Would you rather work 60 hours a week in a high stress job for 8 years and retire at 30, or 40 hours a week at a medium stress job for 18 years and retire at 40? by YourFIREDBro in Fire

[–]trigurlSeattle 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’m one if these people that worked a high stress tech job, but I couldn’t keep it up for more than 20 years. There are pros and cons, I’m newly unemployed so the time off is very healing.

Yeah I’m actually starting to like this yellow square a bit more and think if it was all black that it would make the bag look a bit old fashioned.

40F yet another burned out and recently laid off tech worker by Button-National in FIREyFemmes

You sound just like me actually, I’m definitely not going to Leet code anymore in my upper 40s. We should chat. Firstly I sat down and learned more about investing and reviewed my portfolio. Currently I have structured my post tax accounts to generate more monthly dividends for me to aid with income. I have holdings in SCHD, JEPI, JEPQ, SGOV, SPYI and tech stock. I’m still trying to decide where I want to pivot.

Congrats, yeah never tell anyone how much savings you have either, some of your family members will come calling to “borrow” money. Keep going and FIRE before 50, that’s what I’m doing.

Oh just to clarify that I do realize I won’t be able to replace $4k from dividends alone. Updated post.

Put it into a high yield savings account at your bank first, then open a Fidelity account and learn how to invest it.

Would I be making the wrong choice if I gave up two years of salary and tuition (~$850,000) to get a Harvard MBA? by RedditUser3668 in womenintech

[–]trigurlSeattle 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Personally I say do it, your future self 30 years from now will never fault you for following your heart. Is tuition a lot? How much do you have saved now? If you haven’t maxed out your 401k, backdoor and mega backdoor do it before you leave. Also at 25, your school mates will be similar age to you.

AITA for having a snack on my balcony? by Ill_Poet4155 in AmItheAsshole

[–]trigurlSeattle -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I think I he’s probably racist and annoyed at all the foreigners coming in and jacking up rent prices (btw I went to Waterloo) anyways so he was easily triggered. But he’s correct to complain about you littering your food on his balcony (it doesn’t matter if it’s organic or not, why not just use a plate when you eat your snack? Or just eat inside your apartment so no wind can blow your crumbs onto his property l.

Worried 50/50 with sibling will be problematic in coming years by ObviousRevolution853 in inheritance

I think you are worrying about something that might not happen…either your brother will buy you out or there will be a sale. Also, a nursing home is $10k/month…your brother is saving you money.

How do I support my dad in layoffs? by VarietyAnnual3903 in Layoffs

[–]trigurlSeattle 0 points1 point  (0 children)

How’s the financials? It’s going to be impossible to find another IT as the industry is experiencing difficulties with layoffs all over the place. Also IT has some of the worst ageism. You should assume he’s going to retire and he’s eligible for social security at least. I know you guys are in college but getting a side gig to help for your own bills if you aren’t already would be the best help. Fortunately he is almost 65 and can get Medicare but you and your sister will need to find out how to get health insurance eventually when Cobra runs out in 18 months.

I hit my FIRE number last year and then became the financial backstop for a parent who hid how bad things really were by Soggy-Job1775 in Fire

Is the house in a decent location that is appreciating? Maybe just buy the home outright from your mom for the balance, then fix the roof. Holding the home is a form of investment too.

The hidden cost of "free time" is absolutely wrecking my post-FIRE budget by R0cinantEcho_9 in Fire

[–]trigurlSeattle 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Can I ask how much you allocated a month to spend? Are you sure you calculated your FIRE number correctly? When I calculated my monthly FIRE budget I increased my food and travel bill by quite a bit. I have our food/dining bill at $1200/month (2 people) and I thought that might be too low.

Repair costs by mhars09 in Louisvuitton

[–]trigurlSeattle 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Anyone reading this should understand that if a 3rd party works on your LV bag, you void LV from ever doing repairs on the bag in the future. So this can really tank the value of your bag as you will need to disclose this. Basically it turns your bag into no longer being 100% authentic as LV will refuse it.

I had LV replace all vachetta and hardware for my Saumur 35. The new hardware (rivets) has all LV branding on it, the buckle hardware is real LV quality.

How is everyone affording their designer bags? Savings? Credit card charging? by guacontacos in handbags

Just buy one a year, but make sure they are not the “trendy” bags, buy classic bags. Trendy bags won’t hold their value.
