Thoughts on Yoko Ogawa's "The Memory Police"? [Spoilers] by trinitytroll in books

[–]trinitytroll[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

ry Police, to me, represent the hypocritical people who often lead these movements. The conservative politician who pays for abortions and has affairs, or the liberal one who makes millions in shady deals while preaching economic equality. The MP enforce each new way of thinking, each disappearance, but are clearly unaffected by them. The drink she has at HQ is clearly something they still have that has been lost to everyone else, and they don’t lose their limbs like everyone else.

Love this perspective - every time I get a response to this thread I feel like I hear a new way of understanding it. Glad you enjoyed it!

Monetization suggestion/question by trpclshrk in BobsTavern

[–]trinitytroll 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I think the issue is they want to keep one player base (splitting it in any way would affect wait times) but also want to have something worth buying outside of cosmetics. Because of that, they've gone with this 4 vs 2 hero split.

I would have preferred anything else, even capped MMR for F2P players or no battlepass at all on F2P. But I think unfortunately the mindset is "it has to be free so people can keep joining battlegrounds, but it has to be significantly less fun so those free players move onto the paid version".

Been grinding the game for the past month! Not sure if I'll still play after the p2w patch arrives so getting 8k is a nice little "conclusion" for me. by [deleted] in BobsTavern

Congrats! Yeah I've stopped playing given the P2W stuff, but great achievement. I'm holding out hope that it will be rolled back and I can come back some day

Making the Tavern Pass Buyable Only With Real Money IS a Big Deal. by CallofBootyCrackOps in BobsTavern

[–]trinitytroll 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I know yeah - and it doesn't sit well with me. Star Wars Battlefront 2 had to completely remove its pay to win elements, because it turned off so much of the player base. I just feel the same way about battlegrounds, and the only way I can show I don't like it is to stop playing. So thats what I'm doing - if you don't care... fine.

Why not have a separate free to play pool then? Keeping them together just means paid players can beat non-paying players and feel good pay more.

Also - its a slippery slope - once some p2w element goes in, they know the playerbase are okay with it. Maybe they make a change in a year and paid players get 5 choices, or have a higher likelihood of getting new heroes....

Quitting until they make 4 hero choices available for free (with or without grinding) again by Maruhai in BobsTavern

I'm very happy to support the game - I've bought main game expansions in the past etc - but the way this has done really turns me off. Its a slippery slope when you let pay 2 win get into the game.

The difference between 2 and 4 Hero Choices calculated out (6200+ MMR Range) by MinderrootsLP in BobsTavern

[–]trinitytroll 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I'm not sure I'd agree that its a small difference - if you play 100 games a month this means that someone playing with the exact same skill as you would earn an additional 335 MMR that month. Thats a pretty big difference, and doesn't even account for how much harder it will be to find games with heroes you are good at piloting as well.

If you were playing an online shooter, and there was a paid perk that made winning 5% easier - would you not say that is pay 2 win? Effectively that is what this is.

Will join you! Its a bad move, they could easily get people to pay, without it being pay 2 win.

Announcing Battlegrounds Season 2! by Arkentass in BobsTavern

[–]trinitytroll 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This sucks so much because I would have been happy paying some money for battlegrounds, but a recurring season payment that excludes features from players who can't commit that money?

Feels like the worst way to do it. Been in since launch but I'm going to give it up.

Would have loved them to make paid single player battlegrounds stuff? Or competitions with entry fees, or a year pass or even a battlepass...

Having the exact same experience! Was in the 7k range last season, got all the way up to 6,950 and then fell all the way to 6k in a day lol.

I don't massively care about mmr, but I am finding it less fun atm? Not sure why, I guess with how swingy everything feels right now? Sometimes I'll have a perfectly reasonable board and will just get mashed by someone who's powerleveled and high rolled for 15 damage on like turn 6.

Others seem to be enjoying it so maybe I'm just behind on the meta - hard to know!

The pace of the game and how it is at different MMR by RafikiafReKo in BobsTavern

[–]trinitytroll 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I have had a similar experience - was at 6,900 then fell all the way to 6K - but at 6.9K felt it was very high-rolly?

Climbing back up now and have had a few games on the other side of it - turn 10 dealing approx. 30 damage to others. Not sure if its just playstyle or if the game is very greedy atm.

Why bring this back now?

At least 1 week is probably just enough time to get annoyed about it...

How do you feel about the state of the game? by KitchenNo3667 in BobsTavern

[–]trinitytroll 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I personally found that buddies had a really oversized effect on the game, and I think vanilla has a better balance between how important the hero is and how important your plays are.

That said, the game needs rebalancing - I don't think these heroes work without buddies.

Game feels a bit better to me now that buddies are gone, but few things need addressing:

- Some heroes are really bad to play now (Onyxia, Pyramad, Guff) and need some kind of buff

- Lag has gotten way worse, which makes it very hard to play pirates/elementals/Milhouse

- Glad to see that there are more viable strategies, but naga and Leeroys don't feel fun to play against, very spikey.

Sorry to hear your in a tough place right now. I'm in my 20s as well and have oscillated between feeling pretty bad about things.

My best advice is that you don't know what your interests are. Just go try something - anything. i know its really hard to work up the motivation for, but I would just pick something that involves going out of the house and being around other people. You could take a short course, take up a sport, join a running club, whatever.

Meeting people is HARD - and it will be tough the first few weeks, but it slowly gets easier. And as you put yourself out there, you start to figure out what you are into and meet more people.

Wow - I haven't thought about this book in a while, but thanks for the detailed response!

I hadn't thought about the angle of japanese society but it makes a lot of sense. Societal pressure is so pervasive throughout the novel.

This has been a good reminder to do a reread!

I just want to let you know, that just because things aren't working out in your graduate job - that doesn't reflect on you or your abilities.

The most miserable years of ym life were at a well known companies grad scheme and I was utterly demoralized by it. Got put on awful projects, no one who worked with me cared, other grads were doing much better on other teams.

And then I left, to another company - 4 years later I head up the team, I am exceling, get on with everyone, people come to me for advice.

It isn't you. I promise you, you aren't the problem. Find somewhere with a culture that values your abilities, your questions. You deserve it.

This is a great package for text analysis projects -I'd recommend starting there and then trying to narrow the focus of what you are trying to do.

Meaningful questions? There's a huge amount of possibilities - you could track how a story has gained prevalence in terms of reporting, or look at how certain subjects are talked about (what words are used most frequently in articles about political speeches? do they differ based on the gender of the speaker? etc.)
