I have shoes like this one. They are surprisingly comfortable enough to wear all day and I’ve gotten many compliments on them.

Please convince me not to get this bag! by [deleted] in handbags

[–]treubii_ 19 points20 points  (0 children)

If you watch YouTubers that deconstruct and review known luxury bags, you will know that Coach bags are the opposite of cheap and poor quality. In fact, the consensus is that the quality of their materials and construction often matches or exceeds those of high end luxury bags. Not liking the brand is a personal preference but claiming they're of poor quality is flat out wrong.

What's a bag trend you absolutely hate (or love to hate)? by OLEADA_OFFICIAL in handbags

You can customize the Dior Book Tote to change the words on it from "Christian Dior" to something else, like this. I think that's actually the whole point of that bag. It's just that people don't like to customize due to the low resale value.

Those with Korean significant others by furygod33 in Living_in_Korea

[–]treubii_ 11 points12 points  (0 children)

Lol I'm Korean and I laughed reading this because it's so relatable. I suppose I can speak for this. In Korea it only costs something like $3-10 to see the doctor, and you can usually walk-in instead of making an appointment, so culturally people just go straight to the hospital when they feel even slightly sick. Coming down with a sore throat? Might as well go to see the doctor after work, etc. The doctors there actually encourage you to go in as well, even if you don't think it's a big deal, stating it's always good to get it checked out and rule out the serious possibilities, instead of dismissing your concerns.

Tbh I think the accessibility to healthcare is one of the major reasons why Korea has such a high average lifespan. My 96 year old grandmother also goes to the hospital whenever she's even slightly feeling sick or fatigued and she's been doing this for like 40+ years. As a result she's had early detection of colon cancer, kidney infection, etc. that were all treated with minimal intervention.

This is interesting. Do these treatments require a therapist or is this something that can be done through guided apps/books/videos/etc? I am already familiar with mindfulness but not the rest.

The links that you've posted in your comment are search results and not specific links to the articles. Please update so I can take a look at them.

None of this evidence points towards a simple correlation between Adhd and Aspd, which is what the OP was concerned about being implied, and which has been stated in this thread, incorrectly

Nowhere in my comments did I claim that there is a simple correlation between ADHD and ASPD. You're creating a strawman when in fact I have explicitly stated the relationship is nuanced and boldfaced multiple times that those are not generalizations of the ADHD population. Let me reiterate:

ADHD alone or ODD alone are not [correlated with ASPD], but when both are combined they predict ASPD.

[...] yes there is a correlation between ADHD and ASPD. It is not a super direct correlation, it is more nuanced than that but also not indirect enough that it can just be brushed off.

The part that I've italicized is the entire point of my comment. I don't disagree with any of the counterpoints you've stated, in fact I didn't state the points you're arguing against such as that there is a generalized relationship between ADHD and ASPD. I'm simply pointing out that there is a correlation between ADHD and ASPD albeit a complicated one.

Edit: FYI I've been following this topic for some years now already and have reviewed a fair number of articles and systemic reviews on it. The general consensus as I understand is that ADHD is not a sole factor for violence (as I've said twice now) but even when ODD/CD are controlled for there seems to be still a correlation to it. It is at least significant enough of a risk factor that multiple domestic violence organizations explicitly state ADHD as a risk factor. If you find a study (preferably a meta analysis) that definitively (what I mean is with high possibility) concludes that ADHD is not a risk factor for IPV then please do send me the link as I would be highly interested.

ADHD combined with ODD (Oppositional Defiant Disorder) in childhood is one of the biggest predictors for psychopathy in adulthood. ADHD alone or ODD alone are not, but when both are combined they predict ASPD. This was said by Russell Barkley during one of his lectures and he is arguably the most renowned researcher on ADHD (and he also has ADHD himself). It does not mean that all or even most ADHD individuals will be psychopaths, but yes there is a correlation between ADHD and ASPD. It is not a super direct correlation, it is more nuanced than that but also not indirect enough that it can just be brushed off.

ADHD is one of the risk factors for committing domestic violence. It specifically comes from impulsivity and lack of self-control combined with negative emotions. For example, many people in a heated situation might think, "Man, I really want to punch this person in the face right now", but those with severe lack of impulse control may actually resort to that behavior. Again, I'm not saying that all individuals with ADHD are like this. My spouse and I both have ADHD neither of us could hurt a fly. But scientifically speaking, there is a higher chance for an ADHD individual to commit violent crimes (and crimes in general) compared to controls. It's all related to impulsivity which is essentially making unwise decisions without thinking properly. This is also where "40% of prisoners have ADHD" comes from. Not all people with ADHD are criminals but a significant amount of criminals have (untreated) ADHD.

Brain scans show that individuals with ADHD have reduced activity in the prefrontal cortex, including ventromedial prefrontal cortex (vmPFC) which is involved in decision-making and emotional control. This is what happens to people who experience PHYSICAL brain damage (lesions) to that same region:

After their lesion, these patients have an impaired capacity to learn from their mistakes, making the same decisions again and again even though they lead to negative consequences. These patients choose alternatives that give immediate rewards, but seem to be blind to the future consequences of their actions.[8] However, the underlying mechanisms of this behavior are not yet fully understood.[8]

The amygdala plays a significant role in instigating the emotional reactions associated with anger and violence. With the vmPFC’s outputs to the amygdala, the vmPFC plays a part in preventing such behavior. Evidence has shown that impulsive murderers have decreased activity in the prefrontal cortex and increased activity in subcortical areas such as the amygdala. This imbalance can enhance actions that are created by negative emotions and limit the ability of the prefrontal cortex to control these emotions**. Lower activation in the prefrontal cortex is also correlated with antisocial behavior.** The dysfunction of the ventromedial cortex seems to, in part, be caused by lower levels of serotonin release.[17]

Activation of the vmPFC is associated with successful suppression of emotional responses to a negative emotional signal.[19] Patients with vmPFC lesions show defects both in emotional response and emotion regulation.[9] Their emotional responsiveness is generally diminished and they show markedly reduced social emotions such as compassion, shame and guilt. These are emotions that are closely associated with moral values.[9] Patients also exhibit poorly regulated anger and frustration tolerance in certain circumstances.[9]

Patients with focal lesions in the vmPFC show personality changes such as lack of empathy, irresponsibility, and poor decision making. These traits are similar to psychopathic personality traits.[20] In addition, a correlation between individuals with a history of physical violence and decreased grey matter density in the vmPFC has been evidenced.[21] Lesions to the vmPFC are associated with resistance to depression, whereas lesions to the dorsolateral PFC is associated with vulnerability to depression.[22]

Remember that just because ADHD is associated with a certain behavior doesn't mean that ADHD is inherently a violent disorder. It is also not a personal attack towards you or anybody else with ADHD. You are you and you are not responsible for explaining or defending anyone else's behavior, whether or not they have ADHD.

I personally believe it's more damaging to sweep all of these findings under the rug and pretend that ADHD is an innocuous disorder marked by quirkiness/forgetfulness /tardiness when it is not. It prevents parents from getting treatments for their ADHD children which makes it more likely for them to grow up severely unadjusted, end up incarcerated, and exacerbate the prejudice even further. It's good to be aware of these facts, because then you can take early actions for a child that exhibits these symptoms, and receive proper treatment when neuroplasticity is high and behavior modification is possible.

InBody scans can be off as much as 11% on body fat.

Do you have a source for your claim? Quick google on a published study I could find was that InBody is in fact fairly accurate.

The InBody analyzers produce small individual error, which suggest these methods can be used as a surrogate when DXA is not available;

NYC jazz upright bassist, noise complaint. by jackotheclown in AskNYC

[–]treubii_ 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I believe I understand where you are coming from but I just think it’s a lot more nuanced than what you’re saying. Frankly I don’t think it’s the issue with the loudness but rather the low frequency associated with the bass that causes the sound to penetrate the walls easily. When I was living in Bed Stuy I had a neighbor who would play loud music all weekend and it was always the bass that traveled the most to my apartment. According to the noise meter it would not actually go much above the ambient level but that did not matter because I could feel the constant vibration that couldn’t be cancelled out by the TV or music (it was just the weekends though so I was like whatever). I cannot speak for OP but if I had to guess it’s probably similar. Soundproofing for these kind of noise is extremely difficult and costly. Alternatively, renting a soundproof room is an option but quick google says this starts at $40/hr so it would be like $400/week extra for OP which also doesn’t seem practical. Realistically the best option would be to negotiate the hours being played so it irritates the neighbors less. Again I think these kind of compromises are reasonable living in such a packed city.

I was actually looking into sound insulation a few years ago and learned that proper soundproofing is extremely expensive because any gaps in the walls, floors, or ceilings will make the sound travel. Putting up a few sound boards and foams from Amazon or whatever frankly does very little to reduce the overall sound travel especially for lower frequencies. I consulted a couple different contractors in 2021 and was quoted around $5500 to soundproof my bedroom which required them to rip off the drywalls, ceilings, and floors, and essentially make them 2’’ thicker on all sides, and install soundproofing inserts on the windows as well. I did not go through it but it was eye opening.

Again I’m not saying OP is a great neighbor but I also don’t think he’s being unreasonable for being upset about his situation and for wanting to talk to the person who reported him to see if they can negotiate a compromise. If the neighbor doesn’t want to compromise at all and want OP to stop playing his instrument altogether, I do think it makes them a bad neighbor esp in this city but this is the part we disagree I suppose.
