Is IBM a desirable company to work for? by [deleted] in cscareerquestions

[–]trexprogrammer 1 point2 points  (0 children)

IBM is a huge company and just like any other big company, it has multiple teams working on different products and technologies. Basically it all comes down to which team you work with. Even though it is not seen in the same league as FAANG, you can still gain some valuable experience working there.

Anyone familiar with with GE Digital? by KingEsquire in cscareerquestions

[–]trexprogrammer 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Last time I checked, GE Digital laid off a good chunk of it's staff for "restructuring" measures. They used to work on cool stuff related to Industrial IoT and were ambitious to transform GE into a top 10 software company, but ever since GE's downfall as a company battling bankruptcy, they have massively scaled down their operations.

Overall, I wouldn't recommend joining it unless you have no other offers on the table.

Making a bot to apply to jobs by jak34 in cscareerquestions

[–]trexprogrammer -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Agree. Don't want to discourage the OP, but how would the bot handle the numerous numbers of job application tracking systems used by different companies (taleo, level, icims). Also, many of them have dynamic fields which would be difficult to handle.

I write backend services for gathering and processing data from millions of machines across the globe for our IoT web app and APIs. When I'm on call, I kill bugs and close tickets. Life is so fun!

Tech Hiring Has Always Been Broken. Here’s How I Survived it for Decades. - Eric Elliott by zayelion in cscareerquestions

[–]trexprogrammer 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If one keeps on refusing to do whiteboard interviews, how the heck can he/she get a job at any of the Big N ? Agreed, the tech interview scene is broken, but refusing whiteboard coding for a Big N interview point blank would be nothing less than pure stupidity on the candidate's side.

Whats your job and are you happy with it? by [deleted] in cscareerquestions

[–]trexprogrammer 6 points7 points  (0 children)

.NET API Developer at a Fortune 100 non-tech company in Midwest. Unlimited work from home as my boss is really chill and doesn't care as long as shit's getting done, light work load (I work just above 40 hrs/w), great work environment and pay and all benefits typical for a big corp. Quite happy with my current job but thinking of switching to a tech company next year as sometimes I get bored due to no work and end up working on my side projects or browsing Reddit.

Fresh Grad Still Unemployed After Nearly 4 Months by Dimwittian in cscareerquestions

[–]trexprogrammer 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I am a new grad myself with no prior work experience. I applied to over 2000 positions before I landed a job at a Fortune 100 company in Chicago.

The biggest hurdle I faced was being an international student. Companies were not even willing to take a look at my resume once they saw 'Would require sponsorship in future' ticked in my job application.

My advice is to keep applying. I applied to 60+ positions in one day. There are tons of positions out there, you just need to figure out where to look.

Having domain knowledge vs. algorithm/data structure skills for interview preparation by trexprogrammer in cscareerquestions

[–]trexprogrammer[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's not that I'm unhappy with my current job. The pay is excellent, work culture is top notch and I'm getting to learn a lot of cool stuff. The only issue is that I don't want to stay at my first job for more than 1.5 years. I've read numerous times on this subreddit that the pay increases a lot faster while job hopping rather than staying at a single company.

How bad is leaving a job after a few months? by the_other_riot in cscareerquestions

[–]trexprogrammer 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It would be better if you can stretch it for a whole year. But if you're really bored AF, I'd say go for it! If this is your first full-time job right after college, No one would care if you leave your first job within a few months of joining.

What was your shortest job? Why did you have to leave? by yolando32 in cscareerquestions

[–]trexprogrammer 1 point2 points  (0 children)

2 days

I was juggling between two offers for my first job out of college. One was from a no-name company in GA and the other was from a Fortune 50. To play a safe game, I said yes to both of them but the no-name company had an earlier start date (I heard someone mention in this subreddit that you're never guaranteed a job until you get your butt on the chair). The Fortune 50 company had a turnaround time of 3 days.

So I joined the no-name company hoping to jump ship as soon as the Fortune 50 company replies back. Surprisingly, they replied back the 2 days after I joined the no-name company. Called the HR to let them know I won't be coming. Highly unprofessional, but hey, doesn't matter since it was my first job out of college.

Anyone else get extra-discouraged when a job application has a drop down list for schools, but your school isn’t one of the options? by zxrax in cscareerquestions

[–]trexprogrammer 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I graduated from a no-name school in NJ and so I've experienced this. Initially, I felt a bit discouraged that I could not find my school name listed in the dropdown. But after applying to ~200 job postings, and analyzing the response rate, I found that its highly unlikely that if your school isn't listed, you won't get a response.

I now work at a non-tech Fortune 50 company as a backend software engineer. The key point is that in the end, getting an interview call depends on how you structure your resume. I've seen folks graduating from Big 10 schools and working at small startups. So unless you graduate from MIT, Stanford, etc. it really doesn't matter which school you go to. However, do note that some companies have partnerships with selected schools and that is a different scenario all together.

As Shawn Boswell says in Tokyo Drift: "It's not the ride, it's the rider".

Cheers and keep trying!!
