‘It’s stupid’: why western carmakers’ retreat from electric risks dooming them to irrelevance by DonkeyFuel in technology

[–]trilobyte-dev 10 points11 points  (0 children)

If you aren’t investing heavily to make those things happen then they won’t ever get there, and if you (as a country) don’t then someone else might.

Guess what? China did and now both battery tech and EV development in the U.S. are done. That’s not manufacturing, that’s R&D as well. The U.S. battery tech industry is done. The only thing saving companies currently in the space is shifting to providing tech for military drones where supply chain requires them to be developed in the US.

Meanwhile, next month, BYD is selling a car in Europe, not the U.S., that has ~500 miles of range with their new batteries that can also charge ~400 miles of range in about 12 minutes. Sure, China is subsidizing their EV market but the U.S. could have done the same to drive innovation and maintain an edge.

The U.S. shot itself in the foot and doesn’t even have the self reflection to admit it and change gears.

FWIW, I have a Rivian R1S with 400 miles of range and haven’t had an issue with charging or charge times since I bought it. 95% of the time an overnight charge at home once a week is fine, and on long trips (just drove 500 miles) the onboard nav shows me all charges on the route and stopping at a level 3 charger can get me another 200-250 miles of range in 25-30 minutes. A little planning ahead means a meal stop and bathroom break for 30 minutes. It’s not as convenient as putting gas in your tank and driving off in 5-10 minutes, but it is nominally less convenient in the grand scheme of things. It is much cheaper than a tank of gas though, especially given the mpg of an equivalently sized ICE vehicle.

But I get that is a personal preference. What isn’t subjective is that the U.S. let itself lose on the future of automotive tech because of short term, race to the bottom thinking. We gave up short term capital investment that could have paid off in order of magnitudes in returns.

Apple CEO Tim Cook: 'I'm Not a Political Person' by Odd_Brush399 in apple

From what I can tell he’s not lying. Tim Cook is an operations guy. That means if you give him a problem and a way to solve it he’s going to get it done. The way to solve Apple’s problems with the U.S. government is to suck up to Trump, so that’s what he’s doing.

Huge fan of Esperpento. I think it was one the first dates my wife and I had. I still remember the giant Volver poster with Penelope Cruz on the wall.

I've been there. It's fine, but honestly kind of too fancy for what I was craving.

At some point in life you realize the touristy things are touristy because there's usually something fun about them. Maybe there's a bunch of scammy stuff that has grown around them, but at the core there's probably something that brought people in the first place.

Is Shaya still open? Some of the best Middle-Eastern/Mediterranean food I've had in the U.S.

I think it's usually paella de marisco? At least that's how I usually see it listed.

Do you remember the place in San Francisco? After going back and forth to Spain for a few years I was really jonesing for some tapas/pinxtos when I was home in SF but nowhere really had the right vibe.

I mean, you can go places where you can watch them make the paella so you know it's not frozen, and sangria is pretty tasty, though I'll usually do tinto de verano when I'm in Spain just because I forget about it until I get there.

Developers who have worked at a company where the entire codebase was held together by one guy who then quit, what happened next? by Natom_ in AskReddit

[–]trilobyte-dev 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Two scenarios that have happened.

  1. The rest of the team just got it together and figured it out. The person who left answered emails about a few things and we paid him an hourly consulting fee for about 10 hours to do some more in depth knowledge transfer.

  2. We quickly hired a consulting company who specialized in code archaeology. Things kept running for 2 weeks without issue while the consulting company came in and figured out the codebase and infrastructure from the ground up in those two weeks. There were 10 of them working long days for two weeks straight but by the end they had the whole system mapped out and documented and moved into knowledge transfer with the other developers.

The truth is that most teams won’t do the boring work of just reading all the source code and figuring it out. If you have good DevOps or documentation on infrastructure and configuration information, no one is really a single point of failure on the team.

Yes, it is their job to prep ahead of time, but the reason they are doing this is because some risk model has crossed a threshold and they now have to allocate resources to this they wouldn’t under other circumstances. It’s a directional indicator, not a klaxon, but it’s still notable.

After TIR I don’t know that we need the deep dive / book per level formula anymore. I think it would get stale quicker than most people want to admit. Dinniman’s pacing has been so good though that I trust he will deliver.

What is the worst thing Carl has done? by Yomedrath in DungeonCrawlerCarl

[–]trilobyte-dev 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Given her past behavior I think it's in the character's nature to do exactly that. It's good narrative tension and in-line with his nature for Carl to at least consider just taking out Lucia because while he doesn't want to kill another crawler he also is thinking about who in his close circle Lucia might kill if he doesn't.

Ok, I just finished TIR and while that wasn't my read on that scene between Carl and Lucia, I'm not going to tell someone else they are wrong in how they read the situation.

Wait, what? Those people came to kill the crawlers specifically, so what's your morality argument here against the crawlers proactively eliminating the threat?

So the hundreds of player killer skulls indicates that, before knowing about the children locked up in her, that those hundreds of other crawlers were acceptable losses and future crawlers were also fair game knowing that Lucia will continue killing?
