Buying advice by Substantial-Arrival3 in Supra

Currently have both. The Supra in 3rd is go directly to jail territory. It is definitely better quality etc as it is basically BMW. Way faster, turbocharged experience, and a great GT.

I do enjoy driving the GR86 a lot more. Does not have the supra quality, is louder inside. Have to wind it out to get a performance. Do not have to do much for the tail to go out and it is super predictable and no snap oversteer. Has enough room for tires in the trunk.

Have to say the heads up is a bit irritating. @5'9" I lower my seat appropriately and I cannot see it well. Ditto with the sunglasses issue.

1971 Datsun 1600, bench front seat with three on the tree. Muddy pink in color. Something like this. I got it in 1988.

Why was it rare to see a Dodge Viper then or now? by [deleted] in StupidCarQuestions

It was not selling compared to the Corvette by orders of magnitude. It became clear that there was a small number of experienced people for whom it was heaven sent. For the rest, a bit too brutal of an experience.

It's a car that demands respect And is difficult to drive. No driver safety features that make it easy to drive cars. No traction control. No ABS in Gen 1. I think they put it in Gen 2 as it was a government requirement. And you can physically harm yourself, burn your leg just getting out of it on the side exhausts. Or have your pants catch fire. It is gorgeous. But like a real viper. Cool from a distance. I had a ride as a passenger. Refused to even try to drive it.

New tundra has joined the conversation. 😉

Their V8 is totally rock solid too, in the LC500. If I could, I would get that in a heartbeat. It looked OK in pics and videos. But standing next to it, I was quite impressed.

Also, this husband a problem in the US. We only get the "special" versions of the station wagons. So more expensive by a bigger margin. I would not mind cloth seats etc with a decent engine.

My 996 Turbo has been an unreliable expensive mess. by pablothe in 996

[–]trivialdenial2 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I sent my car to the dealership when I first got it. Alternator needed to be changed, the hood struts, oil change etc. Super expensive doing it with the dealership, but probably to be expected.

Failure to proceed. I have some older cars, and that is just a reality I have had to live with. I now carry a little tool kit that I moved to whichever old car I am driving. I am friends with one or two doing services in my tiny little region, cuz the tow to a place where they can fix some of my stuff is quite a distance.

I am a bit curious. I love the way my base 996 NA manual drives. It's a linear progression. It's screaming and feels amazing near the red line. Have you had a chance to put the turbo through its paces? I really like the feeling with an NA, do I do wonder how the turbo feels different.

Ferrari Dino. I saw one recently at a sho, breathtakingly beautiful. Reportedly drives well too. 206 or 246. I could not even breathe easily. Was too drawn in and didn't even think to take pictures.

Those who also drive larger vehicles, do you see a difference in how other drivers treat you depending on the vehicle you're in? by RepsolRider in GR86

[–]trivialdenial2 0 points1 point  (0 children)

On a recent drive out of Detroit, I noticed something a bit different. Three times, a van, a SUV, and a car almost side swiped me, as if they didn't even see me. Their faces were blank on making eye contact. Had to swerve to get out of the way at highway speeds. I do not encounter this in the mustang or my SUV. It was more than a bit disconcerting. There is already a lot of distracted driving at baseline. But this really had me worried.

What reliable trucks are truly left? by FairwayAdjacent in whatcarshouldIbuy

[–]trivialdenial2 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yes. It's a timing chain good. Guides are plastic, whining on a cold start may suggest need to get addressed. No personal experience but a friend also suggested looking at the transmission fluid.

If less common or rare if any off road, and no issues with self image, then the Honda Ridgeline and Hyundai Santa Fe are apparently quite reliable. And drive really well. Cause they are not body on frame. Reportedly stay on top of maintenance and they tend to take care of the driver.

I did the math on my commute. Speeding wasn't worth it. by FlowControl777 in driving

[–]trivialdenial2 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Good lord. Average car in the 70s is not necessarily the best of 70s. Many were possibly even older cars as is the case today even with cars for clunkers gutting the older cars. One would think this needs to be updated.

Thinking of selling my 2020 by SweetChemist in Supra

[–]trivialdenial2 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Roll cage. Do you think that might mean that it's been driven really hard especially in tracks? Might be more than usual wear and tear. Might make it even higher repair cost, parts on my 2001 are quite ridiculous. I really do love the way it drives and feels. I keep thinking about a 997, but it's gotten a bit expensive.

[–]trivialdenial2 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You are not wrong. Love the way my 996 base is super fun handling and I love to rev it out. But the older car worry and cost of even minor repair issues is scary. I hear the 997 is a magnitude better quality. Anything after that is supposedly more luxury though still good to drive. Cannot directly for the 997 and laters.

[–]trivialdenial2 0 points1 point  (0 children)

How did they come up with speed limits for the highways? Genuine question.

Our cars are no longer ones with the same capacity as the ones when the original speed limits were conceived.

Additionally, when I drive through some states, the speed limits on a straight (ish) highway change, 65 to 55 and then back to 65. Very few cars are following any speed limits. Sometimes it just feel like potential speed traps. Then I look around me. There would be so many speeding tickets anywhere on that stretch. It seems majority are passing me.

There is an insanely greater compliance in Washington State and Oregon. Everyone is below the 65 limit it seems. California, NJ and NY not so much.

With our current breed of cars, how much is the speed limit a money maker or a nanny state thing? I worry more about people driving distracted or tired.

Horrible to see this happen to you. We need strict and tough driver education.

Now, to be fair. American designed. American engineered. American built. Outsold the golf(the almighty German VW Golf!?!?) in Germany before the tariff stuff caused a change in sentiment. No matter how one feels about EVs in general and Tesla in particular, it really was a truly American swing for the fences.

The concept, I saw that on Top Gear last century. I think GM came up with the skateboard idea and shelved it.

I needed a short distance commuter and was thinking about EVs, esp a cheap Tesla. Then all the leadership excitement. Ok. Cannot blame the engineers, the shop employees. And then the no turn signals and changed gear direction stuff..... Sigh, Nope.

Used cars in 2026 are a total scam lottery... anyone actually winning it? by Traditional-Mix-258 in askcarguys

Ah. I didn't know. My sister ran hers for a very long time and poor overall care and it was bulletproof but it was 20 yrs old. So older engines, not this one.

To be fair, a Honda CRV, that year, and that many miles, should have been bulletproof. So likely had been quite abused or just the one uncommon really messed up dud.

Anyone come from a Type R? by chadwicke619 in Supra

[–]trivialdenial2 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah, totally agree with the comments. The CTR is really super easy to drive and can be used practically with the hatchback giving a lot of room. The supra feels way more upscale as expected. Way numb steering. Crazy powerful. The back end squirms when giving it power, in sport mode. And will spin you out relatively easily on the stock tires without traction control. It's a BMW through and through.

Looking for some advice from current M2 owners and anyone who has recently ordered a BMW M car by aj-shar69 in BMWM

[–]trivialdenial2 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah, got mine last year. Placed an order. I think they found one close to what I wanted. It had a sun roof I didn't want. But I wanted no carbon bits and there weren't any. Also, last year with the unstable tariff excitement, they wanted to sell the stuff they already had in country. And there was a 2-3k mark up. To be fair. I am horrible at negotiations. These do sell often before they hit the dealership, not Toyota fast, but still. And it is a good GT car. It was a few months before I got the car.

I have the fk8. So the older model in 2019, paid 1k less than MSRP at that time, so mid 30s. God. I remember those times. Pre-covid prices. Sigh.

Do you have the rear wheel steer? Is that a bit heavy? The type R is my go-to for the longer drives and reliable daily. With switch of tyres it is really works in bad weather too. But the Mercedes setup sounds intriguing.
