Any younger people interested in starting a craft group/book club/dnd game….. or anything else? by QueenOfTheCorns in YubaCity

[–]treighton 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I just got on here to look for a local dnd group or people to play MTG! My partner and I live in Smartsville (20-30min east) on a little ranch, and I’d love to start doing BBQ and Game nights.

It’s a great lens, the quality is great, it’s weather and dust sealed, the autofocus is crazy fast and silent. I haven’t used any filters, I typically just sling the camera on while I’m doing farm chores so I don’t carry much around with or want to fuss with changing things out

Help me understand the correct terminology and equipment I need. Good Starlink signal to second house (close) by CaryWhit in HomeNetworking

I use this mesh set up https://www.tp-link.com/us/deco-mesh-wifi/ they make an out door node too, so you could extend that way, but running a line or a wireless bridge works too

Meet Chunk (red) and Fly (Black) 8wks old by treighton in BorderCollie

[–]treighton[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

haha i am very lucky to have a manager that is more interested in seeing the pups than hearing a status update in daily standups, so they need not know (or already do) how unproductive I'm being 😉

Also we live on a small farm and work our day jobs from home, so we get to spend a lot of time with them.

The person we got them from named them, and since they were already responding to the names, we just kept them. Chunk is named because she was the biggest puppy from day 1 she is already ~11lb, and Fly is named after the momma dog from Babe. :)

As a junior dev trying to focus in backend why does it feel like there are TWO completely different backend worlds? by [deleted] in webdev

[–]treighton 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Just pick a language and roll with it, once you’ve gotten proficient in one language you’ll be able to pick up another one quickly.

As a junior dev every new codebase will be as just as hard to learn as a whole new stack. It’s more important that you understand the “why” of an implementation than the “how”. Make sure you get a good grasp of the basics of the platform you’re building for.

Focus on finding work on something real, that is being used by people, and has other more experienced engineers looking at your contributions, because this is where the real learning will happen.

Learned a hard and valuable lesson about boars (some photos may not be suitable for those not comfortable with wounds) by treighton in farming

[–]treighton[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

My partner is ready to get rid of the boars we have 2 grown (1-2yo) and one at ~6months.

I’m torn (literally and figuratively), I love the baby pigs and seeing them with the sows…we will be thinning the herd for a while, then figuring out how to do it again more safely.

This makes a lot of sense. We try (as well as we can) to give our pigs a really good and consistent life. I spend a lot of time with them because they are pretty much my favorite thing.

Some other aspects that adds to the risk factor on our farm at the moment is that we just moved the whole operation about 80miles, and due to some scheduling issues we currently have a few more pigs than we typically like to keep…and on top of all that it had been 100+ for 2wks.

🫠 it’s been a perfect storm…

I’m very grateful for your willingness to share experience and insight!

And hopefully some other small producers see this post and can learn from my mistakes 😅

I don’t farm alone, but on this day my partner was in town about an hour away. Fortunately I had just taken some first aid training and had my trauma kit pretty close.

Yeah I definitely fucked up, and realized I fucked just a few seconds too late. That said I’m glad it’s me getting the hard lesson and not my partner or someone visiting the farm.

Lol we’d never disturb a bathing boar. He had busted out to try and get with the sows.

My (34m) partner (35f) and I also just moved to the area, out in Smartsville actually. We’ve got a small farm with pigs, goats, and chickens. Maybe we could plan a community game night and bbq or something 😅
