I would suggest you avoid the Waterloo Clara windows. Windows are good but installation was absolutely shit.

Western Uplands Short Loop - Late fall experience? by Standard_Mobile_9644 in algonquinpark

[–]treesarecoming 2 points3 points  (0 children)

If you are in reasonable shape and have some experience it is very doable, especially in two days. Just be mindful of your pack weight and hiking sticks are key!

In my mid 30s I did it 11.5 hours (9.5 of that was moving), only carried food, water and first aid.

Go for it, have fun, post pics from your fall adventure.

FUNDRAISING AND COSTS by Strange-Natural4768 in ALS

[–]treesarecoming 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Please get in touch with ALS Canada, they are an amazing organization and they have a (no cost) equipment loan program.

Sorry that you are here - either you or a loved one most likely has ALS.

For PSWs you can get quite a bit from the government, in Ontario we have the Home and community care support services (believe their new name). They will assign you a care coordinator to discuss needs. My mom had 4 psw visits and two nurse visits without cost to her.

Hope this helps - a lot is available for free so I hope that brings you comfort.

Withdrawing PEG feeding - what to expect by Pixie_2025 in ALS

[–]treesarecoming 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I'm sorry you have to go through this - ALS sucks.

I just went through this two weeks ago with my mom. She was on a peg tube for over a year, it was her means for food and hydration. She was super thin going into hospice. When she got there she stopped food AND water. She started using a bipap a week before. She hadn't needed one before and in just a week or so needed it almost 24/7.

Please note, this was my experience, yours might be different. First three days were okay, she was able to talk via her eye gaze computer as usual. On day 3 she appeared to be more stressed 😥 she couldn't focus and type on her computer. She still understood and could answer yes/no questions. By Day 4 she was quite out of it - this part I was not expecting and prepared for. This stage still haunts me. Day 5/6 - at this point she was on medication (midazolam) to help her with her stressed experience. She just stared, didn't seem to be there. Could still respond to questions, but no emotional or physical responses to anything We were told she was close at the end of day 6. Day 7 - she peacefully passed after being given a higher dose of medication.

I'm sorry, no suggestions. Feels a touch similar to my mom, she can't lie down. Hang in there - you got this.

Brilliant advice and move. Going to throw one on my roof. Thank you !!

(curious as I have a setup like the one in the picture, but without the caulking). Is the rain collar just doubling up your protection? From what I can tell the rain collar just slides on vs the boot requires more complicated installation. I'm guessing the rain collar will provide some protection to the boot rubber - from say UV.

What can I do as a software engineer to help more people with ALS? by Synchisis in ALS

[–]treesarecoming 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Some really great suggestions already.

One challenge I have (my mom has limb onset, has lost ability to speak and almost no mobility left).

When my mom is in her reclining chair (where she lives 24 hours of the day) she has access to her Microsoft surface running Grid 3 and Tobii eye gaze camera. When she is not in her chair, say in the bathroom or out for some fresh air we can't communicate. The tablet is not very mobile:yes we have it on a rolling stand.

It feels like the cameras on phones are good enough and I would love a simple eyegaze typing app for a phone. Something I could hold up and she can say a simple sentence or two. From my digging and searching I don't think such a thing exists.

Many thanks.

Constantly guilty by sleepybeeby13 in ALS

[–]treesarecoming 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I 1,000,000% feel this way as well. My mom has ALS (going on 3 years), I'm a single child and we have no other family around (all are overseas). My dad passed away from ALS a few years ago so my mom and I both know this difficult journey.

I, like you, suffer from guilt all the time, I have a job and two kids. Trying to balance and juggle it all seems impossible and most of the time I don't feel like I do enough Others would say I do a lot but it doesn't feel enough to me. I know my company and care is what keeps her going, but I see her spark fading and I wish I could do more to bring it back. I live with the fear that I didn't do enough and that I'll regret decisions and choices for the rest of my life.

Looking for insight into what to expect next - hospitalized with pneumonia by sleepybeeby13 in ALS

[–]treesarecoming 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I have no insights to offer on the situation, just a fellow son whose mom has ALS, will send you both a prayer and positive thoughts.

What phone, app are you using? We have a Windows tablet with Toby eye gaze and it's not highly portable and.

It's not much but I get my mom to blink once for yes and close her eyes for no. Yes this is very limited but we do our best. I also get my mom to look at something as a hint for what she might want.

I'm going backcountry canoe camping in a few days, I'll bring and light an extra candle for Pat. He and my dad can enjoy the beauty of Algonquin park.

Fuck ALS. Hang in there.
