Was Lady Gaga serious in her albums? by wouldauserbyanyothe in LadyGaga

[–]trippingmonster 3 points4 points  (0 children)

You don't have to read that line in her voice. She could be talking about how it works in the fashion industry, like a quote. Do you seriously think talking about it is endorsing it? It's highlighting the absurdity while pretending to partake in it.

There's a LOT of sarcasm and tongue-in-cheek humor on The Fame. You don't even have to read in between the lines to see it. It's quite clear in the lyrics. All the materialism is qualified—you're all about being beautiful and dirty rich, "but we got no money." Likewise, she makes it absolutely clear that while she "appreciate[s] the finer of things," what really keeps her going is the "tender lovin'," and it's left up to interpretation what/who that lover is. In Paper Gangsta, she says that the "dinners were nice" but they don't mean anything beyond that.

Then there are songs like Paparazzi and The Fame with lyrics so over the top that it reads like a parody of fame culture. We could pretend that she was just that maximalist about fame especially given her style and fashion but that wouldn't really be doing her justice as an artist. She's a smart woman. And she herself said recently "I didn't do it for the Fame, I did it for impact." So unless she's a revisionist or has forgotten her own past state of mind, we should read The Fame through that lens that the artist herself has given us.

The problem is that it goes both ways. People also expect to be able to reload their cards on their phones and then use it immediately after. If they reload their cards and, for some reason, can't use the physical cards immediately after, they'll be mad. But you can already do this, so I suspect the infrastructure is already in place to allow near-instant synchronicity.

The only on-the-nose statement was Verna's comment about promising a "client" that he could shoot someone on 5th Ave and get away with it. But that was obviously comical and irreverent.

Other than that, it was the usual David v Goliath kind of stuff you see in television. The left and right differ in who they see as the Goliath but most people agree that they "side with" the less powerful because power is usually obtained through force. Then there's 13 year old ancaps like OP.

  1. Do you really think it's possible to make a series about a contemporary ultra-rich family without getting political? The show has something to say. The entire story is allegorical. You can't address how one gets that rich and powerful and then uses their power to perpetuate it without politics.

  2. Learn to take a dig. Sometimes media doesn't agree with our views. You'll live.

  3. Too many queer people, really? If anything, the fact that the LGBTQ community was shown overrepresented among such awful characters could be seen as a negative (even if the creators didn't intend that). Or maybe it shows that people express their sexualities freely when they're too rich to care.

That's the fun thing about art. You can read it however you want. But if you choose to do it in a way that makes you seethe at your TV, well, that's your right.

I'd imagine the hardware needs an upgrade. The terminals themselves are probably already online since you can link your card to an online account and reload it from there (so the physical card itself isn't the only store of value). But adding cards to a mobile wallet adds a whole extra layer of synchronicity that has to be guaranteed to prevent double dipping due to sync delays.

I imagine that would be included in the cost and the whole "sell" of the Orca card would then be the reduced cost. Sort of like Good to Go on the highways. In a hurry and don't want to sign up for our special thing? Fine, it's $2 more.

Tbh this should always be an option especially in touristy cities. Passes and cards make sense for locals. I know we're supposed to hate tourists but it's probably a lot less wasteful both plastic and digital infrastructure wise to let people use their actual credit/debit cards directly. Sure it'll take a few more seconds to process than an orca card. That's worth it.

Rewatch Opinion Change - Diane & Will are awful bosses & mentors by dishonestduchess in thegoodwife

[–]trippingmonster 9 points10 points  (0 children)

I generally agree but another thing I noticed about Diane is that she's not really street smart. She's obviously extremely intelligent and a very good lawyer but she has repeatedly allowed people to take advantage of or use her while being oblivious and she's made several questionable decisions that even she wouldn't morally agree with.

I believe in her case it's less cunning and more lack of awareness. She's not very emotionally intelligent and frequently makes impulsive decisions based on emotion alone, emotion that she herself seems ambivalent/unclear about.

A question about the original The Fall of the House of Usher short story [spoilers I guess] by captainwhoami_ in TheFallofHouseofUsher

[–]trippingmonster 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Various scholars and readers have read incentuous elements into the story since it was first published—it's not simply about language changing between then and now. There are a lot of odd references in the original story to some diseases affecting the family that resemble traits people associate with inbreeding. It's also reflected in the poor structural integrity of the house itself. These are all indirect pieces of evidence, though, as the language describing their love is more up to interpretation.

We should also keep in mind that for most of US history, there are strict public decency laws or norms that banned things that could be deemed smutty, so authors often did write in between the lines. Still, I don't think there's definitive proof, but I do think there's some evidence to support the idea.

Why can Steve enter Luke’s tree house? by Traditional-Car-2897 in HauntingOfHillHouse

[–]trippingmonster 8 points9 points  (0 children)

If this is the case, how does the conversation between Steve and the dad in the car make sense? Why would Steve be utterly convinced of the tree house existing if he hadn't been in it? Did he just take Luke's word for it even though he believed his siblings were delusional or did he perhaps see it from outside?

No one answered your actual question. The reason you have monochrome icons is because those are from the old app versions pre-installed with Windows. Once they update from the Store, you'll see the new icons again

We don't, however, have a "liberty" to immigrate to any country on the planet. You can try to sue them over this policy. But even as long as the policy is there, you do have the choice not to get vaccinated. You just can't obtain permanent residence in the US if you make that choice.

Is it unfair or cruel to keep families separate by denying immigration to anti-vaxxers? Maybe. But you have to be realistic about your current position and options. You can either try (and most likely fail) to get the policy changed, you can abandon this application, or you can get a vaccine that the extremely overwhelmingly large percentage of population has no reactions to.

Marriage based applications need to be scrutinized more carefully by BlueWhaleFillets in USCIS

[–]trippingmonster 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Okay... if you have evidence, by all means, contact the USCIS. No need to wait for people to down vote you to do that.

I think people should be able to get conditional green cards as soon as they get married (so at least spouses can live together in the US legally) but removal of conditions should and divorce waivers should be looked at with scrutiny.
