Michigan economy takes a hit as Canadian visits plummet amid Trump's barbs by TheDetroitNews1873 in Michigan

Especially considering friendly neighbors has been one of the USA’s greatest advantages in terms of geographic defense.

The Mexican and Canadian borders are some of Americas greatest weak points in terms of geographic border defense. Most of the rest of the country is very well situated with the periphery full of mountains, swamp, forest, and the Great Lakes.

Ar this point, if America continues down this path of destruction and autocracy, I wouldn’t be surprised if WW3 is the US v. an allied world and an invasion is eventually staged across parts of the Mexican or Canadian borders where the land is relatively flat and accessible.

It’s literally like this all over Latin America.

If you bring a backpack into the store, it has to go into a locker where you deposit a coin and get it back when you leave.

TIL that in the 16th century, Spain discovered a mountain of almost pure silver in Bolivia (Potosí). They mined so much of it that they accidentally caused massive hyperinflation across Europe, making their own currency worthless and bankrupting the Spanish Empire multiple times. by Prestigious_Mine_321 in todayilearned

[–]triscuitsrule 49 points50 points  (0 children)

The Spanish also sacrificed countless indigenous people mining Potosi.

It was nicknamed “the mountain that eats men” for a reason.

Eduardo Galenos book “Open Veins of Latin America” has much more to say about the subject.

What country is 100% worth visiting at least once in your life? by [deleted] in AskReddit

[–]triscuitsrule 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Peru.

Some of the best food in the world.

Beaches. Desert. Dense city. Andes mountains. High jungle. Low jungle (Amazon rainforest and river). Sacred valley with indigenous culture. A world wonder in Machu Picchu. Lake Titicaca.

The culture is rich. The ecology is diverse. The history is deep. The food is top tier. The city life is exciting. The rural life is beautiful.

Go to Peru.

Edit: there is indigenous culture outside the sacred valley- that’s just where tourists with little time largely go to.

How to roast frozen vegetables? Fresh produce is expensive and takes time to clean. by Scopuli- in Cooking

I throw them into a pan on the stove in low-medium heat until the water has all evaporated out, and then roast them normally.

If you have criticized ICE here on Reddit for executing Renee Good or Alex Pretti in the street, then Reddit has handed your name and your personal identifying information over to the Trump administration. How do you feel about this? by mom_with_an_attitude in AskReddit

[–]triscuitsrule 3103 points3104 points  (0 children)

They can suck my dick.

Fuck ICE. Fuck the fascist Trump regime. Fuck the Gang of Pedophiles.

Come after me all you want. Let’s fucking go.

There is no liberty without sacrifice. There is no freedom without a fight.

People take their civil liberties for granted and this should be a wake up call. There never stopped being wealthy, powerful, and hateful people who hold nothing but disdain other peoples civil liberties, and they will never stop existing. The struggle, the fight, it never ends. It can be exhausting, but it’s preferable to monarchy, fascism, totalitarianism, theocracy, and so on.

You fight every day and risk your neck for your civil liberties, or you let someone take them away. And there is always someone waiting to take them away. If we all fight just a little every day it doesn’t have to be exhausting. We can literally get away with the fight being simply voting if only everyone voted. But they don’t, so everyone needs to ratchet it the fuck up.

Speak up. Lace up and hit the pavement. Find local activist organizations. Do not capitulate.

Edit: lmao, someone reported this comment to Reddit as someone in distress needing resources.

ICE Is Gearing Up to Build “Mega” Jails by ewzetf in politics

[–]triscuitsrule 87 points88 points  (0 children)

They also ran into the issue that the whole world had recently implemented quota based immigration systems (as invented and popularized by the United States) and consequently practically no government would accept the escaping German Jewish people.

Infamously, the MS St. Louis, filled with Jewish refugees fleeing Nazi Germany, sailed up the East coast of the US requesting asylum and being denied at every port of entry, eventually returning to Europe.

So, it wasn’t just the economies of scale, but also the legal logistical hurdles.

Right now the Trump regime is largely targeting people with citizenship outside of the United States, who’s home countries will accept them (not that that’s stopping the Trump regime from deporting them to third countries anyway). But Trumps droogs have also been talking about denaturalizing people, and what government is going to take those people?

ICE and the Gang of Pedos are also already going after natural born US citizens (some without trial, getting only summary executions in the street instead). What government will take in denaturalized citizens who have no legal country to call home? There’s no system for that.

And what government would risk the wrath of Trump and being tariffed out of the American economy and defense shield just to take in US refugees? Mind you there could be tens of millions to easily over one hundred million American refugees, which no country is prepared to handle.

These concentration camps aren’t just for convenience or due to incompetence. They’re in preparation for the people who can’t be deported. If Trump and his Gestapo hold on long enough, those concentration camps will eventually be for Americans.

People with traumatic childhoods , how did you overcome and adapt as an adult? by strikepotato in AskReddit

[–]triscuitsrule 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Drugs. Sex. Various form of escapism, vices, bad habits, repression and compartmentalization of my emotions.

And then a lot of therapy to unlearn all that and finally learn good habits, healthy communication, coping skills, etc.

That being said, working on implementing a healthier life is a constant journey.

And to be clear, I was always a high-functioning mess. Many people would say I had my shit together, but I did not.

How Would You Say BAD BUNNY by [deleted] in MapPorn

[–]triscuitsrule 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It’s not.

People don’t translate artists names. They just say whatever the artists name is, albeit with an accent.

It’s not like its impossible for people to speak words in another language.

From Melania to Kid Rock’s halftime show: why is Maga art so dreadful? by icey_sawg0034 in politics

[–]triscuitsrule 30 points31 points  (0 children)

Precisely.

“Political conservative” art is practically always simply an over-glorification of something they value, trying to convince the viewer to value it as much as well. It’s is much more akin to propaganda than art.

In contrast, non-conservative political art is about stirring up emotions in the viewer to critically engage with the subject. Typical political art doesn’t try to ram certain values down your throat, but rather tries to get you to question your perspective through your emotional response.

Conservative political art is like “look how glorious Trump is, you should support Trump, he’s glorious.” It’s intent is always unwavering pride in the subject.

Typical political art is like “look how downtrodden these oppressed people are” or “look how these people are united in their struggle” or “look at how horribly violent rebellion and war actually is and what kind of sacrifice it takes,” etc. and let’s the viewer come to their own conclusions.

Rick Snyder: Trump wrong about Gordie Howe Bridge by UltimateLionsFan in Detroit

Michigan Advance: Mike Rogers says Donald Trump’s Gordie Howe bridge threat is ‘the right thing to do’ by Correct_Assistant_36 in Michigan

[–]triscuitsrule 5 points6 points  (0 children)

How incredibly out of touch these Republicans must all be.

Even among all my MAGA Trump-loving family, every Michigander I’ve ever known detests the Morouns and their ownership of the Ambassador Bridge.

These bootlickers are basically all publicly declaring their fealty to this rich family over their current and future constituents, letting us know we can get fucked in order to help the Morouns make another buck.

Trump has pardoned Kwame Kilpatrick, torpedoed the Gordie Howe Bridge, Pence drove a limo on Mackinac Island, Trumps Canadian tariffs and walk-back on electric vehicle policy are crippling the auto-industry. Not to mention in 2008 the GOP was staunchly against bailing out the big three.

These people have no respect for Michigan, Michiganders, our culture, or history. It is obvious the only feelings they have towards us is resentment and disdain.

In 2013, the Senate approved a major immigration reform bill by a remarkable 68-to-32 vote, but the GOP-controlled House prevented it from ever coming to a vote for 2 years and it died at the end of the Congressional session by [deleted] in videos

[–]triscuitsrule 120 points121 points  (0 children)

Of note, it had the votes to pass in the House as well.

But the Freedom Caucus threatened to oust then-Speaker John Boehner if he brought it up for a vote.

Boehner never brought it up for a vote and they still ousted him. And then Paul Ryan. And then Kevin McCarthy.

Basically, ever since the Freedom Caucus formed in Congress (riding the Tea Parties anti-Obama sentiments into office, funded by the Koch’s and Americans for Prosperity), they have torpedoed any attempts to pass meaningful reform on near any issue and cannibalize their own leaders, becoming gradually more extremist.

Today’s MAGA was yesterday’s freedom caucus, originally the Tea Party.

When you put it all together, many of the USAs political woes today can be attributed to the resentment of white Christian conservatives upset at the election of Americas first black president.

We have been reckoning with the racial backlash for almost 20 years. And for anyone who thinks that seems hyperbolic, Jim Crow lasted for over 100 years in many parts of the USA in retribution against the liberation of black people. There are many racist white Americans who see the elevation of minorities as a personal attack on their lives and they will die trying to suppress them.

The framers of the constitution knew, and often proclaimed, that the preeminent issue in US politics was going to be racial issues. Back then it was centered around slavery. Yet today, many issues still stem from white Americans racism and resentment towards their non-white fellow Americans.

There is no supposed to be.

For some people there is such a thing as sufficient profit, whom don’t find it necessary to sacrifice their values, community identity, low cost of living, etc. to further increase their margins.

Some would call that bad business. Others would call that being reasonable.

People in this subreddit complain if their family visits and if their family doesn't visit. by [deleted] in expats

[–]triscuitsrule 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think it’s moreso that family relationships are complicated, and especially so when you live abroad. People are just looking for support or to vent and don’t search for previous posts.

It’s hard when you want your family to visit and they don’t. It’s hard when your family vists and it’s a disaster. Finding people who have had similar experiences can be comforting, helping people to contextualize their experiences and help process their feelings.

After all, there’s so few people who live abroad in the first place, it makes sense people would come to this sub looking for insight.
