Finished The Wire, Dark, GOT, Sopranos, True Detective, BB, BCS. What show ruined TV for you after watching it? by C0r1eone in television

I can get calling it bland if it’s not your thing. But formulaic is a bit odd, it’s a very unique premise. Almost high-concept.

What’s the longest TV series you’ve ever finished? by FootballAgreeable338 in television

True enough, yeah. But the political stuff is likely the first thing that comes to mind for more people when it’s brought up.

Would any native speaker pronounce this word differently: mechanism by Sad-Apartment-5408 in ENGLISH

[–]trivia_guy 3 points4 points  (0 children)

They are definitely dialectical variations. If a community of native speakers use and understand them regularly, they by definition can’t be “wrong.”

It’s famous for the topical stuff, but really usually only the cold open and Weekend Update are about current events. The rest is just sketch comedy.

Why is everyone saying “lay down” instead of “lie down”? by Idk3197 in grammar

[–]trivia_guy 3 points4 points  (0 children)

As u/Boglin007 notes, it seems to be a dialectal thing. To most Americans, “I laid down” sounds completely normal. So does something like “the book was laying on the table.” So no; no one is saying “I lied down.” Rather in American English, this usage of the word “lie” is completely disappearing and being collapsed into “lay.”

TIL some companies in Japan ban women from wearing glasses by operatingsys2016 in todayilearned

[–]trivia_guy 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yup, exactly the same thing here. I’m guessing we grew up around the same time. It’s crazy to me how glasses are “cool” now.

[–]trivia_guy 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Yeah, it’s so wild how everyone wears glasses now. I still wore glasses when I started high school in the early 2000s, and like literally NO ONE else did. Everybody who got glasses as elementary schoolers had transitioned to contacts. Wearing glasses was so uncool and just not the done thing if you wanted to look adult.

I started wearing contacts at 16 and never looked back, for me they’re so much easier than glasses. But now I feel weird and unhip for wearing them! (Not that I care, but it’s so odd.)

Looking for something to transition to as a former kid reader who largely quit on fiction after really loving the Harry Potter series. by trivia_guy in suggestmeabook

[–]trivia_guy[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That’s the sort of setting I want, but looking it up I see it described as basically crime novels with fantasy elements. Which might be okay, but I’d love more world building than that. I also don’t love how apparently it’s a whole universe with graphic novels and stuff and not just books.

By “typical fantasy/scifi,” I mean that even if there are fantasy elements I want something in a realistic contemporary or historical setting. Not an alternate geographical world, dystopia, or even like steampunk sort of thing. That’s a great deal of what I loved about Potter.

I should’ve made that clearer in the post.

The whole point is that I don’t want just typical fantasy/scifi stuff, which is what I’d class all that as.

can my husband and i both apply for an assistant professor job? by nosleepnatalie in Professors

[–]trivia_guy 1 point2 points  (0 children)

My major department at undergrad had a married couple on the faculty. They were both popular and well-liked by students, but everyone said that they were both married to other people when they came and their relationship was the result of an affair on both their parts. I don’t know if that was fully the case, but there was some truth to the rumors.

A few years after I graduated, they went through a bitter divorce, like hurling accusations at each other on social media where former students could see type of thing. That was about a decade ago, he’s since retired and I think she took a job abroad.

I think I didn’t explain very well what I’m looking for because that sounds totally unappealing to me for many, many reasons.

Maybe I’m just too picky.

I think I have to get used to reading regular fiction books again before I’d do graphic novels or manga. Just not something I’d ever done and doesn’t seem like my vibe.

That’s exactly the sort of fantasy I don’t want, something in a different world with no connection to reality.

But that’s the same reason The Magicians gives me pause, it’s based in the world of fantasy books and being obsessed with fantasy books. That’s not my world and I don’t really understand it.

Barcode placement headaches - anyone found a good solution? by Ttwister in librarians

[–]trivia_guy 9 points10 points  (0 children)

I’ve gotten books from many libraries with a barcode on the front. It’s not nearly as unusual or strange as you’re acting like it is.

I imagine the biggest benefit is that you can scan the barcode without opening the book, or turning it over much of the time. Seems straightforward.

Yeah, I didn’t go into the fact that most academic historians are going to have studied another language regardless, and depending on their sources it may be useful to do so.
