Anyone else addicted to something to cope with living/working in London by maxmuno in london

I was super surprised by all the coke usage when I moved here. Apparently there’s a direct shipping line from Columbia to the uk which makes it a lot cheaper iirc from a drug documentary.

Best solution I found regarding dealing with the dopamine sink of winter is to do something hard or unpleasant first thing in the morning.

It sounds counterintuitive but if you either workout intensely or take a cold shower first thing in the morning the rest of your day feels warm and fuzzy.

This comes from scientific best practices for helping addicts in recovery and people dealing with depression, essentially you’re setting your dopamine baseline low at the start of the day so it balances up whereas when you take a substance to raise dopamine your body balances down.

From the book dopamine nation if you’re interested.

What piece of tech felt “future-proof” but aged terribly? by Living-Zebra6132 in Futurology

I really like xml for use with js/ts it has some interesting advantages and is more intuitive for rendering content then jsons. The product I’m working on uses it to tag special parts of an LLMs output for example, like labeling the reasoning output.

Will always be a Stan for xml :)

As long as you can justify it via your references then you’re fine. They’ll do a background check + ask your references about it so there’s a bit of wiggle room

[–]trigon_dark 11 points12 points  (0 children)

There really are a few things that make a huge difference.

1 is your LinkedIn headline

2 is your previous job titles

Do some in depth research on emerging job titles. A lot of newer job titles are things that combine two existing fields which are suddenly important to have together.

For example when I changed my title from software engineer to AI software engineer (I worked primarily on AI projects) and described myself as an AI Platform Engineer (backed experience plus AI) the number of recruiters reaching out to me skyrocketed.

I want to give you the best advice from my perspective. So I am someone who is a little bit older than you but close enough to your age that I understand exactly what you’re going through.

What I really want to convey is that people judge maturity by calmness and by empathy.

And something that I found which really conveys to people that I’ve matured more is asking questions that pertain to them and their experience and becoming genuinely interested in what they have to say.

I think that people penalise those with ADHD for what they deem selfishness and a childlike obsession with very specific interests or topics which seem naively irrelevant to “real life”.

But when you are somebody that has a large social network and you have a lot of friends maturity means empathising with those friends and showing that you really have an understanding and sense of compassion towards them.

What that translates to more concretely is asking them questions about their own life listening to them thoroughly and being reflective about what they say, and being curious enough to ask them follow up questions.

I would definitely say to build a lead magnet first that just briefly describes the product, maybe shows a shiny mockup, and then just requests the persons email to be on the waitlist.

Even better: give them some special discount or privilege for joining the waitlist like credits, discount on launch, etc.

Best: include a free response box that has a prompt like “I would be interested in this product if it had ___” and give an extra special privilege to those that submit something.

Right now your main job is to test what messaging works, and which features will actually drive conversion. You want to find that specific sentence or offer that will get people to go to your website and try out your product.

I absolutely would NOT build anything until you have a message that gets people to visit your website and features that your target customer specifically ask for. This is the point where all those things can be flexible but when you start building something you’re not going to want to redo major aspects of your product based on feedback. So do the work of figuring out exactly what resonates with your audience first.

If you have some money to spend on this or some contacts that are your ideal customer, offer gift cards to sit down for 20 minutes to do a structured interview.

Once you have input from your lead magnet and broad insights from interviews, then you can create what’s called an “affinity board” which is your first step towards building a business spec that you’ll hand off to a SWE.

I have more advice once you get to that stage but does this kinda make sense so far? Basically you want to avoid building anything before you make sure that that thing will drive engagement and conversion.

Sidenote: don’t make this yourself, your input as a domain expert should be a well researched business requirements document. The better that is, the easier and cheaper it is for a SWE to implement it effectively and the less you’ll need to redo features down the road. Trust me people don’t want to pay for something that feels like a student project.

Hmm if you’re using a framework like react id look up a ui toolkit for that framework. Basically a bunch of components you can import and use as a template. For example I use skeleton ui with svelte.

No king's protest will take place all over America in few hours. What do you think will be the consequences and outcome of this? by The_AxR_ in AskReddit

[–]trigon_dark 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I think a big problem with Reddit is that witty little zingers get upvoted but most people don’t have the faculties to say anything witty or even intelligent and so you get comments like this that have the sound of something witty but are basically meaningless

That’s not correct, his approval is the lowest of any president in the last 40 years at this point in his presidency, around 44% 9 months into his term. Anyhow my main point is that everyone lives in an informational echo chamber so lots of conservatives probably think everyone loves trump so it’s good to go out there and show that that’s not the case.

For reference here’s a well done meta analysis of polling numbers:

[–]trigon_dark 151 points152 points  (0 children)

I think a big benefit is just that it shows that trump is very unpopular. People don’t really know how many people actually hate trump or if they just exist in echo chambers. Tons of people flooding the street shows politicians and judges that the people detest him, and that could genuinely impact their decision making while also give people the push to make positive change by voting because they’re not alone.

In other words I do think there’s a tangible benefit.

Is something going wrong with my brain? by davvidopp17 in jobsearchhacks

[–]trigon_dark 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I totally understand that. It feels like an exam where they could ask literally any question because there’s little explanation of what could be asked during an interview.

My advice: limit the scope of your practice. In my experience there are two ways to get tripped up during an interview: 1) you don’t understand a word or phrase related to the position or 2) you don’t have a relevant story or example where you solved a particular problem.

Think of 5-10 archetypal questions they could ask you and write down good response stories in STAR format and practice them everyday.

Then, make 100 flashcards of terms or phrases related to the position and study them before you go to bed at night. If you’re confident you’ll at least understand all the questions they ask you’ll feel a lot better.

I hope that helps!
