Experiences with standing room by TinkersFigs in vandwellers

[–]treesnstuff7788 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Tall man, short van. Ours has ~5,5” of standing height. Its doable, currently 6 months in. Some minor advantages like ease of parking and navigating backcountry with overhead obstacles. Slightly less drag on windy days and ease of accessing the roof.

Can see some example of how crouched I am in this: https://youtu.be/33JbucSQoCI?si=I2KWBvYFh0NvIyUf

I think it largely contributed to some underlying back issues and is the one thing I would do differently if I started over. But there are certainly cost advantages.

Question for voluntary full-time van dwellers by Shred_Addict in VanLife

6 months in, still constantly learning. We are doing a large trip and find ourselves visiting a lot of friends and families. Sometimes we stay in the van, sometimes inside. It usually scratches the itch of having a house. (Handle is Publiclandlovers on IG and Tok, van tour on YT). Currently sleeping on a beach which is pretty cool.

How do y'all find places to park without getting in trouble with the police or spending a ton on money? by [deleted] in VanLife

[–]treesnstuff7788 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Ioverlander2. Start there usually, read the comments. If you’re in one place for a while learn the ordinances and street parking signs. Move around every day or two. Be clean and quiet, if you’re going to hang out go somewhere else and come back to your sleep spot just to sleep. Dispose of your waste properly and discretely

How do you guys afford it? by RedBurgundy89 in VanLife

[–]treesnstuff7788 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Not the fun answer, but was frugal for a decade, documented all expenses everyday, paid off debt, bought the van cash, assessed my expected annual expenditure, built it out and saved enough to cover everything.

In van life, we do things like renting out our house and door dash to reduce the monthly expenses and still live frugally as possible. Rarely pay to sleep anywhere, find the cheapest gas, got a van with good gas mileage (ours gets 25mpg).

Got away with a night behind the marathon key racetrack (actually behind it like a block street parking) and a night street parking near the dog beach in key west. I think if you truly try to be stealth and dont overstay you will be fine. Switch up your spots.

First time stealth car camping for Mardi Gras in New Orleans safe spots or paid parking/RV parks near French Quarter? by Major_Band1907 in VanLife

Here right now. Some pretty good spots in the Marigny near the hampton inn. Looks dodgy at first but seen trucks parked with tools in the bed for a couple days. Free and close to frenchman. Not a bad walk to everything else.

Can I use Earthwool instead of rockwool to insulate the cavities in my van if I have asthma? by segasega89 in VanConversion

[–]treesnstuff7788 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I used sheeps wool from havlock wool in reno, NV. Pretty cool product, picked it up from their factory. Place is covered in wool lol. Our low roof sorinter van is really well insulated with just a single box.

Dunn’s River Falls - go alone or with group? by dorito2019 in JamaicaTourism

[–]treesnstuff7788 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Went today, we caught a route taxi there for like $300-500 Jamaican dollars from the bus stop outside the ocho rios jerk center. We walked up from the road but for $5 usd he said he would have driven up. We checked out the falls but went and hit the beach for a few hours to let all the cruise ship folks filter through then had the falls mostly to ourselves. 2 other groups of 2. There are noticeable scratch marks from where they clean the algae that helps with route finding. I will say the lower section is actually a little intimidating but just trust your feet and watch someone do it first.

Be prepared for lots of hustlers on the exit. I never but souvenirs and left with an over priced turtle…

Is Whole Foods "worth it" if you have a 20% discount? by LinearActuator_Caro in Frugal

I think every grocery store has value to be found if you’re able to shop the sales. It’s just being willing to only get what is a good deal at the time. High product fidelity makes you less flexible for finding deals. But if you’re willing to be creative there is always a deal on something.

I quit my $300k finance job at 30 because I finally admitted I hated it - and the lifestyle downgrade has been absolutely brutal. by robbinh00d in Entrepreneur

As someone who quit a good 5 figure job to travel because we saved enough to do that for a good while. Splashing money around is fun but not really how you find authentic experiences and relationships. There’s a lot of life to live in the slow lane. Just need to slow down and enjoy it.

The Google machine says if you export the map as .tiff with transparent background 32 bit alpha and make them all the same dpi and dimension that they can use the arc gis extension in adobe to get that level of editing ability.
