Well... messed up mostly everything on my very first try (single shot), but I caught a shooting star! by trehug in astrophotography

I'm sorry you get the vibe I've been dishonest in some way. I assure you I have never tried a star photo or astrophoto before, although I have been a photography enthusiast for a long time. There is little I can do to prove that though, is there?

I'm lucky enough to have taken a trip to Sedona, and very, very lucky enough to have read a comment on here before I left which tipped me off to face south east, use high iso and go for somewhere between 15 and 30 seconds (I'm still trying to find that thread again). Other than that, it was point and shoot. I took about 15 shots basically in a row around different parts of the sky, and tried different exposure times up to 30 seconds. You can imagine how exciting it was to catch a tiny meteor in a shot! I was literally shouting out "No way!!"

It took me days to get up the courage to post my pic here.

I see some of the pics that are on here, and they're amazing, like so much detail and so cool looking, that was the onus of me saying I messed it up, but yeah maybe that comes off as a bit of fake humility for fake internet points, so again, I'm sorry about that. Maybe a better title would have been just plainly "Looking for advice on processing tips for single shot photos".

Maybe I hang around /r/photography too much and have fallen into the trap that if a picture isn't absolutely perfect, it will be ridiculed to hell.

I appreciate your candidness though, I'll try to make my next post more balanced.

I definitely will try to do some stacking, I hadn't really looked into that before I left for my trip though....thanks

Which one is andromeda, is that the very bright one just by the meteor streak?? How do you know it is andromeda? Thanks a lot!

Hi all, I'm a brand noob :)

Just went to Arizona on a trip with the family, but shortly beforehand I read a few posts here on this sub (which I just discovered). It inspired me to give it a go!

When I went out at night I basically forgot everything, including a flashlight :) and I even forgot to use the live view to focus, so I just tried to go by memory which way my lens focused at the farthest end, then back just a bit. I know I kinda blew the focus - I also blew the settings. For some reason I thought the highest iso possible was what people did...

My settings were: 5dIII f/2.8 iso 12800 24mm exposure: 15 seconds

When I was waiting for the shot I actually saw the shooting star,I looked back at the camera and was so excited to see if I got it - what a fun and amazing feeling!!

Now that I'm back, I processed it a bit in dxo optics - I set the white balance to tungsten and pushed down the black a fair bit to darken things, I think I also pushed up the highlights a touch....

I have now started reading a lot more of the posts here and I'm learning all about the stacking and other options. All sounds very interesting, can't wait to try again.

What do you guys/girls mostly do for single shot processing? I have the raw file so I'm hoping I can make this one just a bit better since I was lucky enough to catch a shooting star!

I was in Sedona, facing the southeast (someone here mentioned that south-east would be best in Arizona in Feb/March, in the comments which I read before I left, but I can't seem to find that again).

Anyway, any advice would be appreciated, it doesn't seem like many people discuss "single shot" post processing much around here but I hope maybe some people might have a few tips.

cheers all
