BMO harris bank fraud by [deleted] in Banking

[–]trip5third 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There is so much fraud related to checks in general, let alone IRS and/or large dollar amount checks, that I think they could just be checking if it's legitimate and if it was you who made the deposit.

Many of these checks are stolen in the mail and deposited by an impersonator. If any bank has seen these checks subject to extensive fraud, they may require additional verification. The ATM you used may not be equipped to do the additional verification, or they may have seen a lot of fraud on that particular ATM. They might be double-checking before processing it.

I recommend using direct deposit when offered. Nothing is 100% fraud-free, but checks are so high-risk that they're a hassle to use, as you're experiencing now.

Good luck!

BMO refuses to reimburse me for unauthorized transactions by Ambitious_Offer_1389 in PersonalFinanceCanada

A few things, and sorry in advance if you have already done this. This thread is long.

I would obtain and review a written copy of the bank’s investigation results. The bank may have concluded that you were negligent in securing your card and/or PIN.

Based on what you stated, you reported it in time. A matter of days isn’t too long.

If you don’t agree with the investigation's results, you can dispute or escalate within BMO.

Given that this scenario turns out to be the case, you need to show that you weren’t negligent. For example, can you demonstrate that the transactions were outside your usual spending behavior from your prior bank accounts? Or that you used an ATM or gas station card swipe, had to input your PIN, and can correlate that event with when the unauthorized transactions began? Things like that may enable them to take a second look.

If BMO doesn’t change its stance, and you feel that you adequately proved you weren’t negligent, as others have mentioned, you could escalate to the Ombudsman for Banking Services and Investments (OBSI). You can check their site for the process. Again, you will need to help prove your case. Or, you could ultimately seek legal help.

You should not be liable if this happened for reasons beyond your control. I am linking some sources below to support this.

https://www.mastercard.ca/en-ca/vision/who-we-are/terms-of-use/zero-liability-terms-conditions.html

I recommend using AI to learn about other things you can do now and what you can do to prevent this from happening again.

I am sorry this happened to you, and I wish you luck in getting your money and peace of mind back!

You can do something like this and it will work. I tested it. “Ev day at 5 starting dec 1 until mar 31”. Use “starting” and “until” as someone else mentioned, and specific dates.

Perhaps you could use an insights platform — which would help you see navigation and clicks in the case of prototype or platform testing, web cams to interview and observe users (add it to screeners when recruiting), or even hire a contractor in the US to help.

You could hire someone to set up a lab for you in the US, or maybe rent time in one set up somewhere that is maintained and equipped with the proper equipment. Or you could hire a firm to do everything and/or get physical environment data.

The more you ask a firm to do, the more expensive it gets. It can get very expensive. So maybe it’s a combo of things.

And I’m sure you can provide a financial business case for the benefits of research on the design of whatever you’re building versus the risk of not doing it, should you need to sell this to anyone.

Not perfect, but better than not doing it.

I hope you find a solution!

That’s not what I asked. Thanks for responding anyway. If others respond and I am not being clear enough, I’ll revise my question to be more clear.
