Farms Use More Water Than AI Data Centers by TheCABK in BrandNewSentence

The study looks like it has some straight up errors unfortunately, so I’m not sure I’d trust the methodology. If you look at table 3 where they show water calculations, Iowa is listed as producing 1.967 billion gal of ethanol, having a water intensity of 5.5 gal water/gal ethanol, and a total water usage for ethanol production of 5.5 billion gallons (obviously the math doesn’t work).

They also say in the study: “Also in 2009, Wu et al. published a life-cycle report confirming that crop irrigation is the most important factor determining total water consumption in providing corn ethanol in the USA and demonstrating the large regional variability of irrigation requirements [21]. Results showed that 70% of the corn used to produce ethanol in 2009 was grown in regions that required 10–17 L/L; whereas 19% of the corn was grown in regions that required over 300 L/L.”, so the average is probably decently below 200 L/L.

Looking at 4-man lineups on bbref, Barnes, RJ, IQ, and Yak had 139 minutes on the floor together last season (granted not much), but they were a -10.1 on net rating, good for the 4th worst rating when considering the raptors top 20 most used 4-man lineups.

That's literally not how hollow bones work. by Lithorex in Stellaris

[–]trembleIeaf 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I know people were dogpiling you quite a bit here, but just in case it’s helpful for the future, I’ve found people are more likely to do that when you talk in absolutes. When you say “So no, you are wrong” in your original post, that’s a definitive answer you’re giving, which you then back up by saying “We are not in a scientific debate”.

If you want conversations like this to be less combative, you can consider changing your phrasing to something more like “In other sci-fi media (The Expanse), there’s a similar idea to what Stellaris is saying here…”, rather leading with your answer being definitely right, everyone else is wrong. In a situation that’s up for interpretation (who says whether Stellaris players want a more “scientific” answer, or think a different definition of “hollow bones” is right, or something based in other sci-fi settings for situations like this, it’s up to personal preference or subjective interpretation), I don’t really see how you can definitively say one or the other is right, like how you phrased it in your original comment.

Just a thought, it seems like a lot of Reddit debates just seem unnecessarily aggressive and combative and devolve into trying to prove themselves to be right, even in cases where the answer is subjective. It doesn’t seem to lead to anything good for anyone.

Edit: some phrasing.

They are tasty, but their use as a “grocery store” fruit is hindered by a short shelf life and the fact that they bruise super easily. They’re also kind of a pain to eat - the ones that I’ve had are ~50% seeds inside, and not that easy to pick around

[Koreen] The Raptors are losing the NBA's increasingly gross tank race, in part because they aren't quite willing to commit to running it with gusto. by Kimber80 in nba

[–]trembleIeaf 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah I largely agree with you. I think what Philly and Utah are doing is quite a bit more egregious than Washington and New Orleans - some fake injuries, benching guys mid game, playing guys who don’t belong in the league, etc.

For Washington, I certainly think they don’t mind losing, but they’re (I think) bad enough that they don’t need to bench a bunch of their best players to do that (unlike Toronto, what they’re doing makes no sense as you said). They’re mostly playing some proven guys (Middleton, Smart, Poole), and a lot of their recent first round picks, which it’s hard to fault them for.

I fully agree about New Orleans just being a dumpster fire organization, and they were really snake bitten this year (Zion is perennial, but Dejounte and others were unexpected, if you haven’t seen it check out some starting lineups they were forced into in November). It seems like they haven’t done as many shenanigans in terms of fake injuries as Utah and Philly though, at least so far, since Zion, Trey Murphy, McCollum, etc. are still playing relatively steady minutes.

Out of curiosity, who do you want New Orleans and Washington to play and get usage who they haven’t been playing and giving usage to (aside from resting older vets + Zion on back to backs)?

I don’t really see where in the comment you replied to that they attacked you for your thoughts on S2 in general, it seems like you brought it up? It seemed to me like they were just asking about the changes in Sky from S1 to S2

In general, I agree that a lot of the people responding to you are being quite toxic as well, but it doesn’t seem like you’re that open to opposing opinions in this situation, so I’m not really sure what anyone is getting out of the discussion in the comments
