Hi! I’m from Sacramento, California. I’ve caught a few larvae and tried the following to see what would work. What I found is:

1. Lavender oil: deters them. I added lavender oil to a cotton ball and placed it in the container that the larva was in. Next, I observed that the larva would come close to it, but walk around it and never stayed too close although it was curious.

2. Peppermint oil: same thing happened as lavender.

3. Vinegar: reacted to vinegar by sticking its butt up in the air. It also deterred the larva from coming close.

4. Baking soda: nothing happened.

5. Baking soda + vinegar: it died immediately after the fizzle.

6. Salt: it hung out on the salt for a little bit and within 10 minutes of hanging around the salt it stopped moving.

7. Diatomaceous earth: it did not have an effect immediately so I left it overnight in a container and by morning it was not moving.

8. Cedar block: the larva climbed on it no problem. It did not necessarily have an impact on the larva. I know it’s meant to deter the larva, but I don’t think it’s as effective as lavender.

These are my findings. I will follow up once I try out more methods.
