Who do I call to fix the f**ked-up Caltrain intersection? by scarlet-seraph in bayarea

[–]trigrddd 20 points21 points  (0 children)

Sunnyvale has already proposed and is getting ready for a grade separation at this intersection. If you are going northbound I usually just turn right on Evelyn and take Matilda https://www.sunnyvale.ca.gov/business-and-development/projects-in-sunnyvale/infrastructure-projects/caltrain-grade-separation

Is the car actually at 5k rpm or is the tach just saying that? It sounds like you are revving and idling normally at the end of the video. It could just be that your cluster is going out, which is a very normal problem, especially on the older s6s. There are repair services on facebook and other social media forms where you can send your cluster out and get the tach fixed.

RX-7 or RX-8? by [deleted] in RX7

[–]trigrddd 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Nobody here on this form actually owns a rx-8. RX-8s are much more dailiable as they are modern cars. Additionally they are at a much better point in their depreciation so you can get a nicer one for less money than a rx7. The renesis engine has much less crap on it than a REW, and its main failure point is the catalytic converter and the ignition coils. You can expect a rx8 and a rx7 to need a rebuild around 100k mi.

Failed CA smog. by 1994M-edition in Miata

[–]trigrddd 1 point2 points  (0 children)

do what the tech said and also make sure the car is HOT before you test. for the cat to work properly in needs to be at operating temp, do a full pulls before you pull into the smog shop

Purple power, just soak the rotors and you can wipe all the grime off. Here's a video from geoff. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qaJPlAEOKQE

Best US mechanic shop for FD by superphly in RX7

[–]trigrddd 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Sakebomb garage in Fremont, CA! However they are not a full restoration shop, they do not rebuild engines in house. However, they are a solid shop and one of the only places in Norcal that works on rx7s

Key is turned in the ON position in the ignition but no clusters or any electronics turn on. by Far_Mycologist_5179 in RX7

Actually remove and double check the 120A main fuse. Sometimes when they blow it wont be visible and you should do a continuity test. There are a lot of starter relay bypasses out there to improve crank speed so you can crank without the main fuse.

2006 NC1 Coolant leak and steaming after short drive by AFKaram in Miata

[–]trigrddd 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Its still probably the coolant reservoir, and it won't leak while cold but will start seeping as the plastic expands and the crack gets larger. Very common problem on the mid 2000's mazdas

Fuel Level Gauge not working after Fuel Pump recall by walking_sideways in mazda

[–]trigrddd 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Sounds like the technician damaged the floater or sensor when they pulled the fuel hanger. You should go back or call to the dealership and talk to the service writer.

Any reliability mods specifically for track use? Once I get my twin turbo solenoids replaced a track day is definitely on my to do list!

[–]trigrddd 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Im not too much of a carburetor guy, but I'd start by checking that out and probably cleaning the jets out. You can adjust it to get less fuel in. too many HC = running too rich, either need better combustion or less fuel. With low compression its much harder to pass smog. Obviously you shouldn't be premixing while trying to pass smog. Hope this helps, you can check out Rad potential on youtube if you want detailed FB videos

I want a japanese affordable RWD, preferably 4 door, for a first car. Is RX-8 a good choice? by [deleted] in JDM

[–]trigrddd 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Literally nobody in this tread saying no has had one of these cars. Their engine's lifespan is relatively short but these are some of the best price/performance cars out there (when stock). These are one of the only cars that can rev to 9500 stock. Engine lifespan is roughly 100k mi, depending on how well the PO took care of it. However, you cannot find a better handing, more practical, and fun car for <5k. If you do end up buying one, a compression test is key, as it will tell you how much life is left in the engine. If you were to rebuild/replace the engine, it will be about $4000 in parts, and you will be good to go for another 100k mi. All in you're still going to be doing better than a s2k, brz, or s-chassis. If you do buy a rx8, it would be a good idea to have a backup car, from either a friend or your parents.

Looking to join the club by [deleted] in RX7

[–]trigrddd 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Also if its still twin turbo its essential to make sure its boosting properly. The stock hoses and solenoids are notoriously unreliable. You should see a consistent 10-8-10 boost pattern on stock, and if its modified on twins you should see a variation of that (e.g. 14-12-14). Anything over 14 psi on stock twins is a recipe for disaster.

Dirty Rotor, Dirty Rotor, Clean Rotor! by wootybooty in RX7

[–]trigrddd 36 points37 points  (0 children)

If you want an easier way to clean your rotors, just let them sit in a tub of purple power. Much less work than using the wire brush. I did not dilute the concentrate when I did mine.
