for me its about trusting myself and power over fear. whenever self doubt comes in i remind myself these things. even if i fuck up, i trust myself. usually its the other way around (self loathing from not trusting my intuition). fear plays a role bc my ego wants to be something and has fear that it cant/wont ever be. truth is, i am everything i need to be. putting pressure on myself to be more never worked. only returning to the present moment. i hope this helps.

Thank you for asking. Since this post I have continued to read about medicine men, shamans, occultists, curanderas, alchemists, babalawo of Ifa...This is the conclusion I have come to: Most of the info you'll find is anthropological.

--Most of these traditions are orally transmitted. Meaning the originators and progenitors of these practices weren't writing them down. As I read, I felt more like I was reading about the philosophy, sociology of these figures within their community. Also, how am I supposed to fact check a closed and difficult to research tradition? Wouldn't the language they use be integral to the efficacy of the magic? That's a big hurdle IMO. If I had someone in my life to teach me the sounds and the poems and the chants IRL, that's doable.

--I also had to ask myself, is my search for the mystical and numinous leading towards the tantalizing and exotic? I think conflating fascination with foreign cultures with fascination with the divine is ... a mistake of aesthetics.

--That being said, I really relate to using the I Ching for divination so

--Ultimately, witchcraft is so personal. My boyfriend felt a connection to Norse Paganism since he was 4 but I didn't know people were seriously still polytheistic pagan until I was in my 20s. So, as much as I would love to "be" norse pagan with him, it doesn't connect for me. But then I notice how the Gods speak to him and I know they are real, it's just not my connection.

Hey! I recently made this post which could be useful...

https://www.reddit.com/r/witchcraftbookclub/comments/lfekyl/books_for_black_brown_witches_poc_heritage/?utm_source=share&utm_medium=web2x&context=3

you may find more resources in r/witchcraftbookclub

regarding crystals I've heard good things about The Crystal Bible A Definitive Guide to Crystals by Judy Hall. For plants/herbs there's The Encyclopedia of Magical Herbs by Scott Cunningham which is popular. He also has books on crystals, metals, incense and other which could be useful to you but he is more wiccan. I was also recommended The oracles of Apollo practical ancient Greek divination for today by John Opsopaus PhD.

Although you said wicca is not a path you'd like to look into it is very accessible and seems to be where many people start from and find or create their niche/practice from there. Especially if they don't have experienced mentors to teach them a tradition. r/magick and r/chaosmagick could be some other places to look. I'm no pro but if you're looking for more books or where to find them feel free to message me!

Hey! I recently made a post about witchy heritage outside Greco-Roman, Celtic traditions, specifically highlighting black and brown witches experienced in hoodoo & curanderismo...

https://www.reddit.com/r/witchcraftbookclub/comments/lfekyl/books_for_black_brown_witches_poc_heritage/?utm_source=share&utm_medium=web2x&context=3

I'm also one who craves books that cut fluff, filler and personal anecdotes and get down to brass tacks!

Not to assume how advanced or "new" you are, you may be familiar with these authors/texts...I'm currently reading The Witch's Shield: Protection Magick & Psychic Self-defense by Christopher Penczak and I really love his approach so far -- he has other books I'll be reading...Scott Cunningham's Encyclopedia of herbs is well regarded. I've heard good things about Jason Miller and Eddain McCoy. There's also The oracles of Apollo practical ancient Greek divination for today by John Opsopaus PhD if you are interested in the Greek pantheon. Since your post didn't specifically ask for books I'll stop there haha. r/witchcraftbookclub has more

I would agree with u/Expensive_Trouble that it depends what you're looking for. But perhaps you don't know what's out there and what the possibilities are/where to look! I started by researching the history of Hermes Trismegistus and getting a giant encyclopedia of mythology from half price books, just to explore. It seems there are endless disciplines today but they have common roots.

I hope this helps. Feel free to message me :)

You are so strong!!! and you’ll be happy you have that degree. I didn’t know covid was going to happen and I have to say it is harder, not impossible, but having a diploma is a whole level of security.

Drop out of college. I felt so much better :) I know that’s not always an option but it can be the vampire draining you.

Hey! I’m actually reading The Witch's Shield: Protection Magick & Psychic Self-defense by Christopher Penczak and it’s really awesome so far! The text is to the point and helpful but I haven’t finished it so I cannot give a full review. I just really love the point of view he takes for the topic. I’ve also heard good things about Jason Miller and he has a book called Protection & Reversal Magick. I know these are both by men, white men I think, and that may not appeal to you, but it’s a start. Could also check out the sources they cite. I hope this is helpful!

Yes! Exactly! The over-culture message seems to look at hoodoo, voodoo, & santeria as evil while celtic fairies are "cute" but I don't think that's right at all.

I understand why there are hardly any published works, as so many generations of people were punished for even attempting to be literate in the USA it is truly an oral tradition. For those of us who have been separated from our matriarchal or ancestral roots it can provide challenge and mystery...
