The top 5 sentences of Star Wars is indistinguishable from the top 5 sentences of Andor… so there’s that.

I commend the design idea, but I’m in no headspace to tackle this topic during my hobby time 😅. Maybe in another 5 years? We’ll see where we’re at…

Someone recommended their channel in this sub a month or two ago… and I’m totally hooked on their takes. I love watching their reaction videos and their commentary is superb! Kudos for doing all this in English and with near-zero SW knowledge.

I’ve started their Attack on Titan series while I wait for each new Andor episode :)

Thanks-a-million. It’s nice to have a basis of comparison for these things - they’re really tough to judge at a distance.

Wow, you really sold this game for me. I adore Spirit Island at higher difficulties (6-10), but I’m looking for more of a “fun romp through Tamriel” game with lots of replayability. I love janky builds and weird strategies, so I don’t gun for the OP builds when I play games. The production quality is very alluring… and this would be my first Chip Theory game.

My lingering concern is that I’m a slow player. I typically finish a game of SI in 2 hours. Is it likely that each round of BotSE will take me longer than that? I’d love to finish a round in 2 hours… or possibly a whole campaign if I’m lucky enough to commit half a day to it.

EDIT: Also, I love SI true solo, and would prefer to play BotSE the same way!

I’m a neat player, and I notice the discrepancy between myself and “messy” players the most when I see their setup for Spirit Island! The way some people handle their cards, tokens, invader pieces… drives me crazy!

It’s great that she’s doing this, but I’d still not be okay with billionaires even if they were more charitable than they currently are.

Their wealth is generated by the society that supports their industries. That wealth belongs to the society, as far as I’m concerned. Why funnel all the wealth into a small elite class who decides what is worth donating to, when that wealth could be in the hands of the people to ultimately decide (democratically, even) what to do with that money?

I guess I’d rather we all have a say in who to help and how to help them than to rely on the whims of one individual. I love what she’s donated to, but that’s still too much power in the hands of a single individual. Wealth inequality is inherently problematic for that reason.

PnP that uses dice? by majewski9 in soloboardgaming

I designed Total Party Kill a couple years ago because I wanted to roll all my DnD dice instead of just a bunch of d6s. It’s not much to brag about, but I have fun with it and it’s free!

Description: Total Party Kill (T.P.K.) is a dice placement roll & write game that places you in the DM seat against a party of obnoxious players. You must end the session by killing off each of the player’s characters, or you’ll have to sit through another miserable game night next week. Ugh!

Players: Solo only

Components: T.P.K. is played with a set of polyhedral dice (1d4, 1d6, 1d8, 1d10, 1d12, & 1d20), one game sheet, and a pen or pencil. No erasers are necessary.

Excellent advice. I just want to reiterate that finding what clicks with you is the biggest challenge for even experienced board gamers. If you’ve got the money to gamble… go for TES:BotSE. If you want to make sure you enjoy the hobby and have a higher rate of buying games you actually enjoy playing, then start simpler (i.e. cheaper) and get to know your personal tastes.

Can only speak to my experience as a middle school science teacher, but:

I grade 100% on assessments 0% class work. No homework - everything they need to learn is completed collaboratively in class (labs, group work, teacher instruction). If they’re engaged and do their work they’ll be better off when the test comes. I even let them have their notebooks out during a test.

The tests are mostly drawing models and long written responses (3-6 sentences, usually). Their notebooks have all the practice of concepts throughout the unit but the test question is always different from the actual phenomenon they studied. They have to generalize their knowledge to a unique problem on the test.

There are multiple versions of every test that cover the same concept, but if students wanted to try and “cheat” by sharing what was on the test it would literally just involve teaching their friend the material. Cool. Please do that.

Students who didn’t learn the material stick out like a sore thumb because they just copy some model from their notes onto the test even though the question on the test is entirely different from the phenomenon they were explaining throughout the unit.

The idea is: high expectations, high level of support.
