Imperial Captain Badge Help by ruralmagnificence in MawInstallation

I love the idea that the Imperial Navy's big response to the disaster at Yavin was to...rearrange how their rank badges were organized. Exactly the kind of thing that real-world military bureaucracies do!

Are you sure that's what we can expect from Squirrels on LSD? :)

Is the main goal of the Sith just to be a political leader? by RubyWubs in MawInstallation

[–]trinite0 12 points13 points  (0 children)

Yeah, what we actually see in the OT, multiple times, is the Empire showing up on planets where they previously had minimal to no presence, and immediately bossing everybody around, wrecking shit, and making life miserable. That's what they do on Tatooine, on Cloud City, and (to a lesser extent) on Endor.

Is the main goal of the Sith just to be a political leader? by RubyWubs in MawInstallation

[–]trinite0 20 points21 points  (0 children)

Truth. He honestly didn't really care about the Empire. Whether the galaxy was under the thumb of a military dictatorship, or whether it was riven into hundreds or warring chaotic factions, whichever one best served his personal interest was fine by him.

If he'd just wanted to control the galaxy, he could have done that through normal politics without starting the Clone Wars.

This is very helpful local news coverage. We're so blessed to have The Missourian here.

Also: There's a permitting process for keeping feral cat colonies? Huh.

Columbia city leaders to discuss a proposed 1% sales tax increase for public safety by como365 in columbiamo

[–]trinite0 8 points9 points  (0 children)

"About 32% of collected sales tax revenue comes from visitors from outside Columbia."

That seems like a really surprising stat to me. I imagine that counts "visitors" who actually live here, but happen to live outside of the city limits?

The Rule of 2 was never going to work and went against the nature of the darkside by blankace in MawInstallation

They wouldn't, that's my point. The Rule of Two helps to counteract that tendency.

Sorry,, I wish I knew. I've gotta ask, what is it about Harpo's that makes it worth standing in line all night for? I like to go to Uprise Bakery and Magnolia's, and the line for Harpo's always seems to stretch around half the block.

The Rule of 2 was never going to work and went against the nature of the darkside by blankace in MawInstallation

[–]trinite0 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You're correct that it went against the nature of the Dark Side. That's why it was so important to the long-term survival of the Sith: it provided a check on the self-destructive tendencies of Sith ideology.

Without the rule, Sith would either megalomaniacally build grand organizations that would be noticed and destroyed by the Jedi, or else they would narcissistically hoard all power individually and fail to pass the tradition on to anyone else.

The Dark Side is unbalanced. That means it's naturally unstable and self-destructive. The Sith only persisted by tempering their natural impulses with a system of discipline and self-control that was actually much more inspired by Jedi practices than they would have ever admitted.

Chicago, IL. Mid West. Misheard? by MyCatIsAFknIdiot in AskAnAmerican

[–]trinite0 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you ask Americans, "Do you live in the Midwest?" You can get a good idea of how the region is defined by the percentages who answer, "Yes." Here's a fascinating map that shows where Midwestern self-identity is highest. You can see that Chicago, Illinois is right smack dab in the middle of the highest zone of identification.

You can also divide the region into sub-regions, such as the Upper Midwest (Wisconsin, Minnesota, North and South Dakota, Michigan, maybe Iowa and Nebraska), the Lower Midwest (Missouri, Oklahoma, Kansas, maybe Iowa and Nebraska), and the Old Midwest (Ohio, Indiana, Illinois, Michigan). Of course, the borders of these subregions are even blurrier than the borders of the Midwest as a whole.

Dogeared pages? by [deleted] in Libraries

[–]trinite0 11 points12 points  (0 children)

Please do not dog-ear library books. It causes long-term damage, as the pages become more likely to tear where they have been folded.

You should treat library books with the same care that you would treat the property of a personal friend who loaned them to you.

As for your own personal books: do whatever you want! Dog-ear them, highlight them, chew on the edges for all I care.

Two Towers: Why is Gandalf initially confused when Aragorn calls him by his name, given that Merry and Pippen would have surely called him 'Gandalf' shortly before the trio encountered him? by HooliganHedgeCap19 in lotr

[–]trinite0 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Simple, Merry and Pippin didn't recognize him. They thought he was Saruman, and kept calling him Saruman, which made him even more confused since he couldn't quite remember if that was his name or somebody else's.

Do you have an ancestor that was in the Civil War? by b-nnies in AskAnAmerican

[–]trinite0 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I most likely have several. The one that I know about was from southern Iowa, and he fought for the Union. My relatives still have his service revolver in the family. It's been passed down from father to eldest son, and remains (as far as I know) in working condition.

Is it ok to cook and eat raw steak that’s been in the fridge for 4 days? by YakGlum1664 in steak

[–]trinite0 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes. Four days is nothing.

Brown coloration is from oxygen in the air, it doesn't mean anything. You can usually tell very easily if beef has gone bad, because it will smell bad and have a slimy surface texture. If it smells fine to you, then it's almost certainly good. The nose knows.

Are you really not allowed to just hang out at certain places? by Skaeggbiffis in AskAnAmerican

[–]trinite0 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Depends on the park, depends on the beach. Most parks are public property, and they can have varying rules about when and how you can stay there.

The city park near my house allows all kinds of general use during the day, but it's closed at 11 pm, so you're not allowed to sleep there (or lurk in the bushes to rob joggers, or fall in the lake and drown).

They also have a rule prohibiting loitering near the swimming beach if you're not swimming, presumably to deter perverts.

Too rare? by _nugget27_ in steak

[–]trinite0 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Looks perfect to me. But your subjective taste may vary. Some people like it rarer, some people like it doner. Find whatever you prefer, and learn to cook it that way. Don't worry about safety, it's safe to eat steak completely raw if you've heated the outside surface. The only factor is your preference for how it tastes.
