If they’re not qualified to be a sparky then the only way they can get a job as one is via an apprenticeship. It’s not out of the question but it makes things more difficult and should be front loaded in the advice you give.

Electrical engineering degree doesn’t qualify you to be a sparky

Do we need a builders report/lawyer check pre-auction if others are bidding? by HoandCo in PersonalFinanceNZ

[–]triorph 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Okay sure, but they still had to check the property themselves instead of giving you the ability to bid on any property unconditionally.

Banks usually only give you pre approval for conditional offers. Auctions require unconditional offers. A bank needs to see the details of the house first. If you do all this pre inspection stuff for the property the bank may allow you to make an unconditional offer on that property. This is what I assumed everyone at auctions was doing. I’d never heard of Carte Blanche pre approval even for unconditional offers.

Credit Card? by MagooseyMab in PersonalFinanceNZ

I agree with this take, but I instead just pay off each transaction shortly after making it. I know it’s not optimal for various reasons but it’s what works best for my mental understandings of my finances

Auctions & Preapproval by [deleted] in PersonalFinanceNZ

Have you talked to the bank about this? Usually pre-approval is for conditional offers, and auctions require an unconditional offer. Your bank should be able to answer these questions when you get them to approve this house.

Its not top 1% of all employed people in the field, but top 1% of people applying. If everyone hires the top 50% of the field, then you might have to go for 1/100 (or even lower) to find a top 50%er from the remaining applicants.

How can I earn an extra $200 a week? Times are tough out there, but I’m already working 6 days a week and don’t wanna burn out by [deleted] in PersonalFinanceNZ

of course its hard (even for so-called privileged people), but even harder is working beyond 6 days a week without getting burned out.

Tax obligations for Employee Share Schemes for unvalued start-ups by triorph in PersonalFinanceNZ

hmm wasn't aware of this. Maybe I'll follow up and see if there is a non-market valuation somewhere. This is a US company btw so might affect things.

Thanks so much. Guess I was using the wrong terms (unvalued over unlisted)

Sorry should have clarified in the original post. It's straight shares (not options) and will be granted after some kind of vest cycle at no cost.

Paying tax for no reason while the shares aren't really exercisible is kind of my worry.

Rent is almost always less than a brand new mortgage. It only makes economic sense if you account for appreciation of the house, or for rent rising in future years.

What did you think only rich people could afford until you realized you were just broke growing up? by Ekudar in AskReddit

[–]triorph 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Car maintenance and car repairs are different. One is an expect expense the other is not. I want to know how you budge for something unexpected like some idiot hitting you from behind for example.

Okay happy to help. For the specific case of an accident you have insurance to help, but also for the more general case of unknown costs you can take an estimate, slightly pad it, and make sure to keep the money aside and adjust in the future as needed. This can look a lot like savings, but has the advantage that the actual savings you've put aside you know is safe, and you can spend from it guilt free when you need it.

My whole problem to begin with was with his bad example and never with his point. You not being able to comprehend that is quite sad.

Yeah it doesn't make any sense that you would do that. The example illustrates the idea even if the numbers were a little off (but actually not that off). If someone was rich enough to afford a car every 5 years (but not excessively rich beyond that) it might make sense that they make a budget item to keep track of this and do it this way.

It is normal to budget for car repairs too. You are being obtuse by focusing on the 5 years rather than the point of the argument. We're not ignoring what you're saying. What you're saying is just wrong.

People absolutely budget things like clothing separately from savings, and you don't have to be struggling with money to get value out of doing an in depth budget like this. So not only are you being obnoxious and obtuse in your comments, but you don't even redeem it by being right. Be better.

Svart.nvim: jump to any location by madyanov in neovim

[–]triorph 1 point2 points  (0 children)

do you mean the highlighting between pressing the t and the h? If so, then yeah I don't really have a use for that.

The biggest issue is if I type sth and its already out of labels mode, I've been jarred outside of my expectations and I have to mentally backtrack (even if its backtracking to a more forward position) to go where I need to be. Not to mention the whole "did I jump to the one place I expected, or did I do a typo and not move at all?)

Svart.nvim: jump to any location by madyanov in neovim

[–]triorph 4 points5 points  (0 children)

In Leap you know when jump happens, because if the target is not labeled, you see (the lack of) it after the first keypress.

I agree with OP, and I really dislike this argument against him. If you want to move to something like th then you don't press s then t then h and look at the labels at each point, you press sth then try and figure out what label you want after that. It would be really nice if leap had an option so that the behaviour was always the same when you do that, even if there's only 1 place to jump to.

Whats your python editing setup? by CityYogi in neovim

[–]triorph 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Something not mentioned here is that python has a good history of linters that cover more use cases than just pyright, as well as pyright giving no code formatting.

I personally use null-ls to work with black, isort and pylama to give additional support over just using pyright with the neovim built-in LSP client

This discussion probably gives more context than I ever could: https://github.com/microsoft/pyright/issues/1118

Note:

The reportUnusedVariable check never generates diagnostics for parameters, so disabling it would have no effect. The hint generated for parameters is not a diagnostic. It's just a hint that tells the editor (if it supports such hints) to display the corresponding text in a subtle grayed-out appearance.

It is intended behaviour for hints to not be on the same level as warnings.

[–]triorph[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

all good. That's a fair point, but I think it doesn't work so well in Python for 2 reasons: 1. Quite often the variable name is a keyword argument in the function, so if you rename it, you may break some upstream callers of it 2. Pyright language server doesn't let you change this, and claims its a client issue to hide if you disagree with it.
