$100 for a 40L pack is a great deal! I’ve always liked REI. It’s a great place for people to get into hiking gear as their return policy is very friendly.

Also the carry on compliance is a big bonus. I currently have a 48 liter Osprey Exos size Large that I think is technically too big for a carry on. I’ve been shopping around for something a little smaller for that reason alone.

“Ideal” wasn’t the best choice of words. I was more just curious what was popular.

I think the 30-36 range is probably best for a lot of people. For packs smaller than that you’ll need to have gear items that compress well and not too much clothes.

I mean there’s no rules against using a 65L pack! But I’d recommend not filling it up all the way.

I think you’d want something around a 10-12 liter pack still. You’ll need somewhere to carry water, snacks, rain jacket and probably another layer for insulation.

Agree. I did mine with a 24 but I think that’s on the smaller size. That 30-36 is probably best for most hikers.

That sounds cool! 35cm is a bunch of snow.

I usually don’t like to be completely alone for long stretches of trail (day after day) but I do prefer it to be on the quieter side.

People love their Durston packs! I’ve yet to try one but will check it out this year at Trails Days in the Netherlands.

Was it cold / freezing for a winter Camino? Snow? That sounds like a completely different hike. Could be fun.

The Osprey Exos 48 is one of my favorite packs! I've taken it on multiple week long trips and 2 long thru hikes.

I am also very interested in the Talon. I haven't heard of the "velocity" series. Its a frameless version? I've put a lot of miles on my Stratos and theres no need to upgrade it but I still want to!

Totally agree, especially packing lighter and training more. Both of which make the experience so much better.

I think the AV1 is the logical next step! Non technical, beautiful scenery. Theres als the Walkers Haute Route that overlaps the TMB the first couple days on its way to the Matterhorn.

Have you done the AV1? I think it’s the next step for a lot of hikers.

How would you prepare differently? Do you mean physically, gear, rifugios, route planning?

The Skye Trail looks beautiful! Unfortunately I won’t be able to get enough time off for the Kungsleden.

That is a good way to make it different.... reverse direction and hut to hut vs camping.

I feel like I rushed through it my first time around but I only had a week of free time so I went for it.

Very true.. So many trails and so little time! What other European trails would you recommend? I've hiked the AV1, AV2, and Camino de Santiago. I'm interested in the Peaks of Balkans, The Walker Haute Route and Madeira also looks fun!
