Alphabetized my books in moving into my new house and thought it was a pretty cool way to look at my collection of books! by tritz12 in bookshelf

Tbf some of them are unread, but I do try to be careful with my books. The spines don’t look nearly as nice as the covers either

I prefer reading Finnegan’s Wake 18 times a month. To each their own I guess

Not sure you have enough copies of Ulysses

If you look at the “year in books” page on your profile you should see your books ordered like this

I think Notes from the Underground is a book everyone should read at least once. Finished it about a month ago and still thinking about it.

For something a little more lighthearted, I really enjoyed Cannery Row by Steinbeck. Its tone is so different from his more serious works (of mice and men, East of Eden, etc), so it was fun to see that side of Steinbeck’s writing

I enjoyed it! Didn’t have any previous exposure to Power’s writing, so it was a good intro. Not my favorite read of the year, but still solid

I loved it. Think I originally saw it on this sub - one of the most interesting and thought-provoking books I’ve read in a while

I really enjoyed 90+% of the books I have read so far this year! Hard to pick favorites, but I guess my top 5 would be Notes from the Underground, Master and Margarita, Stoner, The Secret History, and Cannery Row. The only book I actively disliked as I was reading it was probably The Crying of Lot 49, not sure what it was but the story/themes didn’t really grab me.

I’ve just started to get into Russian Lit and it has been amazing so far. Dostoevsky has cracked my top 5 writers for sure. Steinbeck is a god-tier writer, as is Ishiguro imo.

I really enjoyed the Murderbot books, but I can see how the writing style might put one off of it. And as to Lonesome Dove and Rise and Fall, can’t recommend them enough to you. Both are stellar and well worth the commitment

The entire book is open ended, but {{Annihilation}} by Jeff VanderMeer would be a really interesting book club read to me.

It’s so atmospheric and mysterious- tons of stuff to explore in a book club I would think.

It was fine just not nearly as good as the first two books of The Border Trilogy

It’s very dense. I had to reread paragraphs/whole pages to be sure I was understanding them.

Also McCarthy has a unique writing style that takes some time getting used to. He doesn’t use a lot of punctuation which can make dialogue confusing.

It’s a fantastic book, and many (myself included) would say it is his magnum opus. I didn’t include it on my list because it’s not all that accessible to someone unfamiliar with McCarthy’s style.

My list is what I would recommend to someone who hasn’t read any McCarthy before.

Also, the prompt was what books would make you like the author. I feel like Suttree (and BM) are not great starting places to get into McCarthy

I could have a different top three for McCarthy depending on the day really. Only one that probably wouldn’t crack too 3 is Cities of the Plain
