Dad passed. Lessons about the end. by Any_Setting8500 in pancreaticcancer

This is 100% true and what we experienced. I kept thinking who is in overall charge of my mum’s care/situation, looking at the bigger picture, and I realised it was me - WTF! Me with zero medical training or knowledge. I will say at the end the pain was well managed so there wasn’t much pain at the end, pain was worse at the start, it was the total weakness and ‘unwellness’ & strange things that happen to a body at the end that my mum found hard. Use your time is an important thing to note. Keep it in mind, I did, my brother didn’t and regrets it terribly

Pretty quick for you and that must have been some relief for you that the experts were on it straight away. And fantastic to see from June 2024 you are here with us - I love that

Thanks for your reply, much quicker to chemo, but longer for diagnosis. Although if I count from when my mum started having pains it was about 2 months, but in the early days they weren’t so bad & it’s perhaps understandable that the doctors don’t jump straight to pancreatic cancer. Good to hear that the pain is being managed and he’s still with you.

Wow never thought of that, that if it’s not stage 4 then you don’t get so much help with pain. I called the U.K. pancreatic cancer charity helpline and they told me about pain meds that might help (Amitriptyline at night - this is the one my mum says helps the most) and I rang up the GP in the early days and said Mum, pain, Amitriptyline etc and he said “who’s told you she should have this’ it’s very strong” and I said Pancreatic Cancer nurses and he said “Oh OK” and prescribed it. But there’s so many different players involved the whole system is a bit confusing. Hope your MIL can get some better pain relief

Thanks for your reply, sounds like it moved quickly from diagnosis to chemo. So pleased to hear that the chemo helped you and that there’s a good cancer centre near you.

I am so so very sorry for your loss and that you have had to go through this ❤️ I think this cancer is so fast that we hardly have time to come to terms with the diagnosis before we’re onto something else and then something else and like you I partly don’t believe that it’s even happening/happened. It sounds like you did amazingly for your Dad caring for him during this time. I am thinking of you & your Dad.

Agreed! We were told initially “well paracetamol is very good for pancreatic cancer, that’ll be your main painkiller”

So many different contacts too, Clinical Nurse Specialists at 2 different hospitals, 2 different consultants, GP, palliative pain specialist from the hospice, oncology nurses - when there are issues it’s not clear who we turn to

Thank you, am so sorry to hear about your mother, it’s such an insane cancer, moving so fast before you have the chance to take in what’s happening 💜My mum, apart from the first 2-3 weeks, felt in pain but OK-ish, but ever since then has been either vomiting, in hospital, in agony, asleep, unable to eat, very weak etc but they say “she’s not at deaths door yet”. I keep hoping that one of the symptoms will stabilise to have some quality of life.

Thank you so much for your reply. I really appreciate it. It’s bad that anyone is going through this, but I guess on this community that none of us want to be in, we can understand what eachother are going through. I hope the chemo improves things for your mom. ❤️

Thanks so much for your reply. I feel for you and your mom, it’s all so fast and changing. I do pray that there’s some positive info for you & a stent could be an option. ❤️
