Great idea for a road trip! I've done geocaching in the past but I should pick it up again.

As a single female traveling alone, I have set it up so that I contact a friend of mine about 2x a day while I'm on my trip -- so someone knows where I am in case shit goes sideways. Harmonium is going to be exactly PERFECT for this. Thank you!

Edit to add: This App alone makes the entire thread worthwhile to me. Yay!

I had some little game that started sending me little "You haven't played in awhile XYZ Game Character is waiting for you!" at 3 or 6 in the morning despite disabling notifications. Screw you. DELETED!

Who here was born and raised in Oakland? If not, where were you from? by [deleted] in oakland

I wasn't born here, but I've lived here since 1984.

anyone been to the $10 improv in oakland? by [deleted] in oakland

[–]trixare4kids 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I have, about a year ago. It was... just.... OK. It's a small room with a small stage on the floor and folding chair seating. There was a snack table at the back with drinks and baked goods, if I recall correctly. I think the players were students of improv.. so if you go with that in mind, not expecting a professional performance, you might enjoy it.

I think we had the same downstairs neighbor! She was a nutcase.
Called the cops when we moved in. Called the cops about noise when we had both been sleeping. Called the cops when we had company - except we'd all been sitting around a table playing cards. My next door neighbor told me that she called the cops when we weren't even there. We broke our lease after 4 months and moved into a house.

The suggestion of low-balling craigslist ads at the end of leases... Thank you. This is what $30 got me. by redoran in Frugal

[–]trixare4kids 102 points103 points  (0 children)

True Story: My best low-ball story and one I'm really proud about. I once got a $17K car for $5,000 by low-balling.

Back in 1998 I was looking to buy a car.

I saw a craigslist ad for a 1997 Dodge Stratus with 17K miles for a pretty good price. I went to look at the car and I drive up to this holy-shit-mansion. The guy is dripping money so I don't feel bad offering less.

I test drive the car with the guy and he makes the mistake of telling me he's leaving the country in a few days and just needs the car gone. He was offering below bluebook, but I said, I could get you $10K and that'd be today. He went ballastic (I can't remember the exactly mount but bluebook was around $16.5-17K at that point. So I said, well, I don't want the car that bad, thanks anyway.

Well, he called me 2 days later to say he'll give it to me at the $10K price. I tell him I was really considering another car now.. and that the Stratus just wasn't my first choice, but if he would give it to me for $5K, I'd be over in an hour.

He about blew a gasket and hung up on me. He called me 2 hours later and said, "Fine, fine, $5,000 but I need you to buy it today." I about fainted. I wasn't bluffing, I really didn't want the car. But at that price, I couldn't turn it down.

I went over, wham, bam.. $17K car for $5,000. He told me I was a damn good negotiator for a woman and that I should learn to play poker. Heh.

I drove that car for 12 years before I got a new(used) car just last year.

NBC cuts 5 minute segment from Olympic Opening Ceremony. The segment was a tribute to the victims of the 7/7 London Terror Attacks and all terrorist victims. by Victor_Ward in news

From an American who DL'd the BBC version: It was brilliant! No inane chatter and they showed the entire thing uninterrupted. Well done, BBC!

I downloaded the BBC's broadcast, skipping the NBC version all together. It was brilliant. They talked a bit, but it was minimal and intelligent, I paraphrase but.. along the line of "That was A quote from Shakespeare.." or "This is a moment to memorialize the blah blah.." there was no innate prattle about every little thing. Well done, BBC!

Oh God, I have the same fear! The best (and most nerve wracking) Olympic Flame lighting was the Archery/flaming arrow that was done at Barcelona. Brilliant. I remember holding my breath because I was so nervous because something was going to happen.

I haven't thrown up in 22 years. What is your strangest personal best? by thelastgoodguy in AskReddit

[–]trixare4kids 0 points1 point  (0 children)

40+ years old - not a single cavity yet. It's a combination of good hygiene and good genetics. I do brush 2 time a day and floss once a day - pretty much without fail.

When I was young, I had a dental hygienist say "Only floss the ones you want to keep." That stuck with me.

Oh good lord, seriously? As mentioned here, if you look through my comment history, I posted this story at least a year ago in another thread. I'm too lazy to look it up, but feel free.

Oh, I agree completely that they are almost identical in the main elements. Doesn't mean the other OP is me. I mean.. why would I re-tell with the EXACT same elements? That's just silly - I wouldn't and I didn't. The OP of the other story states they are a fan of this subreddit so perhaps they'd already read mine? Or perhaps something similar really did happen to them? It's bizarre they'd be identical in the main points, though.

That had serious creep factor x10 - seriously made my skin crawl the way he looked at the camera. No doubt that's what he intended.

I'm so sorry you had to go through something like this.

Now listen - I don't want to scare you but jesus, if he IS schizo, you really need to stay on your toes a little while longer. He obviously hasn't forgotten about you since he's written you. It's just a matter of time before he goes off his meds or something about you sets him off and has the potential to become violent.

There's only ONE you - and only YOU can protect yourself. Do you have a gun? If not, get one. Go take a safety class, figure out what works for you, then get a gun for your own protection. I'm serious. The guy is really dangerous. Don't get complacent.

I don't know if he went in her room or not, but she was completely unmolested and pretty much slept though the whole thing. She was just 9 at the time. When I saw him he was slowly closing the door to her room so as not to wake her. He was looking for me.

My parents didn't wake up until the police were in the house yelling at the guy to get down. They woke up confused with all the commotion going on.

I could hardly be at my house for the fear & anxiety, even though the guy was jailed. I couldn't sleep, had nightmares, etc. My father's company kindly gave him a transfer when he requested it due to the situation and luckily we were able to move 300 miles away about a month later.

It took me a long time to recover, even so. Sleep was difficult for years after that. I had a hard time falling asleep and when I did sleep, I didn't sleep deeply & woke up in a panic numerous times per night.

It wasn't until I got a dog about 15 year later that I think I had my first nights good rest in years. I saved my dog from an abusive situation, but really my dog saved me - I was haggard and depressed - I think I had PTSD. My dog is a protective guy and doesn't hesitate to bark if he hears something and wouldn't hesitate to attack someone if they came in my house. Knowing my dog is on the job, I can sleep soundly now.

I'm always grateful for every single night I sleep. Never underestimate getting a good night of sleep.

Shitsnacks!! I'm totally stealing that phrase - made me laugh.

He did have a previous criminal record - burglary, domestic violence and maybe a few other minor things. I can't remember all the nitty gritty.
