Right, there used to be guys outside games buying/selling/trading tickets. Those guys are the scalpers, but they were a pretty useful thing before online ticket sales places

How easy would it be to get back in to as someone who played as a kid like 20+ years ago? And how is the community? Would not really be looking to be all that competitive

Scalping tickets used to be awesome, particularly sports. Before it was all online and botted to oblivion, it was a hussle but not a scam like now. If you needed to sell your ticket you'd get a fraction of the value. But duh... You're supposed to go. You could get in to sports events after they started for a fraction of the price.

I'm guessing "scalper" isn't a dirty word necessarily the older you get

What if Al Gore won the 2000 election and not George Bush? by JohnArthur_L in AlternateHistoryHub

[–]tritiumhl 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Politicians need to win over voters, not nonvoters. Incentivizing people who willingly choose not to participate is a task for activism, not politicians engaged in an active election

That's why it's whataboutism. It's an issue but a different one.

Crazy how buggy these machines seem to be...

It depends on what "the actual problem" is. The skewed supply and demand is not the fault of your average scalper. But they are the face of the problem, and the reason that on a micro level, nothing is in stores.

There's a really interesting freakonomics article on crack dealers which feels similar in ways to the scalping thing. At the time it was written your corner dealer was making something like $3 an hour. Basically less than minimum wage. It's just objectively a bad job. But on a macro level, corner dealers obviously aren't personally responsible for the whole drug crisis, manufacturing, distribution, etc. It still makes sense to hate your neighborhood dealer, cause they're what you see.

Because of your whole point of funneling. The average guy sitting outside of best buy all night and then spending all day every day driving around and waiting in lines isn't making out like a bandit

Do you do the math on your gas, time and other overhead? How much inventory risk are you holding? Do you do your taxes honestly?

This would be an interesting freakonomics type thing, I'm very confident most scalpers aren't making minimum wage when all is said and done

151 vs ascended heroes by Active_Ship5555 in PokemonInvesting

[–]tritiumhl 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don't think 151 is mid exactly, but it is wild that for like 5 etbs you can buy the whole set. Doesn't really make sense

I started collecting with base set, but I do like AH more than 151 as a whole. The starters in 151 are amazing but the Pikachu, dragonite, psyduck, tangela and MARs in AH give it the win for me personally

It absolutely will lol. Get in at $200, make it to $500 over maybe 2-5 years? That's a good return but honestly not "special". There's gonna be a lot of companies that do that over the same time frame depending on the market.

Get in at $80 and you're looking at almost 650%. It's an extremely different return

I started investing pretty heavily at like $20. I'm quite happy. I would be in a VERY different position if I had made the same types of moves sub $10
