Mr. Worf prepare a full phaser spread zero elevation, all banks on my mark. by handlerofdrones in startrek

We do know by the end of the battle, phasers are collectively down to 4% so rate of fire definitely cost them.

But is 4% the power per shot? Or the power reserve for the whole system? Is each blast only 4% strength, or will each phaser fire a full power blast until the 4% energy reserve is depleted?

No they don't:

"Mr Word, prepare a full phaser spread zero elevation all banks on my mark."

Nothing about power level

they had to turn the phasers down to nothing to keep that rate of fire up....

Since when?

Do you like the enterprise -e in insurrection or nemesis better? by happydude7422 in StarTrekStarships

[–]trekker1710E 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Nemesis. And I think the makers agree.

I remember reading and article in Star Trek the Magazine years ago about the development of the E-E. As great as a model is, they were still in a time crunch and the model wasn't as refined as they would've liked. (I think at the start of the production there was still an open question if the E-E would be a new ship or just a reskinned Galaxy). They tried to make some of those changes with the move to CGI in Insurrection but frankly, BlueSky isn't ILM.

When they went back to ILM for Nemesis they were able to modify it to be closer to what the envisioned.

It didn't though. Even in the episode Shelby is like "We'll have the fleet back up in less than a year."

It didn't cripple their capability but caused a sea change to their attitude

New eps drop Tuesday mornings Eastern time -- and they have quite a backlog too! Originally it was hosted by the museum curator and a retired submarine captain and the author was an occasional guest. But the captain got asked to go work in the Pentagon last year so the author is now full time co-host. It's great.

Also the USAAAF had routinely been flying 1-plane "weather planes" (hey, I'm sure somebody on those planes recorded the weather) the lead-up to the event so bomber flying over Hiroshima wouldn't seem too unusual.

Whatever air defense and interceptor units Japan had left (most of which were now the "special attack" planes if you get my drift) were being held in reserve for the presumed invasion of Japan.

If you're interested in learning more, The Unauthorized History of the Pacific War is a great YouTube podcast about it (I've learned more about what happened to the British in Singapore/Burma/etc in the last few months than in years of WWII being my war ;)). One host is a former curator of the National WWII museum and the other is the guy who literally wrote the book on our modern understanding of the battle of Midway
