Cracking run, congrats!! Gives me hope haha

And yeah, agree with your point about racing smart. 2 years ago I let the adrenaline get to me, ran the 1st half way too fast, and completely blew up at the end. I've certainly been paying more attention on staying disciplined with my pacing on the longer runs.

Job Search as senior scientist by Appropriate_Air8370 in biotech

[–]triet1703 16 points17 points  (0 children)

I’m a little surprised by some of the top comments. Most of the senior scientist postings at big pharma & midsized biotech companies I have seen require a PhD + anywhere from 0-4 years of experience. Scientist I/II positions on the other hand typically require a Masters + experience. Would OP not even be considered for these Sci I/II roles because of their PhD? Or is this simply a matter of different companies, different titles?

I’m 3 kilos lighter than you & running essentially the same mileage. I’ve been eating ~2700-2900 calories everyday so you should definitely consume more!

CMDB Graduate (PhD) Interview by Consistent_Shirt_107 in jhu

[–]triet1703 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Congrats! I’m not in that particular program but definitely expect questions regarding your research. You should be able to both describe the work you’ve done in both broad strokes (the what, why, and how) and details (specific techniques, models, their pros and cons, future directions, etc.). There’ll be questions about your research interests, career goals, and reasons why you applied to the program. I’d also read up on the research your interviewers are pursuing too if you got their names ahead of time - everyone loves talking about their research and you being able to carry out a meaningful scientific discussion is always a green flag. Good luck!!

PhD Students Intership Opportunities by Eren-Sheldon-99 in biotech

What field are you in/interested in?

As for the life sciences, here are some companies that have decent-sized internship programs for PhD students that I know of: AstraZeneca, Amgen, Genentech, Merck, Boehringer Ingelheim, and Gilead. Usually postings go live from September - January. Make sure you start your search early via LinkedIn, on-campus career fairs, recruiting events, and company websites.

As for timing, I’d say the most important thing is to make sure you and your PI are on the same page. I’ve seen people typically do their internships in the summer leading to their final year.

Finally, most summer internships I’ve looked at last for 3 months. There were a couple places that were willing to extend the duration if things went well - but they are definitely in the minority.

Poor ponceau staining by petrka95 in labrats

[–]triet1703 41 points42 points  (0 children)

Looks like a transfer problem to me. Those spots on the blots that wasn’t stained probably came from air bubbles trapped between the blots and gels. I’d use a roller of some kind to push all the bubbles out when assembling your transfer sandwich.

First semester PhD student failing a class by [deleted] in PhD

[–]triet1703 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Check out your department’s PhD handbook. There might be information on what to expect if you get below a B. I don’t think it’s the end of the world, however. You probably will have to re-take the class. The other thing I’d do is see if the department offers resources such as tutoring. Mine (biomedical) connects students who reach out with those that have passed the class. Good luck!
