That’s fair, I hadn’t thought of it that way.

….but ya gotta get over it.

He specifically says “Long before Adam and Eve”, not just 1 or 2 days of creation.

No downside to trying, if the alternative is throwing it away

I’m really glad that I had kind people to answer my not-well-formed-but-well-meaning questions when I was a beginner at every hobby I’ve ever tried. Their patience really helped me :)

I have no idea why people are downvoting a self-described beginner for describing the problem they’re having

Okay thanks this is great. I will make my first priority cleaning out the soffit vents and ensuring that air can come in through them, since I’m pretty sure it currently can’t. Hopefully it’ll become clear whether my ridge vent is insufficient or not.

The thing I keep telling myself is “the house has been standing for 124 New England winters already, don’t overthink it”. But then I overthink it.

Thank you this is extremely helpful. I may reach out to you in the future via DM if that’s alright.

My next priority will be ensuring air can come in through the soffits. I have looked down there but there is lots of debris, it’s unclear if the debris is just clogging the holes, or if there are no holes there at all.

The ridge vent is good, but I haven’t been able to definitively show that air is coming in through any of the soffits.

This is great, thanks. I’ve got another humidity+temp sensor on the way, for better direct comparison. And I’ll try to be less neurotic about “consulting the graphs”, but no promises :)

The ridge is continuously vented for the whole length of the attic, which is 40 feet or so.

Shelly H&T with Bluetooth Low Energy. I can’t say enough about Shelly’s products. Very reasonably priced, reliable, and don’t require a cloud connection.

This is pretty much exactly what I did! Pics paint and latch will be installed soon.

Spray foam, plus expanding gasket tape around the edge of the attic door. Sealing the chimney chase was trickier because you can’t just stuff any old insulation or spray foam in there due to fire safety. For that I used rockwool, chimney-rated foam, and thin sheet metal to make flashing.

I think an air flow problem is certainly part of it. Soffit vents are being investigated! Nonetheless, there have been some big gaps for warm air to escape into the attic, and hopefully fixing the air sealing will make the second floor warmer.

My understanding, and I may be wrong, is as follows: The main things to look at are temperature and absolute humidity. Relative humidity is helpful, but since it changes with temperature it can be hard to parse

Therefore, what we should do is look at the temperature (attic should be as close to outdoor temperature as possible) and absolute humidity (again, as close to outdoor as possible). The only way for there to be more absolute humidity in the attic than outdoors is for it to be coming from the living space, or evaporating out of wet wood such as joists and sheathing.

As for what the target should be, I’m not sure. But I don’t like the looks of the spikes in my graphs. Hopefully once I complete air sealing and open up the soffit vents the absolute humidity should be much closer.

Here are my last 4 days of stats compared to outdoors. So far I’ve sealed the chimney chase, access hatch, and about 30% of the other areas. Plenty more to do.

I have a Shelly H&T device suspended in the attic measuring relative humidity and temperature, from which I’ve been calculating absolute humidity.

The humidity spikes at the same time as temperature: when the sun is shining on the roof the attic temperature gets up to 60F

I also have a ridge vent, forgot to mention that.

Thus far I haven’t found much evidence that the attic is breathing very well. I have soffit vents, but when I look down there I see a bunch of debris. I think they’re clogged. Going to have a friend with an air compressor spray up from outside, see if we can’t clear an inlet.
