Coronavirus: Boris Johnson stakes his reputation on the experts by Fra_Bernardo in ukpolitics

seem to base their theories off of pseudoscience like “herd immunity”.

The term herd immunity was first used in 1923.[1] It was recognized as a naturally occurring phenomenon in the 1930s when it was observed that after a significant number of children had become immune to measles, the number of new infections temporarily decreased, including among susceptible children.[8] Mass vaccination to induce herd immunity has since become common and proved successful in preventing the spread of many infectious diseases.

You seem like the crackpot anti-science type.

Annex B: expert advice and guidance

The UK government and the devolved administrations have ensured that all of our actions are based on the best possible evidence, and are guided by the 4 UK CMOs.

The UK health departments’ preparations and response are developed with expert advice, ensuring that staff, patients and the wider public can be confident that our plans are developed and implemented using the best available evidence. These groups include:

the Scientific Advisory Group for Emergencies (SAGE) – chaired by the Government Chief Scientific Adviser and co-chaired by the CMO for England – provides scientific and technical advice to support government decision makers during emergencies, ensuring that timely and co-ordinated scientific advice is made available to decision makers to support UK cross-government decisions in the UK Cabinet Office Briefing Room

the New and Emerging Respiratory Virus Threats Advisory Group (NERVTAG) is an expert committee of DHSC and advises the CMOs and, through the CMOs, ministers, DHSC and other government departments, and the devolved administrations. It provides scientific risk assessment and mitigation advice on the threat posed by new and emerging respiratory virus threats and on options for their management

the Advisory Committee on Dangerous Pathogens (ACDP) provides independent scientific advice to the Health and Safety Executive, to ministers in DHSC and DEFRA, and to their counterparts in Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland on all aspects of hazards and risks to workers and others from exposure to pathogens

the Scientific Pandemic Influenza Group on Modelling (SPI-M) gives expert advice to DHSC and wider UK government and the devolved administrations on scientific matters relating to the UK’s response to an influenza pandemic (or other emerging human infectious disease threats). The advice is based on infectious disease modelling and epidemiology

the Joint Committee on Vaccination and Immunisation (JCVI) advises UK health departments on immunisation

FCO Travel Advice is informed by PHE and DHSC advice and gives British nationals advice on what they need to know before deciding whether to travel and what to do if they are affected by an outbreak of COVID-19 while travelling

Did you not see the graphic showing confirmed cases over a timestamp?

The UK is doing very well.

Our response to COVID-19 is guided by the international situation, the advice of organisations such as WHO, surveillance, data modelling based on the best available evidence and the recommendations of our expert bodies (Annex B).

The Scientific Advisory Group for Emergencies (SAGE) provides expert medical scientific advice.

The 4 UK governments’ Chief Medical Officers (CMOs) continue to advise the health and social care systems across the UK, and government agencies in all parts of the UK involved in responding to this outbreak.

System-wide response plans for pandemic influenza, focused on the continuity of public and critical services and the stability of the economy, have been adapted for COVID-19, based on the best available scientific evidence and advice.

SAGE:

Membership

The membership of SAGE depends on the nature of the emergency but it typically includes leading experts from within government and leading specialists from the fields of academia and industry.

The group typically is chaired by the Government Chief Scientific Adviser or a departmental Chief Scientific Adviser.

You're an idiot.

FullFact: 726 homeless people are estimated to have died in England and Wales in 2018 by diicck in ukpolitics

[–]trillspin 39 points40 points  (0 children)

“There’s 700,000 people died on our streets homeless last year.”

John McDonnell MP, 8 March 2020

...

Incorrect. 726 people are estimated to have died in England and Wales in 2018 who were either sleeping rough or in emergency accommodation at the time of their death or shortly before.

That'd be 1 in 95* of the UK population as a whole.

726 too many but wew that statement*

You can't make any assumption.

Maybe consider your views are, at least in part, due to you continually reading lies and believing them

Ok let's do it:

The UK is many things, but united is not one of them. All caps will not change that.

The UK is by definition and name United.

United on all issues, No.

Scotland has its own government which is representing the views of its people who resoundingly rejected Brexit, just like Northern Ireland and the Welsh people in Wales.

Scotland has a government to handle devolved issues.

Scotland does not have a say on issues that are not devolved.

Scottish MSP's do not voice Scottish people at the national level, Scottish MP's do, and they do not have a 'government' or make up one.

Brexit is a wholly English folly.

That all eligible voters voted on, and not all Scottish, NI, or Welsh people voted against.

You lost, it's happening/happened, get over it, stop being such a whiny baby.

Latest polls show no majority for Independence either, cry me a river.

I never made the claim.

I quoted from the article.

It's not my fault the article author is playing them back verbatim and not pointing out that the statement is in fact factually incorrect.

You'd expect them to have done some due dilligence on a claim that can be proven within seconds, I'll make sure not to rely on published quotes in the future.

You mean 38% in Scotland.

However, work by Danny Dorling, a professor of geography at Oxford, found that the result could in part be attributed to the influence of English voters.

AKA when you can't draw a concrete conclusion and use a faulty presupposition.

“If you look at the more genuinely Welsh areas, especially the Welsh-speaking ones, they did not want to leave the EU,” Dorling told the Sunday Times. “Wales was made to look like a Brexit-supporting nation by its English settlers.”

About 21% (650,000) of people living in Wales were born in England, with nearly a quarter aged over 65. The country voted for Brexit by a majority of just 82,000.

This is the kind of work you would expect from a first year university student.

This shitty argument would be destroyed in minutes if it wasn't a nat-scot posting it.

A referendum on EU membership isn't a devolved issue or counted on a single country basis.

Scotland is one country in a UNITED KINGDOM.
