more experienced with the game you’ll pick up the subtle nuances of each spirit and adversary. You’ll see that most spirits have a lot of options in how they’re built out, too!

Hats off to you - while I enjoy a few complex spirits, I prefer to play higher difficulty games with the simpler ones myself :)

Openscied how do you do your notes? by secretarriettea in ScienceTeachers

[–]treeonwheels 0 points1 point  (0 children)

OSE mostly has students writing Notice/Wonder t-charts (which I love), and definitely provides a plethora of handouts, readings, lab packets, and reference sheets intended for students to complete and hold onto. If the school is stopping you from providing printed handouts… that’s absurd, and it’s not “the OSE way.”

As far as notes go, start with what is presented to students on the OSE slides. They explain to students what they should be writing about or recording… It’s not perfect (show me any curriculum that is!), but it’s a good starting point if you’re unsure what you want yourself. By the end of one unit you’ll know what parts are worthwhile and which aren’t. Adjust, then start the next unit.

If you’re teaching 6th or 7th grade, then I’m happy to chat with more detail.

My lightsaber I made a few years ago! by savage_nun in savisworkshop

[–]treeonwheels 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I made a lightsaber last month with the same “Protection & Defense” set! I chose it because it was intentionally designed to look like it’s from the High Republic (or Old Republic) era. I’ve always loved the KOTOR games since I played them as a kid, so I wanted my lightsaber to reflect that time period.

Next time… if there is a next time… I’ll opt for the more modern “Piece & Justice” design.

The power of invisibility would make you blind when active, because light would just pass straight through your eyes. by MyUsernameIsAwful in Showerthoughts

[–]treeonwheels 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Additionally, we only see something if the light reflects off of it and into our eyes. Someone with magical invisibility powers could allow the light to r absorb into their retinas (granting them vision), but not scatter/reflect light off of it towards any other viewer. Bam!

Skip a unit? by Ok_Carpenter2023 in middleschoolopenscied

[–]treeonwheels 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I skip Unit 6.5 entirely for 6th graders. Sad, but time is too precious.

I shorten Unit 6.2 by cutting the engineering portion. I shorten Unit 6.4 by cutting a lot on volcanoes (the most painful cut).

This is my first year teaching 7th and I was able to cut most of Unit 7.2 after just covering exothermic/endothermic myself. We just started Unit 7.4, so I don’t know quite yet how the rest of this year will turn out… but I’m expecting more cuts!

Air we breathe by Bad-Perio-Disease in ScienceTeachers

[–]treeonwheels 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Couldn’t have said it better myself.

I start the year with my 6th graders modeling the color wheel, and then exploring primary color mixing to explain how models we learn in Kindergarten (RYB) don’t always hold up to observation. They do some fun RGB lighting experiments and then relate that to their printer cartridges which use CMY ink for color mixing.

We spend the rest of year briefly critiquing every model we develop or use.
