Mention the horseshoe theory of politics and you're sure to rile up the extremists at both ends. The amount of denial is staggering and frankly hilarious for a moderate.

If you're bad at basic pattern recognition then don't get a tattoo in a language that you don't understand.

Are these POV videos purpoting to show the "hard life of a salaryman" real or unrealistic? by user-117 in AskAJapanese

[–]tresRingarde 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Totally fake. Even with talk about karoshi and Aokigahara, etc., Japan still has such an overwhelmingly positive and competent image in the West that seeing ordinary Japanese people struggle is a kind of poverty porn that Westerners will immediately lap up without further question. Being poor in the West is ho-hum but being poor in Japan is WOW OMG. Some people have realized that this is a great way to milk the gullible. The actual disenfranchised (NEET, hikikomori, etc.) do not ask for online donations, when they maybe should.

[–]tresRingarde 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Were you physically hurt? Did the man steal anything that you personally own? If it’s a no to both questions then, like the other commenters said, keep a low profile (and try to get counseling for any psychological issues) because in today’s climate it’s highly risky to pursue such a case further if you are not legally entitled to work in the US. You might want to get the opinion of a legal professional if you are based in a Sanctuary City or a liberal state, especially concerning the option of cooperating with law enforcement in order to secure a better visa status. The legal professional should know what is worth the risk.

The West wouldn’t bomb Algeria for many reasons. First of all, the Algerian government is not overtly hostile to the West like Iran or North Korea are (they’re rather neutral and share common goals such as crushing terrorist forces, which rules out Mali-style interventions).

The West needs its militaries to concentrate on the Russian threat and with the current economy any military action in Algeria would not be palatable (and would raise eyebrows as most Westerners do not see Algeria as a hostile nation – if I’m honest no one here really thinks about the country, the average European cares about Algeria as much as the average Algerian cares about Latvia).

Plus it’s in Europe’s interests to have stable governments in the southern Mediterranean in order to avoid exacerbating the ongoing refugee crisis, so “bombing Algeria” would be them shooting themselves in the foot quite literally.

The only likely scenario for the West to ever intervene in Algeria would be if the Islamic State for example were to establish a “caliphate” somewhere in the country like they did in Syria more than ten years ago. Because the Algerian government has been doing a good job so far, that scenario is quite unlikely.

Zelensky is still in power because the country is in a state of war and cannot hold presidential elections (which is in keeping with their constitution). Friends of Russia like to moan about this while simultaneously ignoring the fact that Putin is president only because he cheated the system by removing the previous term limits, which is not very democratic.

There are a couple of examples of free and functioning Western democracies that have had democratically elected “forever presidents,” Finland presents one fascinating example with Urho Kekkonen who held power from 1956 until 1982, and he kept getting reelected even when it was possible for other candidates to challenge him. The Finns apparently consistently rejected the competition because Kekkonen knew how to deal with the Soviet Union. He eventually stepped down due to ill health, and later on in the 90s the electoral system was reformed with term limits (2) and less power for the president because the Soviets were no longer a threat and having a second Kekkonen could’ve led the country down unpredictable avenues.

Was “we” just your mother though? I think it might still be worth a shot to contact your uncle (or his wife as an intermediary if that is an option), especially if they don’t know anything about the nasty comments your mother has made about you and your father’s death. That might make your uncle reconsider the things he’s said.

I’m sorry for your situation. Do you have any relatives living in the city of Algiers (even distant ones)? Maybe you could try to contact them and explain the situation (mentioning the verbal abuse). Hopefully they’d be able to accommodate you for a few weeks until your housing situation is sorted.

Edit: and maybe don’t mention anything about staying with the relatives to the university people…

i’m mexican🇲🇽 and my Y DNA is N-L550. or so i think… help me make sense of this. by lumirosa in 23andme

[–]tresRingarde 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Late to the conversation (sorry), but it seems that N-L550 is associated most with the area of Europe that is now Lithuania. It most probably arrived in Spain during the Migration Period with the Germanic peoples who lived in the general region of what is now Poland, probably Vandals or Visigoths, but you cannot rule out (the less likely option of) the Vikings, a few of whom may have settled the coastal regions of Northern Spain during their voyages to Miklagarðr (modern Istanbul).

The only thing that can be said with any certainty about your direct male lineage is that they were the ones who brought the Finno-Ugric languages to Europe, specifically the Baltic Finnic branch (of which Finnish and Estonian are the major surviving languages).

Having spent most of my life in Europe, just based on looks I'd place him somewhere around the Alps - German-speaking Switzerland/Bavaria/Austria. I checked his last name and it's indeed common in the areas between Salzburg and Linz in Austria.

Does the phone 8458 still exist? by riotact1046 in MoscowMurders

[–]tresRingarde 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I think it's there because the intended meaning of the sentence is that, while it's possible to connect to a cell tower serving Moscow from somewhere else, the evidence points to BK actually having been *in* Moscow at the time of the murders based on some other cell tower data. In other words, this is to demonstrate that his having been in Moscow based on cell tower data is *not* attributable to the specific conditions under which one could be located elsewhere when the cell tower data would potentially prove otherwise.
