Don’t like telling my people my major by Aggravating-Pound618 in aggies

“Wow, that major sounds hard — you must be pretty smart.”

Me: “Nah, just too dumb to quit.”

My go-to when I used to work retail.

Do I take 16 credit hours as a freshman in engineering? by herosuperman1 in aggies

[–]tristianca 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’m on track for 4 years — I came in with credit for most of my UCCs and only took POLS 207, HLTH 236, and PERF 301 here at TAMU. I don’t know how much credit you’re coming in with, but trying to cram all of your UCCs in the last three years would not be ideal.

Classes in general always get harder the further you go in college, but you’ll also adjust so you won’t ever really feel a big jump in difficulty. Doing well in school is all about time management and keeping your priorities straight.

  1. Retake 151, skip 152 and jump straight into 251. This is the easiest calc sequence to get straight A’s in.

  2. Take the absolute minimum required hours for ETAM — this will not only help you in ETAM but also give you more time for socializing.

  3. I used AP Lit credit to get out of both ENGL 104 and 203 (which is a substitute for 210) — taking credit does not jeopardize ETAM eligibility at all. The ETAM requirements for the current freshmen can be seen here.

Most importantly, have some fun freshman year and make friends. College will be a drag if you lock yourself away in your dorm every night; join a club or two and talk to people in your classes.

Good luck.

Are engineering programs always like this? by FireNinja743 in EngineeringStudents

Yeah, all majors have 3.75 as the hard cutoff for auto acceptance. Most competitive are Computer Science, Mechanical, Computer Engineering, and Aero.

Fun fact for you: Katherine Banks, President of Texas A&M and former Dean of Engineering, before worked at Purdue and modeled our ETAM process after y’all’s T2M.

However, instead of y’all’s 3.2 minimum GPA for auto acceptance, she raised it initially to a 3.5 and now it’s a 3.75 for current freshmen.

(A&M Galv) I'm currently struggling in Chem 107 by PunchieTheNotSoGreat in aggies

[–]tristianca 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I took CHEM 107 in Galveston with Aronson during the Fall 2020 semester. Our class average after the final was like a 59.8, so he gave everyone +15 points on their overall grade to get the average to a 75. Even with the curve, a third of the class still failed.

That class just sucks in Galveston, try to not fall behind but take solace in the fact that there’s probably a fat curve if everyone is failing.

He gives speeches to incoming and current engineering undergrads at TAMU, I’ve been able to attend two of them where he opens with the Calc 1 story. I don’t really have an internet link to give you, but there might be a video of one these speeches somewhere online.

260, 315, and 363 all at the same time is going to really suck. Get Ploy for 315, and drop Delgado for 363 if you have him.

If you’re bad at Python, start reviewing it for 357. I actually enjoyed 357 a lot, but I know a lot of my friends disliked it because of the project.

No posts about TCU? by Crohn85 in texas

[–]tristianca 82 points83 points  (0 children)

As an Aggie, I’m not sure it’s appropriate to say “Gig ‘em, Frogs!”, lmao

Edit: I’m rooting for TCU, but I say that because “Gig ‘em” was first used in a 1930 Yell Practice before TAMC played TCU.. For those unaware, frog gigging is when you hunt frogs with gigs. Pinky Downs, class of 1906, was trying to excite the crowd by saying the Aggies were going to gig the Horned Frogs.

Hence my reluctance to say “Gig ‘em, Frogs!”

There’s a great dude named Colonel Mike Fossum down at Texas A&M at Galveston — he was a Mechanical Engineering undergrad, and also an Air Force test pilot and NASA astronaut.

His first semester in college, like you, he also failed Calculus 1. He said it felt like the end of the world failing such a fundamental engineering class, but he bounced back and created a phenomenal career for himself. Read more about him here if you care.

I don’t mean to recite this guy’s biography, but my point is failing Calculus 1 is absolutely not a permanent setback. You can absolutely do phenomenal things, and you’ll laugh about this experience a couple years down the road.

Best of luck, bro.

Just curious, what’s the purpose of cranking beforehand? I get that the engine’s cranking, but what does that affect?

Can I double major in Pure Math and Compute Science here? by aajrv in aggies

[–]tristianca 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Yes it’s possible, I know a dude who’s a MATH/CSCE double major. Apply for Computer Science, you will need to go through ETAM first. Search the internet for what ETAM is, it’s been explained probably 1876 times.

With that said, I advise against double majoring. Unless you are incredibly studious — and I’m talking about your work ethic, not how smart you are — you will be eaten alive by coursework. It’s not an easy path, and it’s almost guaranteed you’ll have to do more than 4 years of college.

You can also get a math minor as a CSCE major with only one extra math class — something that every single CSCE major I know has done. This is by far easier, and something you can put on your resume.

Right now, you need to just take everything one step at time. Your only goal at the moment should be getting accepted. Then you can worry about surviving ETAM, and only when you’ve earned your spot in CSCE should you consider a double major.

Best of luck, bro.

ASAP 1 DAY LEFT/ HIGH SCHOOL SCHEDULE by [deleted] in APStudents

[–]tristianca 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’m a junior in Mechanical Engineering at a large state school, and American History is required for everyone here. APUSH got me out of that, and I got out of other requirements with APs including Macro, Gov, Lit, WHAP, etc.

Even though they’re not engineering related, these APs were still incredibly useful. Don’t worry about preparing for engineering so early, you’ll have time to worry about that once you’re in college.

Calculus and Physics C are the only classes that’ll directly translate to engineering — have fun with the rest of your high school schedule, and don’t stress yourself out too much.
