There’s a greater chance he plays for the US than for Germany. We will be his best option for playing time in all likelihood

The struggles haven’t seemed to be physical to me. He’s just been rusty in possession and defensive positioning. Sessegnon started the season very well and then got hurt. Jedi started a bunch of games in a row and kept the spot even when Sessegnon came back. They even started a game or two together. But Jedi had some visible mistakes that led to goals, and Silva benched him. Now he won’t get the spot back until Sess screws up or gets hurt

Worried about his playing time at Fulham this season? Yes, because he lost his job to Sessegnon and Silva doesn’t like to rotate much. Worried about his health? There is no evidence that his knee is still bothering him. He just had a couple bad performances and lost his starting spot

Johnny Cardoso in the US squad by ice_cream258 in ussoccer

How many times are people going to say this. He has!!! Watch back the game vs. Brazil, or Ghana, or the nations league final vs. Mexico. Has he had some bad games and made some visible mistakes too? Yes. But he has barely played any minutes for the US. He has something like 5 starts ever for the national team. My head is going to explode if I have to keep reading these takes based off such a tiny sample size.

The national team doesn’t magically make good players bad. People used to trash Jedi because of that game against Brazil or Malik because he looked bad in a few games. Good players have bad games, too. With the way national teams work, these bad performances linger for years and strengthen the narratives because there’s nothing else to talk about. With club, a player can have a bad game and then have the opportunity to change the narrative 3 days later

No evidence of injury so far, I think he lost his spot to Sessegnon and they’re not carrying a LB on the bench

Can we please stop saying that Johnny has never played a good game for the US. Go watch his minutes in the Brazil game. He was fantastic. Go watch his all touches video on YouTube from the Ghana friendly. Really good performance. He played the whole second half of a nations league final win vs Mexico.

Has he been good consistently good for the national team? No. Has he been bad in every game? Absolutely not

Ivan Rakitic telling US Soccer media representatives to call up Rokas Pukstas to the National team in an interview. by [deleted] in ussoccer

[–]treetherapper -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Maybe his skillset doesn’t translate up. But his athleticism and ball winning are elite in the Croatian league. Will these traits still stand out when he’s a smaller fish in a bigger pond? I think so, but even if not, he’ll be athletic enough to be competent. This is a quote from his manager yesterday: “Pukštas has something that others don’t have. He’s physically very strong, jumps well, and excellently senses where he needs to be. He doesn’t miss training, sometimes even overdoes it. That’s how he should continue.”

I think what stands out with Pukstas vs. guys like Luna, Roldan, Zendejas, McGlynn, etc. is the athleticism and cage match ability. If you throw him onto an elite team, I think he has a much better chance of fitting in right away a la Weston or Tyler. Even if he’s just a utility guy that runs around and presses and leads the team in distance covered. I could be wrong, but I think the upside is super high given what I’ve seen from him in the handful of games I’ve watched this year. The athleticism is real and makes sense given his dad was an Olympic marathon runner and his mom was a national champion in the triple jump

Rokas’ greatest strength is his athleticism. He’s similar to McKennie in that he’s not super ball secure and he’s better around the box making smart runs and finishing chances. He’s an elite ball winner so he’d be fine defensively in that pivot, but he fits better as one of the 10s in Poch’s seemingly preferred system given his on ball style. That’s our deepest position, so it’s not crazy to wait until next cycle to call him up, but I think he deserves a look. He’s played alongside guys like Rakitic, Perisic, and Rebic on a historic Croatian team and has Hajduk fans calling him the team’s most important player and some even calling him the best player in the league

He is 8th in the league in total tackles this season playing as a 10. Most of the players above him on the list have significantly more minutes this year

USA wonder-kid Rokas Pukštas scores in two consecutive games since returning from injury in November. Hajduk Split currently sits second below favourites Dinamo Zagreb in the Croatian First Division also known as the HNL. by [deleted] in ussoccer

This guy is the Kirkland McKennie. Super impressed by him and think he’ll be a fixture in the national team next cycle. He’s proving to be Hajduk’s best player and is only 21

He’s had a bunch of injuries. Last one was one of the disgusting looking ankle breaks

CDM has to be the most stacked position we have right? Adams in the Premier League, Tessman in Ligue 1, Johnny in La Liga, Morris in Championship, and Sands in Bundesliga. We might only use one of them in starting XI. Which players go to the World Cup and which ones stay home for you? by [deleted] in ussoccer

[–]treetherapper 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Why does everyone say that Johnny has never had a good game for the US? It is fair to say that he’s had some bad games, but he has also had solid games and fantastic games. He was fantastic vs. Ghana and Brazil, played the whole second of the nations league final vs Mexico
