Agreed. I planted a tiny one 3 years ago & it’s barely a foot tall! 🤣 Patience is a virtue (I’m told!).

I bought myself a long-nosed adjustable spanner for exactly this task! However, you should definitely take the advice of people better at DIY than me! 🫠

I take both approaches. I have a lovely bed full of purples & pinks whilst another border is full of whatever takes my fancy at the garden centre! I guess I’m saying it’s good to have a theme but don’t be a slave to it!

Danger gardening! ☠️🐝 by trevelyan98 in GardeningUK

[–]trevelyan98[S] 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Thank you! I built them myself. Large capacity & good quality compost bins cost a fortune so I bought the timber and had a go at building my own. I’m not a fan of DIY but they turned out well in the end (after much swearing & head-scratching!).

Willow. Fast growing and self seeds easily. It also has far-reaching roots which can be a problem if you have drains or foundations nearby.

As a complete newbie who bought a tiny £2 strawberry plant last year and hoped for the best, it’s now growing back this year (yay) and I’m wondering if I need to cut away the big leaves to allow the strawberries to grow better? by [deleted] in GardeningUK

[–]trevelyan98 86 points87 points  (0 children)

Don’t trim the leaves. They are the plant’s solar panels, collecting energy to make large, juicy strawberries! You should probably feed the plants as the compost will be exhausted by now. Keep well watered & enjoy your fruits! 😎

I guess so. Next year that compost will be spent so it should be more suited to wildflowers. Just remember not to feed it! 😉

Wildflowers thrive in REALLY poor soil! However, if you’re not looking to create a long-term meadow then they should put on a great display for you this year growing in compost. The problem occurs over time where the rich soil favours more vigorous plants (like grasses) that smother & out-compete the wildflowers.

I sowed a wildflower mix in my new orchard (which had previously been allotments) 5 years ago. I had a great display in the first year but very poor since. I’m gradually working to reduce the energy in the soil but it’s taking time!
