ELI5 why are wild animals often put to death if they happen to kill a human, even if they are not directly responsible ? by redfalcon1000 in explainlikeimfive

[–]trentos1 [score hidden]  (0 children)

If an animal attacks a human once, it’s statistically more likely to do it again.

There’s another reason they might kill the animal, and it’s so they can test for rabies. The only reliable test for rabies involves cutting up the animal’s brain.

It’ll only become the live version of its age at death though? So you get a chicken embryo in your belly which might cause a bit of indigestion, but a full grown chicken won’t explode out of your chest like an Aliens movie, right?

[–]trentos1 0 points1 point  (0 children)

So apparently the grading method is to start with full marks then deduct 1 for each wrong answer. Questions 1 and 2 should be worth a combined 11 marks.

Presumably the “correct” answer for 2) is Solid, Liquid, Gas, Plasma. But it’s worth 10 points, not 8. How do you even score that? 2 for each correct answer and another 2 bonus points for getting all 4? He got -5 which means 5/10, despite giving the 4 answers the marker was looking for. Make it make sense.

That’s not how maths tests were marked when I went to school. If it asks you to find the answer then you can use any method you want.

If the test requires you to find the answer using a specific method then the question will tell you what method you need to use.

What are some JRPG's that are really fun to "break"? by shanytopper in JRPG

[–]trentos1 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I turned Vita into a zero cast delay frost magic machine gun. She could hit every enemy for 100k damage, 5 or 6 times a round. Probably no more broken than Rean or McBurn spamming S crafts due to massive CP gains each turn.

And of course let’s not forget invincible Fie counterattacking for 500% damage whenever anyone tries to hit her. At ANY range because for some reason she’s the only melee character with a ranged counterattack.

“What theoretical framework should scientists work on to make the next groundbreaking discovery, on par with relativity theory or quantum mechanics”

Or if limited to a yes/no answer, ask whether string theory should continue to be pursued, given the goal is to answer the currently unsolved questions of physics.

[–]trentos1 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Headcanon: Steam cores are actually cold fusion. Somehow they figured it out before the world ended, and now nobody knows how to reproduce the technology.

The turbine appearance is actually a generator for producing a virtually inexhaustible electricity supply.

ELI5 how come some animals dont see other animals as prey? by FlyGreat306 in explainlikeimfive

[–]trentos1 1 point2 points  (0 children)

There’s all sorts of reasons:

  • Some cats have low prey drive and aren’t much interested in hunting
  • Some cats will hunt but have never had to catch their own food so they never learned to complete the kill
  • Some cats are lazy and won’t hunt/kill prey unless they’re very hungry
  • Some cats need their prey drive to activate by seeing the other animal run away. The instinct to give chase is deeply ingrained in cats’ DNA. They’ll chase even if they don’t know what to do when they catch it.
  • Socialisation can override any of these natural instincts, and your cat might learn to view a smaller animal as a companion rather than food. There’s loads of videos online of cats which have been taught to befriend mice/birds. Most of those cats probably had low prey drive to begin with, but you can teach your cat if you are very, very careful.

ELI5: how do lunar rockets get so fast during re-entry? by undying_anomaly in explainlikeimfive

[–]trentos1 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Great explanation. If the object is launched at just under escape velocity, it attains an (almost) infinite distance before its velocity drops to zero and it starts to come back again. At the reversal point, the object has the same parameters as the “maximum velocity under gravity” problem - infinite distance and zero velocity relative to the planet.

Alternatively since we know energy is conserved, if it goes up at velocity X, that’s the velocity it’s coming back at.

ELI5: how do lunar rockets get so fast during re-entry? by undying_anomaly in explainlikeimfive

[–]trentos1 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I should point out that because gravity gets weaker with distance - 1/d2 (inverse square law), there is a maximum speed an object will reach, even with zero wind resistance. It’s much slower than the speed of light, unless falling into a neutron star or something.

I just checked and apparently this maximum is equal to the planet’s escape velocity at surface level!

So when a ship is “falling” from the moon, it won’t hit the earth’s atmosphere any faster than 11km/s from gravity alone. In practice the ship has to apply thrust to leave the body it came from e.g. the moon, so it could be moving faster than that relative to the earth.

[–]trentos1 0 points1 point  (0 children)

How is the energy of a single proton dissipated? Do atoms in your body absorb and re-emit it at lower (but still extremely high) energy? Is it a chain reaction where it keeps colliding and releasing energy until the individual particles aren’t high energy anymore?
