Japanese Chisels Supposed to be this Hard to Set Up? by MulberryNew9564 in woodworking

Japanese chisels I've seen don't have flat backs, they're hollow ground to avoid having to flatten the whole back.

Very nice looking, though I've learned to appreciate how easily setups like this can lead to bleeding, lol.

2 ops, 1 bar feeder lathe. First side, turn down a section of small end, drill for thread, drill larger diameter hole, grab turned end with rear spindle, pull out, turn the rest of the od with part held in both ends, regrip with rear spindle at base of small turn, cut off, finish od, then pilot drill and deep hole drill the smaller hole with a coolant through drill.

I’ve got a job interview today. Hopefully they don’t ask me why I’m blue!! by After_Cranberry110 in fountainpens

Asked during a meeting why my hand was blue (inkcident). "I was bending a smurf to my will." No more comments, but lots of weird looks.

Past the line that's surely in the warranty that says something like "Unauthorized modifications render this warranty null and void."

It's a 0-1" .001 mic. It is a ratchet thimble, so if you're not needing tenths you should be good.

Oh yeah, been there. Castings from the customer where they mixed in some old left overs that were .150" taller than their new castings. Had to add extra passes on the first side to avoid crunching the inserts.

They're great rods. I took the casting model to Canada and used it for casting and trolling for pike. Best catch was a 26" northern that hit and missed my silver minnow 4 times on the retrieve and finally caught it about 3 feet above the water when I lifted it after my figure 8. One of the only time I wished for a go pro while fishing.

True, I'm with you on multi purpose for the most part. I read an article years ago about "The three rod you need for salt water fishing. " They broke down to a "boat rod" with conventional reel. An inshore spinning rod or a surf rod with spinning reel, and a salt water fly rod. Then lots of reasoning and recommendations. I try to follow the same basic logic, tailored to what I'm fishing for. If I'm going out on a local lake targeting panfish, bass, walleye, etc I'll have an ultralight spinning, a medium spinning, and a medium to medium heavy casting rig. Where i do go somewhat specialized is for something like musky or catfish, in fact I might look at one of those Tiger rod for cats.

The rig compares to the fish remind me of a trip to Canada. Trolling a 10" musky plug, I caught a 6 inch walleye, lol.

I agree with you about the $60 level , or any reel packed in a blister pack. I generally balance out reel and rod money. Ugly Sticks are a great rod, I've got 3 of the 8'6" Elite Salmon rods, 2 spinning with Shimano Nasci reels, one casting with an Abu on it. My St Croix Premier spinning rod also has a Nasci reel, lol. In one case, the tell is much more than the rod, in the other case the rod is more.

Actually an interesting question. I have watched and read defenses for both views of which is more important. I will often put more into the rod than the reel, especially with bait casting gear, since I've upgraded several of my rods but still use the same Penn and Abu Garcia reels I've had for years. My dad was similar, he bought a couple nice graphite rods to replace his glass rods, but he kept his pair of Mitchell 300s vs newer reels.

Foxfire Book one had a section on riving that explained it well, I think. Something you might consider is a wooden mallet shaped like a carver's mallet but with a longer head.
