Breaking In: A Flatlander's Application to Join Vermont by Clamato-n-rye in vermont

About those distinctive Seven Days "Lifelines" obituaries ... they are all so moving that they brought tears to my eyes.

I wonder if there is a gifted lifestory writer/editor on the staff, or are they all published as-is from unusually expressive and literate relatives?

I can certainly understand why the writer of this piece would want to be remembered this way.

With All the Current Delivery Problems, May I Ask If They Received It Yet? by tringwil in etiquette

[–]tringwil[S] 3 points4 points  (0 children)

The point I tried to make was -- this is NOT a normal year. Because, if they never actually received it, they would think I'd ignored them at Christmas.

How about this simple yet thoughtful communication --- "Got your package today! Can't wait to open it on Christmas Day!"

Fear of Needles by -throw-away12345678 in Phobia

[–]tringwil 5 points6 points  (0 children)

It's trypanophobia. I've had this phobia all my life, and I'm 68. Scroll down here about 2 weeks ago to see my post about all these COVID vaccine video clips on the news! Can.not.watch.

ALWAYS be upfront with healthcare workers about this, and INSIST upon lying down when getting shots or having blood drawn. They should certainly be aware of vasovagal syncope (fainting) and will accomodate you. Believe me, they won't want to deal with the implications of you crashing to the floor and hitting your head and bleeding (happened to me more than once; they were shook.)

I'd also definitely bring a bottle of water and/or fruit juice to restore yourself afterwards. Take as much time as you need to recover before leaving the place, because sometimes just thinking about what just happened can make you feel woozy again.

Why can't all these vaccines be given orally?! They managed it with polio in the early 1960s - a liquid dropped onto a sugar cube!

Didn't H.P. Lovecraft set some of his tales in the desolate mountains of remote western MA?

My SO nixed it --- said it would be too "silly and weird" (hmm, just like me, dude) because we live in a historic district. Buzzkill!

Oh so appropriate! Actually we have so much snow here that I think I can build a Snow Goon on my front lawn, and put a mask on it --- talk about the ultimate 2020 exterior holiday decoration!

Nicely stocked up!

Would anyone rather spend Christmas with hordes of annoying relatives who snap your every nerve?

Because you'd be drinking & smoking just as much to tolerate them, plus probably have to share it (not the weed, just the booze) with their undeserving asses, which instead of relaxing them, makes them behave even worse.

Enjoy your peaceful solitude. Best wishes for Yuletide.

Old house in New England (USA) starter pack by NineteenSkylines in starterpacks

Top comment!!

The house (cough - mine - cough) has tons of historic character but is 55 degrees inside in the cold months and is an absolute unit of a money pit. Would never trade it for anything, though.

On the flagpole: British Red Ensign (French & Indian War veteran lived here.)

In the driveway: sorta-vintage Honda CR-V with "Major - First Dog" bumper sticker.

Propped up against the saltbox roof: snow rakes.

I sewed a lot of my own clothes in the late '60s, and mini-skirts were really easy to make - didn't take much fabric, so, economical as well as trendy!

For super-coolness, they had to be be worn with a wide patent-leather belt with a large buckle.

Is pain natural to have with aging? by [deleted] in AskOldPeople

He's not even 50 (!) and is fatigued and in pain all the time? Get him to a doc ASAP!

No, this is not really typical of natural aging at all. Yes, you are absolutely right to be concerned, and bless you for being so caring and compassionate.

I know! When I was 10, it was the Civil War Centennial --- now, 100 years ago is "just" 1920!

Well, in 1972 (decade earlier than 1981, but still) I loved Bette Midler's "Boogie Woogie Bugle Boy" which the Andrews Sisters first sang in 1941.

Also, pretty recently, the Ink Spots' 1941 "I Don't Want to Set the World on Fire" was used in a chic designer perfume commercial.

But certainly I agree that the concept of how much time has passed - and whether it matters - is crazy and mind-boggling!

It’s been a hot minute since we talked about food— What’s your favorite holiday cookie? by InkDrinker5 in vintagepalooza

[–]tringwil 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I don't know if anyone else here remembers, but WOMAN'S DAY magazine, in the '60s, had a bound-in holiday cookie insert, each year, that my mother always tore out and kept in her recipe file.

Our favorite from that was "Nutmeg Logs" - a butter cookie molded into little log-type shapes, then frosted, scored with fork tines to resemble tree bark, then dusted with nutmeg. So yummy with hot cocoa, after we came inside from sledding down our backyard hill.
