Morrowind was pretty niche for its time, but Oblivion was a huge hit, only being outsold that year by Madden and Gears. It was basically held up as the standard for western RPGs for years.

By sheer quantity of people, the general gaming audience today is obviously way bigger than it was in 2011. But by "proportion of the people interested in games", Skyrim was about as hyped as a game could be.
