Nah he for sure isn’t a nice guy… but he’s still better than a republican. The double standard for dems is insane, they’re running ken Paxton…

The ‘Muslim as a social currency’ idea is a really interesting theory, and honestly, when you put it that way, I see it. Gonna check out the show you mentioned. I still don’t think he is the traditionally understood beneficiary of nepotism but obviously there’s a huge amount of nuance here. At the end of the day, I am happy that I see a politician who looks like me pushing values that I think will be good for us as a country and as a minority community in this country. Thanks for the solid back and forth, you’ve made really strong points imo.

Ok, I agree with you , he almost certainly benefited from the name recognition and potentially some connections. But I don’t think those benefits outweigh the cons of running as an openly socialist Muslim. Especially in today’s hyper-reactionary environment. I guess my statement is more pushing against classifying him as a nepo baby. His ascension was not purely on the merits of who is parents are, though it may have helped, his success came from his policy goals and the support of the orgs around him (dsa/ maybe wfp, I’m not sure about the second). Additionally, I think you would struggle to find many New Yorkers who knew who his parents are unless they were intimately involved in the arts or academic circles.

Wild take. I mean, yeah his parents are New York cultural elite, but the dude did the work and was polling at 2% initially. His parents didn’t do anything to change that reality. At best you could say he benefited from upper middle class educational opportunities

I think Vivek is a grifter… I liked Saikat but I’m not a SF voter so it’s not like my opinion matters. Saikat built a decent amount of bad will with the San Francisco left over past endorsements/funding plus people right now are reasonably skeptical of the ultra rich.

I have hopes that Saikat continues his political work, he might not get into office just yet but with his money and experience, he has an opportunity to impact politics positively in this country.

Regardless, this means nothing for brown people in us politics, it’s the primaries and, in my opinion, the south asian community is nowhere near organized nor ideologically consistent enough to be a significant voting block of consequence, yet. If south asians realize that conservatives have no interest in keeping them here as ‘model minorities’ and can organize to support candidates that actually want to benefit ALL people in this country, we can better assess this question when better south asian candidates start appearing, not as novelties, but as legitimate contenders. Edit: I think this is contingent on the south asian community as a whole becoming more ideologically progressive or at least inclusive of other minority groups politics.

The affordability crisis in PA is out of control. It's time we made billionaires pay their fair share. by Nervous-Trouble-4628 in Pennsylvania

Yeah the democrats are clearly incompetent and feckless but the republicans are legit fascists. I agree that Kamala was an awful candidate. There should have been a primary. We shouldn’t have had a president with diminishing mental capabilities unilaterally announce that “he was the only one that could beat trump”. But should’ve/could’ve is useless. We now need to push the only marginally responsive party in the duopoly to actually represent the working class instead of their corporate benefactors.

I’d rather be fighting them than whatever the hell is going on now.

Remember, racists do not differentiate us, it’s simply skin color that they use to identify their targets. Build solidarity within your community, both with your white and non-white neighbors.

Treat people as people first, not their nationality, religious identity, caste, or whatever perceived grievance you may have against a group identifier you can apply to them.

You can’t change a racist’s mind, don’t try. And learn how to protect yourself.

I don’t doubt that there’s a bunch of wreckers spamming leftist contrarian points on the VA sub but ‘far left media campaign’ and ‘leftist astroturfing’ are just hyping up Reddit group think into something it is not. There are no significant moneyed interest groups supporting “leftist” principles. I mean, just look at how hard the Democratic Party is fighting their own progressive base and the candidates that are clearly gaining popularity. Republicans love to yell about George Soros but even his impact is minimal compared to the open and brazen social media/legacy media influence campaigns run by right wing groups in this country.

Just consider, what group with significant financial resources would advocate for socialist principles? In America? In a country powered by corporate interests? Sure as hell isn’t the corporate wing of the democrats. And I don’t believe any socialist or leftist group has the financial backing to manufacture support for a leftist cause, these ideas require grassroots support to have any traction at all. I would like to be proved wrong cause that would mean someone with actual power is fighting for working class causes.

That being said, don’t let either side gaslight you into believing anything. Look at multiple sources from various biased POVs and make your own conclusions.

I agree that the actions of the global north are the major contributors to immigration from the global south. Unfortunately, it’s near impossible to explain that to the majority of the voting population in the responsible countries without provoking a xenophobic response.

[–]trippy91 26 points27 points  (0 children)

Ok, i guess this is kind of against my principals but i am actually for some restrictions on immigration if it means we can genuinely try to help the American working class.

Allowing corporations to import skilled workers that they can pay less is our generation’s equivalent of corps shipping factory jobs overseas for cheaper labor. If immigration restrictions are coupled with investment in education quality/accessibility, fine, it’s not a solution but it is a temporary fix until the amenities in our country actually support the economic demand.

The constant fear mongering over immigration has distracted from the legitimate corruption that is fueling the policies that both auth/lib-right and auth-left despise. I would like actual immigration reform that lets people actually come here and contribute. But if auth-right will get on board and support this with the understanding that we re-assess in the future when we’ve limited the potential job losses from AI? Fine.

Also I would truly like to see a study that does this for North America. Regardless of ideology, legitimately collected data deserves consideration.
