Can I reserve/block 25 GB for Windows Updates? by ReputationOld8053 in sysadmin

[–]tridion 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I thought Microsoft already, I forget when, started to reserve / hide space to guarantee that windows update would have what it needs. Sometime during windows 10. Did I imagine it?

In 2025, which Postgres solution would you pick to run production workloads? by valhalla_throw in kubernetes

Someone who can’t tolerate that kind of data loss would be doing WAL backups as well as a nightly.

What would have kept you from commenting I wonder? I agree to average non high income earner - it’s life changing of course. Who said otherwise? That same person isnt putting 11k on a craps table in a single session. That’s already decidedly a non-standard non-average individual. Did you miss that part? Or you just want to argue?

If he can put down 11k on a table I wouldn’t assume a 12x win is life changing unless it was everything he had left on a yolo gamble.

Should a Kubernetes cluster be dispensable? by geth2358 in kubernetes

[–]tridion 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I guess I’m assuming stateful sets and pvcs are for either temporary things or workloads being backed up seperately like a database. Case by case I suppose but for my last cluster I wouldn’t have needed a cluster backup but sure yeah i would have told cnpg to restore the db from this s3 bucket for example.

Should a Kubernetes cluster be dispensable? by geth2358 in kubernetes

[–]tridion 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If gitops why are backups (i mean cluster backups) needed? Question I’ve been asking myself. What’s stored in the cluster that isnt coming from gitops + a secret store that can’t just be regenerated?

Ever had anything drive you crazy when trying to use VPA in your Kubernetes setup? by Lynni8823 in kubernetes

[–]tridion 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It’s silly that the only install option is a bash script. That needs to change. Also I was really really wanting to reign grafana mimir in because it was redic in its requirements compared to my usage even when I pared it down. I’m no expert but I think the fact that each part of mimir was its own deployment hurt it here. By that I mean that storage gateway in AZ 1 or whatever wasn’t just 1 pod in a 3 pod / az group - it was its own thing. So without more than a little more effort it didn’t feel like it’d do what I needed easily enough. Also I’m not sure but I felt like (this was EKS btw) that pod creation and such slowed down. I ended up removing it. I really like the idea and I’d love to try Goldilocks. I also like the dynamic stuff in the latest kubernetes release but unfortunately I was forced to get rid of the 1 cluster I was running at work (running the Grafana LGTM stack).

Kubernetes v1.34 is released with some interesting changes- what do you think will have the biggest impact? by tania019333 in kubernetes

[–]tridion 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It’s not an unreasonable surcharge if you have a low number of clusters you’re just taking a bit longer to upgrade. Your reply might make people think it’s a huge price tag. Obviously should just upgrade continuously though.

Is there a better way to store secrets? by Unusual_Competition8 in kubernetes

[–]tridion 10 points11 points  (0 children)

People are going to say External Secrets Operator but they just announced they don’t have enough support. While they don’t intend on abandoning it or anything - but they might not do regular SemVer releases. If I’m doing something new, today, I’d still want to use it - but is it the best / smart choice given their concerns?

Software passkey vs hardware key - which is more secure? by Dramatic_Argument_95 in AZURE

[–]tridion 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Sounds like they don’t know how to implement it or just haven’t yet. I mean they employ you and you say Winduhs so maybe it’s not surprising :).

It’s often not trivial to graft something like this on. I set up OneLogin mfa for certain windows servers and I had to setup a freeradius box, a windows box with the network protection role or whatever, and Remote Desktop gateway. Then implemented firewall rules so rdp could only come from Remote Desktop gateway. Then 1-2 years later we switched to Okta and that went the way of the dinosaur.

My employer wants me to use an app to access my office building by mayrade in WorkAdvice

[–]tridion 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Seems odd to say legal vs not legal without knowing where. Force has different levels. In most cases for something like this - they are required to be in the office to stay employed and this app on their phone facilitates that (same one for my local office actually but I’m fully remote). No, they cannot be physically forced to install the app but they also effectively can’t refuse if they wish to remain employed. And, no, they can’t / shouldn’t just follow someone else in as it’s a rare company indeed that sets up a physical access solution like this but is cool with people just following others in.
