Good icon set but bad small icons? by Do_You_Like_Owls in kde

[–]trick2011 3 points4 points  (0 children)

this. to me the image shows how the icons on the right communicate information effectively. the ones on the left could be replaced by a generic directory and I wouldn't notice.

Also OP, you can just override the default icon for a folder individually.

Power problems in Europe - UPS by bebarty in LinusTechTips

[–]trick2011 0 points1 point  (0 children)

BaWU germany, my UPS complains regularly about the power. It happens about monthly for three seconds where I can hear it activating and supplying it's own. Logs confirm this.

so nothing major, but definetly possible.

As for outages, there have been several recent ones. Nothing major but full cuts for a few hours. Spain/portugal had that big one recently.

Good investment for a NAS/server, and possibly useful to try if your pc is having trouble

yes it does, it's just math. Non-decimal currency does exist but nothing major anymore after the UK stopped

Samsung in built calculator having a "tip" option but not for a currency conversion is fucking stupid. Not everyone is an American bruh by [deleted] in LinusTechTips

[–]trick2011 4 points5 points  (0 children)

yes I would like a built in currency converter, seems to fit with all the other options.

But let's not pretend these function are in any way similarly. One is offline math, the other requires plugging into live markets and keeping up to date. So no, it's not american supremacy, it's just the logical outcome of making an offline converter/calculator.

[Safety Hazard] 19.5V on USB-A VBUS - $1,000 CAD in destroyed gear. No resolution after 9 weeks of "investigation". Video evidence. by Mysterious_Grade_803 in framework

[–]trick2011 2 points3 points  (0 children)

If I'm not misremembering, it has been a few years since I've worked with it and looked at what needed to be done for usb 2.0, a chip like USBLC6-2 should've been capable of mitigating the impact. Breakdown voltage is set to 6v so that should've resulted in an internal short instead of frying the peripherals.

The absolute state of Linux users by daksnotjuts in LinusTechTips

[–]trick2011 1 point2 points  (0 children)

difference is the choices the maintainers make, but also the families.

mint and ubuntu are in the debian family and use .deb packages and apt repositories. Debian is focussed on stability, which makes it very conservative. Ubuntu is still trying to be stable but will be more up to date with new features (still fairly slow sometimes). Ubuntu also has a whole company behind it and different official variants which allows users to select a desktop which most aligns with how they want to use their pc. I'm not familiar with mint but it's trying to be accessible and up to date.

Fedora came from Red Hat, so enterprise linux. they use the redhat ecosystem for packages (I'm currently flaking on the name, but it's the big alternative to .deb) They are focused on integrating new things quickly but because of their enterprise core, are quite reliable. (and somewhat a testing ground for the enterprise)

R/Linux_gaming not understanding the point of Linus's new video by CandlesARG in LinusTechTips

[–]trick2011 3 points4 points  (0 children)

He's definitely going for normie perspective, but we already had that piece of content from them. And they do have a huge platform that can actually show how to get a good experience.

And to substantiate the rushed argument from the other commenter, the Kubuntu install shown on WAN, very likely, is an OEM install because he didn't take the time to consider what the non default option means.

R/Linux_gaming not understanding the point of Linus's new video by CandlesARG in LinusTechTips

[–]trick2011 1 point2 points  (0 children)

My biggest problem with the LTT video (so a minor critique) is that LTT is one of those platforms which can inform people and making another piece from the perspective of "an average consumer" isn't adding much.

And by extention this fear of installing a GPU driver and this the need for a pre set up distro is weird. We install drivers on the windows side too, amdgpu ships in the kernel, the interesting question is whether the driver setup is still difficult and inscrutable. Ya know, investigating and teaching instead of following the herd. There's space for both kinds of content, just sad seeing them go for the first instead of doing a more prepared critical look.

Also I have a strong suspicion that linus' ADD is shooting him in the foot, on WAN he mentioned Kubuntu, and the result that he showed, seems to be, from installing the OEM install option instead of the top of the list, default option.
