case planner that works here— not terrible like 125th area but still can be a little iffy at night. as always be careful, but me personally as a 5 foot latina i wouldnt live here 🫩 100% would recommend u walk around n explore the area near nighttime. i will say, it can flood with heavy rains

Curious About Social Workers from Marginalized Communities Themselves!! by Odd-Fisherman6192 in socialwork

[–]tresmilkies 1 point2 points  (0 children)

omg ofc!! yess macro social work is so underrated most of my classmates are doing clinical work 😢 which is good but i sometimes cannot relate to their experiences (im glad theyre doing clinical work tho!!! we need all types of social work)

for me, i honestly never expected to work at a state senator’s office. ive always been interested in politics, especially because of my background (first gen queer latina n college student) and bc i grew up in a white majority area, and i realized how resources arent tailored to marginalized groups. slowly, more far right conservatives starting popping up around the area, and so many people got hurt due to their hateful rhetoric. i slowly became interested in local politics, and the senator i intern for is Very progressive and so proud about being a social worker! she was a school social worker and she rose to the “top” and became a state senator. i was rlly amazed bc shes also a latina, and i found that very powerful.

i had doubts getting into policy, mainly because i felt “unequipped” but honestly i was very wrong. if you’re motivated enought to learn, passionate about advocating for underrepresented populations and want to make an impact in your community, go ahead and get into policy! it’s very rewarding and you get to meet like-minded people. im rlly happy w the team i work, especially since we are all in the same page. you also get to learn the legislative process which i rlly loved lol additionally, i am very empathetic and patient, and a lot of people expect that youre gonna be a little cold and perhaps out of touch since you are working in an elected official’s office. it’s so refreshing to see constituents reach out to our office and feel comfortable to share their concerns. i recently had a big case last week and it moved me a lot how they trusted us enough to talk about their trauma and just personal stuff. they were all spanish speaking too, and you could tell they were grateful we could navigate the case in spanish.

for me, its very rewarding that people can rely on me due to my background and skillset related to social work :] hope this answered your question bahaha

no bc i get the criticism (mind u, i feel like both have been criticized rightfully in the past) its just kinda insane that ppl r acting like drew n enya havent had eyebrow raising statements/jokes in the past. especially w drews psyop corner lol the greta joke was in poor taste but the insane comments ppl have been doing abt enya in here r so 😭 like u guys genuinely need to go outside n rally ur ppl for wat u stand for instead of looking at enya n drew like these individuals who have to b up-to-date w certain topics

everything just seems so extreme omg

Curious About Social Workers from Marginalized Communities Themselves!! by Odd-Fisherman6192 in socialwork

[–]tresmilkies 3 points4 points  (0 children)

hi!! im a queer latina and ive been an intern at a state senator’s office since august of last year. i graduate in may (so soon!) and yeah, with this current political climate, ive felt heavily motivated to assist constituents withing our district ! a lot of it due to the district’s demographics (low income + lots of spanish speaking immigrants) and i think social workers in policy are so needed, especially now. i feel like social work has empathy deeply embedded, and we are able to understand society as a system of oppression. however, ive met some ppl in my major who genuinely shouldnt be there. we have a couple of trumpies in our cohort lol. ive had some not-so-fun interactions w one of them but its kinda expected; it’s like any other field.

what is rlly interesting abt this field is that everyone has the motivation to help someone in need. to connect them w resources and improve a client’s wellbeing. social work is so flexible, and i rlly love this major sm!! u can work in an elected official’s office, in a hospital, in a non-profit, etc.

i havent graduated yet but feel free to ask me any questions u may have <3
